  • The Return Of Spinal Tap [1992]The Return Of Spinal Tap | DVD | (21/05/2001) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £15.99

The Return of Spinal Tap is based around Tap's performance at the Royal Albert Hall in 1992. In between the footage of Messrs St Hubbins, Tufnell and Smalls performing in front of a huge crowd enthusiastically determined to go along with the joke, there are clips purporting to investigate the band's humble origins in the East London suburb of Squatney, and updates from "rockumentary" director Marty Di Bergi and hapless record plugger Artie Fufkin (from the original film). It is the latter component which is the real strength of Return. Though the concert footage faithfully rehashes many of the film's most treasured jokes (the malfunctioning props, the dancing midgets), the real satirical strength of This is Spinal Tap was never its treatment of heavy metal music (which, after all, is hardly a difficult target). What the first movie did best was illuminate the egomania, paranoia, delusion and stupidity that are the cornerstones of rock 'n' roll as it is lived. The Return of Spinal Tap is a worthy companion piece. --Andrew Mueller

  • Gene Kelly Collection [DVD]Gene Kelly Collection | DVD | (28/09/2009) from £61.99   |  Saving you £-47.00 (N/A%)   |  RRP £14.99

Titles Comprise: Singin' In The Rain: Musician Don Lockwood (Kelly) rises to stardom during Hollywood's silent-movie era - paired with the beautiful jealous and dumb Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen). When Lockwood becomes attracted to young studio singer Kathy Selden (Reynolds) Lamont has her fired. But with the introduction of talking pictures audiences laugh when they hear Lockwood speak for the first time - and the studio uses Selden to dub her voice. An American In Paris: Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron sing and dance to the music of George and Ira Gershwin in this winner of six Academy Awards including Best Picture. When ex-GI Jerry Mulligan (Kelly) remains in Paris to pursue life as an artist he is discovered by a wealthy patroness interested in more than his art. But Mulligan falls in love with a French shop girl (Caron) who is engaged to his best friend. Anchors Aweigh: Frank Sinatra Gene Kelly and Jerry the Mouse star in this charming musical mix of live action and animation. Two sailors (Sinatra and Kelly) in Hollywood looking for glamorous movie starlets find romance dance with a cartoon mouse and help a young starlet get discovered - all during one shore leave. On The Town: Three sailors - Gabey (Gene Kelly) Chip (Frank Sinatra) and Ozzie (Jules Munshin) - are let loose in New York City on 24 hour leave. On a subway Gabey sees a poster of Miss Turnstiles of the Month - a woman named Ivy Smith (Vera-Ellen). Thinking she's a high society girl the trio spend the day looking for her. Along the way they run into a cab driver Hilde (Betty Garrett) who is attracted to Chip and a gorgeous anthropologist named Claire (Ann Miller). The Three Musketeers: To the cry of all for one and one for all comes a version of the Alexandre Dumas classic that's fun for all - a rousing swashbuckling adaptation that was Gene Kelly's favorite among his non-musical movies. Kelly plays country lad D'Artagnan who comes to Paris with heady ambition and duels his way into the ranks of King Louis XIII's musketeers. He swashes-and-buckles with brio bringing to action scenes of the virile athleticism that set him apart as a dancer in movie musicals. A top cast - Vincent Price as unctuous Cardinal Richelieu Lana Turner as villainous Lady de Winter June Allyson as Constance and Angela Lansbury as Queen Anne - joins Kelly in this exuberant tale filmed in luscious Technicolor.

  • A Kind Of Loving [1962]A Kind Of Loving | DVD | (25/06/2001) from £20.00   |  Saving you £-10.01 (N/A%)   |  RRP £9.99

Pity poor Vic (Alan Bates): when he begins a relationship with Ingrid (June Ritchie), a typist at the Lancashire factory where he works as a draughtsman; his life comes apart at the seams. Ingrid's gossiping, malicious friends are bad enough, but her mother Mrs Rothwell (the terrifying Thora Hird) is something else. Vic has to marry Ingrid-she's pregnant--and the only place for them to stay is chez Rothwell. There's a tenderness about A Kind of Loving which you don't find in the more abrasive "kitchen sink" films of the 60s. Vic is not a rebel like Arthur Seton in Saturday Night, Sunday Morning or a macho lunk like Richard Harris' rugby-league player in This Sporting Life. He's a likable, easygoing youngster who soon discovers that real-life love affairs are infinitely messier than he and his mates could ever have imagined. The acute, witty screenplay, adapted by Willis Hall and Keith Waterhouse from Stan Barstow's novel, shows how limited Vic and Ingrid's choices really are. They have no privacy or independence. Bounced into a marriage that neither necessarily wants, their romance quickly sours. Mrs Rothwell is truly the mother-in-law from Hell--a busybody and a tyrant. Look out for the Queen Victoria-like expression on her face when a drunken Vic throws up in her front room. Debut-feature director John Schlesinger captures the humour and the pathos in the young lovers' plight without ever making fun of them. --Geoffrey Macnab

In The Square Peg Norman Wisdom plays one of a pair of council workmen who, while repairing the road outside an army base, come to illustrate the oxymoronic nature of the phrase "military intelligence". Finding themselves drafted, the workmen are sent to repair the roads ahead of the Allied advance through war-torn Europe by the sergeant they previously embarrassed. Norman finds himself behind the German lines, joins up with French Resistance, gets captured then sets out to rescue British prisoners from a German military HQ by impersonating General Schreiber. Of course Wisdom plays Schreiber too. The Square Peg is the film that introduced Norman Wisdom's famous catch-phrase, "Mr. Grimsdale!". Also here Hattie Jacques gets to sing a remarkable duet with Wisdom, and a pre-Goldfinger Honor Blackman provides the love interest. Following his rising star was just what Norman Wisdom's audience had been doing all through the 1950s and, by 1959, and after six films with director John Paddy Carstairs, it was time for a change. Hence Robert Asher made his directorial debut with Follow a Star. The plot is a comedy version of A Star is Born (1954), with Norman yet again playing a dreaming shop worker, this time aspiring to singing stardom. Vernon Carew (played by Wisdom regular Jerry Desmonde) is the fading singer who schemes to use Wisdom's talent to sustain his own rapidly failing career, while the girl is overlooked starlette June Laverick. Norman is surrounded by a particularly strong supporting cast, with Hattie Jacques returning from The Square Peg (1958), Richard Wattis, John Le Mesurier, Fenella Fielding, Ron Moody and, uncredited, future Bond villain Charles Grey. --Gary S Dalkin
