  • Peter Greenaway's A TV Dante: The Inferno Cantos I-VIII [DVD]Peter Greenaway's A TV Dante: The Inferno Cantos I-VIII | DVD | (18/04/2011) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £15.99

Greenaway collaborated with English painter/polymath Tom Phillips to create this visually impressive attempt to bring Dante's Inferno to the television screen. Bob Peck plays Dante, as narrator; his guide, the Roman poet Virgil, by Sir John Gielgud, and Dante's muse, Beatrice, is portrayed by Joanne Whalley. The Divine Comedy was originally written at the beginning of the fourteenth century, when its author was 35, or 'halfway through the journey of this life'. The political and national turmoil of Italy at the time forced Dante Alighieri, ambassador, diplomat and governor, to re-assess his life and embark on a spiritual journey. The three stages of this journey are the three books of the Comedy (the prefix Divine was added later): Inferno, Purgatorio and Paradiso. There is little doubt that the Inferno is the most widely known of these three; Dante's vision of a multi-layered hell, with its graphic depiction of the various grotesque punishments meted out to its inhabitants, is horrific yet compelling on both the page and the screen. Although the allegorical value of Dante's original vision may be less immediately relevant to this late twentieth century society there is a universality to the sins and the sinners that we encounter on his journey. The eight Cantos of the film are not conventionally dramatised, rather they are illuminated with layered and juxtaposed imagery and a soundtrack which comments, counterpoints and clarifies. There are visual footnotes delivered by relevant expert authorities, and these often perform the function of narration as well as illustration. The result is a dazzling video journey through Dante's underworld.

Although direct-to-video Disney sequels usually try to hide or simply ignore the issue, George of the Jungle 2 gleefully points out the lack of continuity between it and the original movie. Here, the good-natured narrator is happy to explain why Brendan Fraser has been replaced and why the special effects look cheaper: it's all a part of an effort to expand beyond the one-joke idea of a block-headed Tarzan who keeps swinging into trees. It's a pleasant surprise that all these self-referential nods and asides to the camera do indeed make hilarious viewing. Replacement Chris Showerman willingly takes on all manner of humiliation at the hands of CG jungle animals and his new extended family. George junior is the main by-product of the five-year gap, and thankfully has inherited brains from his mother's side (Julie Benz). In a dastardly plot to win back his love, Lyle (Thomas Haden Church, one of the few to reprise his role from the original) has the gang trooping back and forth to Las Vegas. With sight gags aplenty, bumbling George has more than just trees to avoid. --Paul Tonks

  • Mickey's House Of Villains [2002]Mickey's House Of Villains | DVD | (06/10/2002) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £15.99

Mickey's House of Mouse Villains seeks to do for Halloween what Mickey's Magical Christmas: Snowed In at the House of Mouse (2001) did for Yuletide. It's an anthology set on Halloween in the titular house, a nightclub where characters--including Donald Duck, Goofy, Jafar, Cruella de Vil, and Captain Hook--gather to watch Disney cartoons. There's a perfunctory framing plot with the villains taking over the House, but the 65 minutes is almost entirely filled by eight short cartoons. Five are very recent, with clinically clean computer animation, and three are vintage gems glowing with the warm detailed look of Golden Age Disney. These are Trick or Treat (1952), Donald Duck and the Gorilla (1944), and Lonesome Ghosts (1937), in which Mickey, Donald and Goofy star in what was surely the inspiration for Ghostbusters. The best of the new adventures is Mickey's Mechanical House, in which the mouse moves into a futuristic house which goes disastrously wrong. It's made all the more entertaining by a poetic rhyming narration delivered by John Cleese. Young children will love it all, while older fans may prefer a compilation of vintage Disney shorts. On the DVD: Mickey's House of Mouse Villains DVD contains a well-designed animated quiz game, "Wheel of Misfortune", that should entertain young fans for a while. Otherwise, the extras consist of three trailers and a "Fright Reel": a three-minute compilation of Disney clips with two Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtracks. The choice amounts to the same sound effects with or without music. The sound is good, except for the three vintage animations, which are in mono. The picture is 4:3 and is generally very sharp, though varies a little with the source material. --Gary S Dalkin
