  Based on the series of novels written by Dorothy L Sayers in the 1920s and 30s, Lord Peter Wimsey was dramatised for TV by the BBC between 1972-5. Ian Carmichael, veteran of British film comedy, played the genial, aristocratic sleuth; Glyn Houston was his manservant Bunter. The pair are similar to PG Wodehouse's Jeeves and Bertie Wooster (whom Carmichael played in an earlier TV adaptation) though here the duo are equal in intelligence, breezing about the country together in Wimsey's Bentley and stumbling with morbid regularity upon baffling murder mysteries to test their wits. Those for whom this series forms hazy memories of childhood might be surprised at its somewhat stagy, lingering interior shots, the spartan paucity of music, the miserly attitude towards locations, especially foreign ones, and the rather genteel, leisurely pace of these programmes, besides which Inspector Morse seems like Quentin Tarantino in comparison. It seems that initially the BBC was reluctant to commission the series and ventured on production with a wary eye on the budget. The Britain depicted by Sayers is, by and large, populated by either the upper classes or heavily accented, rum-do-and-no-mistake lower orders, which some might find consoling. However, the acting is generally excellent and the murder mysteries are sophisticated parlour games, the televisual equivalent of a good, absorbing jigsaw puzzle. There were five feature-length adaptations in all. "The Nine Tailors" weaves an especially elaborate tale, involving jewel theft, campanology (the art of bell-ringing) and dual identity. --David Stubbs

  Danny and Fox are best friends. They work together selling dodgy pirate software at markets play together and thanks to a caravan in Danny's mother's garden live in each other's pocket. However the one thing they do not share is a sense of responsibility. Fox is weighed down by it. He wants to be the best father in the world but his two kids live with their mother and her new boyfriend. If only he could get some money enough to move out of that ramshackle caravan. Then perhaps he could win back the heart of his ex-girlfriend and become a family man once more. Danny on the other hand is a free spirit. Still living with his mother he avoids responsibility like it was an ugly girl looking for a date. An irrepressible ""daft boy"" a loveable rogue Danny reckons his job is to drag Fox out of the dark hole he is stuck in which normally lands his friend in more trouble than before. Though rarely strictly ""Legit"" Danny and Fox always see themselves as the good guys. They are simply making ends meet the only way they know how in a world of guys who know guys who can get you anything you want. Every day brings a new scam a new dilemma or a new situation that Fox approaches with a sigh of foreboding and Danny with gusto certain of that big pay off.

  Derivative fluff from 1987, The Secret of My Success is made tolerable by its bawdy exuberance and an appealing performance by Michael J Fox, who was still enjoying TV stardom and the career momentum he earned by travelling Back to the Future. Here he plays a Kansas farm boy who dreams of scoring big in New York City... but reality turns out to be brutal to his ambition. When his uncle (Richard Jordan) gives him a mail-room job in the high-rise headquarters of a major corporation, Fox occupies an empty office and poses as a young executive, winning the attention of a lovely young colleague (Helen Slater) and having an affair with his boss's wife (Margaret Whitton). Sporadically amusing as a yuppie comedy and rather off-putting as a wannabe sex farce, the film's still recommendable for its lively cast and a breezy style that almost succeeds in updating the conventions of vintage screwball comedy. Whitton is a standout performer here, so you may wonder why her comedic talent has been underrated, apart from a good role in the first two Major League movies.   Clocking in at just under two hours long, Dangerous: The Short Films contains all the videos from Michael Jackson's album of the same name. Whatever your opinion of the man himself, you cannot deny his abilities as one of the world's finest showmen and his videos are never anything less than spectacular. There was a time when the screening of a new Michael Jackson video was a huge global event, drawing in massive global audiences. This had a downside when "Black Or White" was first screened, as the final segment in which Michael morphs backwards and forwards from a panther form and destroys a car, bar and most of a street caused huge controversy due to its perceived endorsement of vandalism. To the compilers' credit, the entire video is included here but with a full explanation of the ending and a warning not to copy it. For the converted this will be a worthy addition to the collection. For the more cynical, this is a fascinating if somewhat uneasy look at one of pop's most enigmatic and bizarre characters. On the DVD: With a wealth of rare behind-the-scenes footage and a selection of rarely seen live performances, such as a lavish rendition of "Heal The World" from the Super Bowl, the DVD certainly packs on the extras. There is also extensive footage from shoots of the video, as well as those of "Remember The Time" and "In The Closet" complete with fascinating insights from co-stars Eddie Murphy and Naomi Campbell. Other extras include Grammy Awards and NAACP Awards highlights which depending on your opinion of the man in question can be seen as either fitting tributes to the King of Pop or nauseatingly over-sentimental sycophantic claptrap. --Helen Marquis
