Strange lands, peculiar animated beings and altered perceptions created to entertain and confuse. White Rabbits, a Mad Queen, a baby transforming into a pig and conundrums by the score - what on earth does it all mean? Lewis Carroll was the enigmatic man who created a magical and surreal reality populated by characters mined from the depths of his imagination. Mich''le (Amelie's Audrey Tautou) is a 20-year-old tornado. With a bouncing perfectly round Afro and a job posing for fashion photography she boldly describes herself as a top model though her miniature physical size and girlish grin reveals her subdued searching interior. Overloaded with passion and personality she seeks a way to channel her spirituality into an identity. Buddhism works. So does Judaism when she falls for Fran''ois (Edouard Baer) a Jewish veterinarian. Her insistence that Fran''ois prove his religious faith to her by observing Shabbat and obeying other rules causes him a lot of grief. But he adoringly complies. God Is Great And I'm Not follows Mich''le over a three-year period via the impulsive and always poetic exclamations she writes in her diary. The film shows how her aggressive attitude towards her family Fran''ois and all those she holds dear sometimes alienates her. She demands a lot of other people--mainly that they live life with all the zest with which she has chosen to live her own and sometimes those demands backfire on her. An intense and beautiful film fuelled by a powerful performance by Tautou and an inspired script from director Pascale Bailly.

Joanna Ferrone and Susan Rose's Angela Anaconda is one of the most inventive and acute animated shows on children's television. Its gawky heroine Angela has a bad attitude to authority and a vivid fantasy-life that makes up for the humiliations of the everyday--her rivalry with the endlessly pretentious Nanette Manoir and the more-or-less intense dislike of her form teacher Mrs Brinks. We have a profound sense that what we are getting is Angela's side of all this but the transformations and endless sufferings through which she puts the targets of her scorn are entertaining enough to make us entirely complicit. The animation technique, combining poster paint backgrounds with almost hyper-real monochrome faces, provides an almost seamless segue from the mundane to the imagined; these six episodes take us to the Moon, the Amazon and the French Revolution while plausibly reminding us at every turn that these are children, in a classroom. --Roz Kaveney

Down-and-out Polish immigrant Karol Karol is desperate to get out of France. He's obsessed with his French soon-to-be ex-wife (Before Sunrise's Julie Delpy) his French bank account is frozen and he's fed up with the inequality of it all. Penniless he convinces a fellow Pole to smuggle him home in a suitcase--which then gets stolen from the airport. The unhappy thieves beat him and dump him in a snowy rock pit. Things can only get better right? The story evolves into a wickedly funny anti-romance an inverse Romeo and Juliet. Because it's in two foreign languages the dialogue can be occasionally hard to follow but some of the most genuinely funny and touching moments need no verbal explanation. - Grant Balfour
