Edward Scissorhands - 25th Anniversary Edition | DVD | (30/11/2015)
from £4.88
| Saving you £5.11 (104.71%)
| RRP Edward Scissorhands achieves the nearly impossible feat of capturing the delicate flavour of a fable or fairy tale in a live-action movie. The story follows a young man named Edward (Johnny Depp), who was created by an inventor (Vincent Price, in one of his last roles) who died before he could give the poor creature a pair of human hands. Edward lives alone in a ruined Gothic castle that just happens to be perched above a pastel-coloured suburb inhabited by breadwinning husbands and frustrated housewives straight out of the 1950s. One day, Peg (Dianne Wiest), the local Avon lady, comes calling. Finding Edward alone, she kindly invites him to come home with her, where she hopes to help him with his pasty complexion and those nasty nicks he's given himself with his razor-sharp fingers. Soon Edward's skill with topiary sculpture and hair design make him popular in the neighbourhood--but the mood turns just as swiftly against the outsider when he starts to feel his own desires, particularly for Peg's daughter Kim (Winona Ryder). Most of director Tim Burton's movies (such as Pee Wee's Big Adventure, Beetlejuice and Batman) are visual spectacles with elements of fantasy but Edward Scissorhands is more tender and personal than the others. Edward's wild black hair is much like Burton's, suggesting that the character represents the director's own feelings of estrangement and co-option. Johnny Depp, making his first successful leap from TV to film, captures Edward's child-like vulnerability even while his physical posture evokes horror icons like the vampire in Nosferatu and the sleepwalker in The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. Classic horror films, at their heart, feel a deep sympathy for the monsters they portray; simply and affectingly, Edward Scissorhands lays that heart bare. --Bret Fetzer

The Astronaut's Wife | DVD | (24/04/2000)
from £6.58

| RRP An intriguingly creepy premise but failed execution marks The Astronaut's Wife, a stylish and ultimately bland thriller about a pretty, young woman whose pretty, young astronaut husband comes back from his most recent space mission a little... odd. Before that fated space trip, Spencer (Johnny Depp) and Jillian (Charlize Theron) were a sunny, happy couple with matching blonde hairdos and a predilection for romping in the sack from extremely clever camera angles. However, after a communications blackout brings Spencer and his partner back down to earth prematurely, things are a little... peculiar. Spencer's partner goes bonkers and has a heart attack; on top of that, the partner's wife takes a fatal shower with a plugged-in radio. Getting out of the space biz, Spencer accepts a job as a corporate exec in New York, and as a welcome to the Big Apple for his comely wife, he molests her at the company cocktail party. Soon enough, Jillian is pregnant, but as you might expect, this pregnancy (twins, don't you know) is a little... unusual. Writer-director Rand Ravich takes his sweet time getting from extremely obvious plot point A to even more obvious plot point B, stretching out the development particulars in mind-numbing, suspense-killing fashion. Even Joe Morton, as a sinisterly psychotic NASA official, can't liven things up--you know you're in bad thriller territory when the biggest scare comes from a light suddenly being switched off. Theron, sporting a Mia Farrow in Rosemary's Baby style haircut, sleepwalks beautifully through the movie, but she did this role much, much better in The Devil's Advocate. Depp, with a cornpone Southern accent, is about as realistic as his peroxided hair. Ravich does the viewer no favours with a hackneyed ending straight out of a B-grade paperback horror novel in which the most shocking moment is Theron's sudden emergence as a brunette. With Blair Brown as a jaded socialite who offers to help out Theron by providing do-it-yourself abortion pills, and a lovely Donna Murphy as the suicidal wife who figures it all out before everyone else. -- Mark Englehart, Amazon.com
Johnny Vegas - Who's Ready For Ice Cream? | DVD | (17/11/2003)
from £5.56
| Saving you £14.43 (259.53%)
| RRP Rather than a conventional record of a stand-up comic at work, Johnny Vegas's Who's Ready for Ice Cream? is a pseudo-documentary meditation on what makes good comedy, and how success is a threat to comic spontaneity. Trapped by his own celebrity, Vegas is kidnapped by a brutal de- programmer and shipped off to the Edinburgh fringe to rediscover his roots in humiliation and despair. True comedy, we learn, comes from pain. He is forced to share a room with a truly unfunny comic who wakes him up to tell him gags and forces him to eat baby food; he is sponsored by an ice-cream man, who wants ice cream to figure in the routines; and to cap it all he is randomly beaten by the de-programmer. Not all of this is remotely as funny as Vegas and his co-stars thought it was, though there are wonderful moments of excruciating embarrassment. However, the routines framed by it include moments of real genius--Vegas at his foul-mouthed, self-hating best. Talking about, say, how he was conned into working with the famous monkey puppet in the belief it was going to be released into the wild is inventive fantasy of the highest order. --Roz Kaveney

| RRP Blues artist Johnny Winter is a familiar name to anybody that appreciates slash-and-burn guitar and Winter aficionados seem to be equally split between the musician's 1970s-era blues-n-roots-rock material on Blue Sky Records and his later house-rockin' recordings for the Alligator and Point Blank labels during the 1980s and '90s. Fans of the former will rejoice when our friends at Music Video Distributors release Winter's Live Through The '70s DVD. Live Through The '70s collects official archival video of a number of classic Winter performances from disparate sources such as a 1970 appearance on Danish TV and a Royal Albert Hall performance in London that same year. The 111-minute DVD also includes a 1973 broadcast of Winter from Don Kirshner's Rock Concert; a 1974 Winter performance from the Blues Summit in Chicago; a 1974 performance at Musikladen in Bremen Germany; and a 1979 appearance on Rockpalast in Germany. Among the songs captured on tape are Winter faves like Johnny B. Goode Rock & Roll Hootchie Koo and Mean Town Blues. Live Through The '70s deserves a place next to the television for any Johnny Winter fan or even for those that appreciate lively and electric blues-rock guitar.
