| RRP PYAASA is the story of the life and loves of an unsuccessful poet who could achieve neither fame nor prosperity in his lifetime. Vijay is a poet whose poems none of the old traditional publishers accept. They want poems on love not on hunger. Vijay's home life is miserable. Since leaving College he has not settled down to any job. His brothers taunt and insult him and sell the paper on which his poems are written as waste papers to a grocer for a few annas. Vijay in trying to trace the papers finds that a woman has taken them away from the grocer. He then comes across the streetwalker who had taken away his manuscript and remembered his songs by heart. He tries to retrieve his manuscript but fails. Meanwhile Vijay goes to the annual function of his college to recite some poems of his. There he meets Meena the girl with whom he had a flaming romance in his College days. Meena is married to Mr. Ghosh a publisher who offers him a job in his establishment. However the job does not last for long as the publisher gets suspicious of Meena's attachment to Vijay and the poet is once again without a job. While still jobless Vijay learns of the death of his mother - the breaking of the last link with his home. He is desperate and depressed. A friend misleads him and gets him drunk and then takes him to the house of a dancing girl. There Vijay witnesses the tragedy of the fallen women and feels for them. In the same locality he again comes across the streetwalker who sensing his frustration gives him her sympathy and encouragement. But Vijay tells her that he has made up his mind to end his life. The streetwalker puts him to sleep but finds him missing the next morning. After a few days the newspaper announces the news of his death. After his death his poems are published and become a great success. Vijay wins posthumous fame.PYAASA is the undying Spirit of man of the hopes and fears the frustrations and ambitions and the craving for love and friendship that is in every human heart.

| RRP Between heroic spells as the Saint and James Bond, Roger Moore was teamed with Tony Curtis in The Persuaders, a derivative but fun series about a couple of millionaire dilettante adventurers who swan around the world competing for the attention of beautiful women and getting involved in perplexing mysteries. Moore is Lord Brett Sinclair, an upper crust Brit of impeccable breeding, while Curtis is Danny Wilde, an up-from-the-streets self-made man whose trademark is a pair of brown gloves. The allegedly tasteful Brett and the crasser Danny both model a succession of garish early 70s fashions while their pursuits of duplicitous crumpet usually wind up with the women getting away and the heroes stuck with each other. Given all that, this may well be the most blatantly homoerotic of all the buddy television pairings (see the eponymous stars of Starsky and Hutch, Regan and Carter in The Sweeney, Bodie and Doyle of The Professionals) that ran ove! r the screen in the 70s, in which the male leads sublimated their feelings for each other by pulling out their guns and shooting at baddies. --Kim Newman

Oliver Stone Ultimate Collection | DVD | (06/12/2004)
from £N/A
| Saving you £N/A (N/A%)
| RRP This 13-disc set is at least the third massive DVD collection with the Oliver Stone moniker. New to this set are two documentaries: Looking for Fidel (2004), Stone's second film shadowing the Cuban leader, focusing on the regime's iron-fisted defector policy. Persona Non Grata (2003) is an examination of Palestinian conflict. Both of the films have a constantly moving camera, giving us a you-are-there feel to the subjects including Stone, who is seen often. His warts and all interviews are certainly a different type than the usual newsmagazines and are especially interesting in Non Grata since we've seen too many cut-and-dried interviews with these players over the years. The main theatrical films on single discs have been released before although several of them have been released previously with more content and bonus discs, creating a debate on how "ultimate" this collection is. Otherwise, all his films are here, from his Vietnam trilogy (Platoon, Born on the Fourth of July, Heaven & Earth), his iconic pop culture films (The Doors, Wall Street, Any Given Sunday), experimental films (Natural Born Killers, U-Turn, Talk Radio), and political operas (JFK, Nixon, Salvador), plus the documentary Oliver Stone's America. --Doug Thomas
Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence | DVD | (17/07/2000)

| RRP A highly unusual war movie with as many detractors as fans, this first English-language feature directed by Nagisa Oshima (In the Realm of the Senses) stars David Bowie as a silent, ethereal POW in a Japanese camp. In the face of the camp's brutal conditions and treatment of prisoners, Bowie's character earns the respect of the camp commandant (played by Japanese pop star Ryuichi Sakamoto, who also wrote the score) through his own enigmatic rebellion. While the two seem locked in an unspoken, spiritual understanding, another prisoner (Tom Conti) engages in a more conventional resistance against a monstrous sergeant (Takeshi). The film has a way of evoking as many questions as certainties, and it is not always easy to understand the internal logic of the characters' actions. But that's generally true of Oshima's movies, in which the power of certain relationships is almost hallucinatory in self-referential intensity. The cast is outstanding, and Bowie is particularly fascinating in his alien way. --Tom Keogh
