Starving and nearly frozen he finds refuge with a wily old trapper (Will Geer) whose survival teaching includes going eyeball to eyeball with a grizzly. The Cowboys: After his cowhands desert him for a nearby gold rush ageing leather-tough rancher Will Anderson (John Wayne) resorts to hiring 11 schoolboys to help him on a 400-mile cattle run. Setting off with the boys and an eloquent but equally tough black cook (Roscoe Lee Browne) Anderson must get his cattle to their destination while contending with the wilderness and a psychotic vengeful ex-con (Bruce Dern) who is out to get him. With an amazingly natural performance by Wayne this stylized action-packed Western is exquisitely filmed emotionally sensitive and highly entertaining. Wild Wild West: If you think special government agent James West is fast with a six shooter wait until he lays a quip on you! Megahit star Will Smith plays West re-uniting with Men In Black director Barry Sonnenfield in an effects-loaded shoot-from-the-lip spectacular. Kevin Kline plays fellow agent and crackerjack inventor Artemus Gordon teamed with West on a daring assignment; stop legless Dr Arliss Loveless (Kenneth Branagh) and his diabolical plot for a Disunited states of America.   It's clear right from the opening episodes of its third series that Farscape has finally developed into a grown-up show. There's a new self-confidence and a new maturity here that's entirely welcome after the often wildly erratic tone of the second series. The production design and high-quality effects work remain true to the show's original quirky style, although both the look and the more adult-themed scripts have become progressively darker. Season 3 is the year when the Wormhole story arc takes precedence, as the interactions between John Crichton and his nemesis Scorpius become ever more complicated (involving various different clones, real or "neural", of both antagonists). It's also the year that some major characters die, new ones are introduced and Crichton (well, one version of him anyway) and Aeryn finally consummate their relationship. Moya's crew endure a vertiginous emotional roller-coaster ride when powerful issues of love, loyalty and sacrifice loom large. They must also face their sternest challenge yet as the series' biggest story arc reaches an explosive climax aboard Scorpius' Command Carrier. Anyone who has not followed Farscape extremely closely from the very beginning of Series 1 will be utterly baffled by the convoluted plotting and complex character interactions. But for fans, this is the show's most rewarding year. --Mark Walker

In Rock, a psychotically disgruntled war hero (Ed Harris) seizes the island prison of Alcatraz and threatens to wage chemical warfare against nearby San Francisco unless the government publicly recognises the men who were killed under Harris's top-secret command. Nicolas Cage plays the biochemist who teams up with the only man ever to have escaped from Alcatraz (Sean Connery) in an attempt to foil Harris's terrorist scheme. As one might expect, what follows is an action-packed barrage of bullets, bodies, and climactic confrontations, replete with enough plot contrivances to give even the most jaded action fan cause for alarm. It's a load of hooey, but the cast is obviously having a grand old time, and there's enough wit to make the recycled action sequences tolerable. --Jeff Shannon

  Dead Sexy is yet another entry in the spurious "erotic thriller" genre. Although it attempts to pass itself off as a crime drama, the credibility of the whole affair is stretched somewhat by casting ex-Playboy Playmate Shannon Tweed in the lead role of Detective Kate McBain, the police officer leading investigations into a suspected serial killer. This time, though, Tweed (who also produced the film) does a sterling job of both keeping her clothes on (most of the time) and acting her way through the movie. Every cliché in the book is utilised, but the movie might have stood up to repeated viewing if it took itself a little less seriously. As it is, the frequent sex scenes are crow-barred in to signal some sort of plot development as the whole thing moves towards its rather lame conclusion, unable to decide whether it wants to offer explicit adult entertainment or serious drama. Ultimately this is one for fans of Tweed, not those who relish a good whodunit. On the DVD: Dead Sexy is surprisingly high-budget and offers good picture and sound quality. Extras are limited to a filmography of Tweed and her wooden co-star John Enos, plus a theatrical trailer that does a fair job of summing up the movie's mix of sex and action. --Phil Udell
