Clive Donner's (The Caretaker) modish and glossy swinging Sixties comedy follows the sexual exploits of irrepressible teenager Jamie (Barry Evans) who is full of adolescent energy obsessed by sex and determined to lose his virginity. Based on the book by respected British author and journalist Hunter Davies (The Beatles authorized biography) and with music by The Spencer Davies Group and Traffic Here We Go Round The Mulberry Bush caused a considerable stir when first released due to its taboo-busting portrayal of permissive 60s society and is now rightly regarded as a definitive British coming-of-age film. Unavailable in any format since its initial theatrical run this lost cult classic now receives its home video premier in High-definition.
Novelist James Clavell wrote, produced and directed this 1967 British film (based on the novel by E. R. Braithwaite) about a rookie teacher who throws out stock lesson plans and really takes command of his unruly, adolescent students in a London school. Sidney Poitier is very good as a man struggling with the extent of his commitment to the job, and even more as a teacher whose commitment is to proffering life lessons instead of just academic ones. The spirit of this movie can also be found in more recent films such as Dangerous Minds and Mr. Holland's Opus, but none are as moving as this. Besides, the others don't have a title song performed by Lulu, who also stars. --Tom Keogh
Peggy (Judy Geeson) is recovering from a nervous breakdown when she is attacked by an unseen assailant. As she struggles to break free, her attacker's artificial arm comes loose and Peggy blacks out in sheer terror. Peggy and her new husband Robert (Ralph Bates) spend their honeymoon at the country school where Robert is a teacher. The school is eerily deserted, except for the headmaster Michael (Peter Cushing) and his wife Molly (Joan Collins). Returningto her cottage, Peggy is once more attacked by a man with one arm. Robert goes to London on behalf of the headmaster, but leaves his shotgun behind to reassure Peggy. Michael visits Peggy at the cottage late at night, and she notices for the first time that he has only one arm. Terrified, she reaches for the gun Fear in the Night was the last, and one of the best, of the suspense thrillers that Hammer produced alongside the better-known Gothic horrors. The film was also the Hammer swansong of director and co-writer Jimmy Sangster, who had joined the company in 1949 and helped create its groundbreaking style. The story of Brannigan a tough unconventional Chicago cop who trails an international racketeer to London where he finds his methods contrast sharply with those of the stiff-upper-lipped British...
The Duke is in London, and London will never be the same! Veteran Chicago detective Jim Brannigan (John Wayne, The Searchers) is dispatched to London to bring back notorious gangster Ben Larkin (John Vernon, Dirty Harry), and is assured that the whole operation will run smoothly However, things don't go to plan and Brannigan soon finds himself in the crosshairs of Larkin's thugs. Reluctantly teaming up with by-the-book Commander Swann of Scotland Yard (Richard Attenborough, The Great Escape), Brannigan tears through London leaving behind a trail of destruction whilst determined to re-capture Larkin. Featuring great panoramic views of London shot by cinematographer Gerry Fisher (The Go-Between, Highlander) and with a supporting cast that includes Judy Geeson and Mel Ferrer, Brannigan proved an action-packed vehicle for John Wayne, capitalising on the success of Dirty Harry a few years earlier.
Boasting a strong female cast including Judy Geeson (10 Rillington Place), Stephanie Beacham (Tam-Lin) and Victoria Tennant (Flowers in the Attic) and co-financed by Run Run Shaw of the Shaw Brothers, Inseminoid is among Norman J Warren's most widely seen films and his most infamous. Once listed as a video nasty', this science-fiction horror concerns a small crew of scientists who are terrorised by a creature on a distant planet. Once dubbed the King of Sexploitation' by the tabloid press, Stanley Long was the godfather of the British sex film. Starting out with 8mm striptease reels in the 1950s before moving into nudist documentaries, Long went on to produce and direct a string of extremely popular X-rated movies which told tales of wife swapping, groupies and other saucy goings on. He reached the pinnacle of commercial success with this trio of incredibly successful on the job' sex comedies. Adventures of a Taxi Driver, starring sitcom actor Barry Evans, set the template with the antics of a cabbie who gets more than his fare share'. Securing international distribution as well as becoming the most successful comedy at the British box office in 1976 it prompted two sequels, each featuring more of the same but with a different lead actor (future hit-record producer Christopher Neil). Boasting supporting casts which burst with top-tier British acting talent including Harry H Corbett (Steptoe and Son), Diana Dors (Berserk), Judy Geeson (Inseminoid), Suzy Kendall (To Sir, with Love), future musical theatre sensation Elaine Paige, and former Doctor Who Jon Pertwee the Adventures series represents British popular filmmaking at its most unashamedly cheeky. This 1976 adventure story set in World War II concerns a Nazi plot to kidnap Churchill from his retreat--or murder him if need be. The large, great cast and a director, John Sturges, who's been down this road of ensemble action before (The Magnificent Seven, The Great Escape) make this project exciting if not as memorable as Sturges' more famous works. The weak ending doesn't help. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com
After the waters surrounding the remote island of Balfe become over-polluted by chemical dumps, some of the inhabitants begin to exhibit extreme behavioural and physical changes as they transform into violent and deformed creatures. Is this town afflicted by radioactive waste contaminating their water? Is there a vengeful mutant monster lurking in the woods? Or worse, are the townsfolk being punished by an act of God for their past sins? It is up to Dr. Del Shaw and the dedicated scientists at Doomwatch headquarters to discover the cause of these horrific mutations. Infuriating local villagers who cling to their secluded island's survival, Dr. Shaw (Ian Bannen) and local school teacher Victoria Brown (Judy Geeson) risk their lives to uncover the truth behind the strange happenings, no matter how frightening or dangerous it may be. In a Psycho (1960) inspired thriller from Spanish director Eugenio Martino (Horror Express), Laura Barkley (Judy Geeson) is dragged into a mystery when she arrives at a remote hotel to find her sister missing. Pretty soon more guests, who fall foul of the hoteliers and their draconian religious judgements, find themselves on the missing persons list and the plot moves quickly into a horror of murderous design. Simply Media are delighted to announce the release of the much sought after cult sci-fi classic series Star Maidens on DVD 17th April 2017. Originally shown on ITV and not seen on British television since 1978, this unique Anglo-German production has largely been shrouded in mystery. Today Star Maidens is regarded as a rare and bizarre curio by TV sci-fi enthusiasts, has a place in television history books and provides a fascinating snapshot of the sexual equality revolution at the time. Now all 13 episodes will be available to own on DVD in a two-disc digitally re-mastered set. Starring iconic sci-fi actor Gareth Thomas, three years before he would go on to play space rebel Blake in the BBC sci-fi classic Blake's 7. This DVD release also contains a bonus interview with the late, great actor. Featuring episodes directed by double Oscar-winner Freddie Francis (The Elephant Man), and cinematography by Ken Hodges (David Copperfield (1970)) and Alan Hume (Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi), this stunning series was shot on location in Windsor, Bracknell, Berkshire and Buckinghamshire, locations that would later be used again in Blake's 7. Created by Eric Paice (Dixon of Dock Green) and co-written by John Lucarotti, who had previously been a contributing writer for Doctor Who and The Avengers, and fellow Doctor Who writer Ian Stuart Black, Star Maidens is set on the futuristic planet Medusa in the solar system of Proxima Centauri. It's a perfect world ruled by women known as Star Maidens, and where men are the inferior sex. While the males are relegated to performing menial tasks, women are regarded as the superior intellectual beings and are assigned personal male domestic servants to satisfy all their needs and desires. This peaceful matriarchy, however, is threatened when a comet blows them out of their solar system and into our own, entering the orbit of Earth a primitive, crude and disappointing planet rumoured to be ruled by men! When headstrong rebel Adam, played by French heartthrob Pierre Brice, flees his keeper, the beautiful supreme councillor Fulvia (Judy Geeson Poldark (1975)), along with his faithful friend Shem (Gareth Thomas) they steal a space yacht and head for Earth to claim political sanctuary. Outraged by their disobedience, tough security chief Octavia (Christiane Krüger Anne of Green Gables) decides to take two Earth scientists captive on their own planet, enslaving the male while treating his female assistant like a Queen, as they hunt down their insolent missing men. Much hilarity ensues from the clash in cultures between the two planets, with Adam and Shem having many comedic misunderstandings on landing on our own male dominated Earth for the first time. And the Star Maidens are shocked that women could ever be treated as a man's assistant! Alongside the comedy this series stands out for being one of the first of its time to bluntly address issues of sex discrimination head on. Filled with all the wonderful and wacky tropes you would expect from a 70s cult sci-fi series, including ray guns, over-the-top colourful costumes and impressive retro-futuristic sets from Emmy-winning production designer Keith Wilson (Space: 1999), this is a not-to-be missed series for sci-fi fans, comedy fans and nostalgia hunters.
