After he successfully rescues her from a leap into the bay he finds himself becoming obsessed with the beautiful and troubled woman...

Driven by despair Laura starts her own research and comes across a possible 'miracle cure' which involves neither drugs nor radical surgery. It's a special diet and much frowned on by Robbie's doctors. But to Laura it's his last chance and she's going to take on the medical establisment. Double Academy Award winner Meryl Streep gives a magnificent performance as a mother fighting for her epileptic son's rights to a miracle cure in this heart-rending but inspiring true story.

  To Catch a ThiefThis minor 1955 work by Alfred Hitchcock, one of the lighter entries of his creative peak in the 1950s, is still imbued with the master's stock themes of shared guilt and romantic ambivalence. It is also hardly lacking in Hitchcockian cinematic inventiveness, such as a famous, often-imitated sequence in which some smooching between stars Cary Grant and Grace Kelly is intercut with a fireworks show that just happens to be going on outside in a Riviera setting. Grant plays a reformed cat burglar who is suspected of reviving his trade, though he knows someone else is using his old methods. A very enjoyable experience, but don't get this confused with Hitchcock's other Cary Grant film of that decade, a true masterpiece: North by Northwest. --Tom Keogh The Country GirlIn retrospect, George Seaton's adaptation of The Country Girl seems like the movie that was made to prove that both Bing Crosby and Grace Kelly could act. The tale of an alcoholic actor and singer (Crosby) and his long-suffering wife (Kelly) whose marriage is put to the test when he gets a second chance at stardom, Clifford Odets' drama is chock full of twists and turns designed to give actors a gruelling workout, with its hidden secrets, tortured love story, and frank depiction of the horrors of alcohol abuse. Crosby and Kelly sank their teeth into the meaty roles with gusto (it helped that a rock-solid William Holden was there for each to spark off of), and both were showered with accolades that remained high points of their careers. Crosby was lauded with kudos for turning his charming persona inside-out, but it was Kelly who stole the show, possibly because at the time she was one of the hardest working women in show business. In 1954, the actress appeared in four films, including the Alfred Hitchcock classics Dial M for Murder and Rear Window, and finally ascended to leading-lady status after her stellar supporting turns in High Noon and Mogambo. In typical Hollywood fashion, though, it was only when Kelly shrouded her breathtaking beauty in plain clothes and a dowdy hairdo that she was taken seriously and awarded a Best Actress Oscar--one of the most highly contested ever, as she beat out comeback star Judy Garland's ferocious performance in A Star Is Born. --Mark Englehart

  Chain up! Season 3 of this gripping HISTORY™ series gets plenty of traction from its setting, the more than 400-mile "gauntlet of terror" known as the Dalton Highway. Said to be the most dangerous road in North America, the Dalton has reportedly claimed a life for each of its miles. "If the curves don't get you," the narrator intones in a dramatic John Wayne-like drawl, "the avalanches will." The drivers, a right-stuff bunch ("They don't pay us this much because it's easy," one proclaims), have 12 weeks to deliver more than 6,000 loads to the Prudhoe Bay oil fields before the ice roads thaw. Along with familiar grizzled ice road veterans Hugh and George from the show's first two seasons, season 3 shifts gears with its first female driver, the attractive Lisa Kelly, a motocross champion determined to prove herself as a heavy hauler in this male-dominated profession. The competition between the drivers to see who can make the most runs really takes a back seat to the potential calamities that await beyond every curve and over every steep incline. "Pick the wrong gear, you wash out," the narrator cautions, "hit the brakes too hard, you end up in a ditch." The road, it is said, never lets up, and neither does Ice Road Truckers. Photos of horrific crashes and computer-generated re-creations of serious accidents amp up the drama, but (spoiler alert), beyond tense moments driving through blinding storms or experiencing equipment malfunctions, the drivers emerge from this punishing season unscathed. Ice Road Truckers will especially appeal to truck enthusiasts who may have grown up with the Road Construction Ahead and There Goes a Truck videos. These drivers do some serious hauling (45,000 pounds is considered a light load) and it is fascinating, for example, to watch how 16-ton pipes are loaded and secured onto a flatbed. A feature film inspired by the series is reportedly in the works, but there's nothing like the real thing. --Donald Liebenson

  Part love story, part comedy, part study of madness, Some Voices is above all a beautifully observed, elegantly written and brilliantly acted low-key British film. The story of Ray (Daniel Craig) and his relationships with his brother Pete (Dave Morrissey) and new girlfriend Laura (Kelly Macdonald) after his release from psychiatric hospital, it is the interaction between the three that forms the cornerstone of the movie. Craig dominates proceedings as his character finds himself needlessly torn between the two, capturing Ray's descent into madness far better than the rather unnecessary over use of visual effects. The interplay between all three is superb, particularly Craig and Macdonald who spend the first two-thirds of the story developing a dependence that is pure sweetness and light before darkness descends. Director Simon Cellan Jones (whose previous credits include Our Friends in the North) allows his first feature film to develop at it's own pace, letting the script and performances dictate the action. The West London setting fizzes with a life that Notting Hill barely hinted at, proving that a movie set in the capital (or indeed made in Britain) doesn't have to rely on mock cockney gangster stereotypes to reflect the city. This is a self-assured, engaging and ultimately moving piece of filmmaking. On the DVD: The accompanying documentary and interviews offer little insight into the process and are edited down to minute-long segments with little attempt to examine the bigger picture. Jones' commentary, however, does provide an interesting insight into the perils of making a film on a small budget. --Phil Udell

  Jim Kelly, the star of Black Samurai, was a multi-talented martial artist perhaps best remembered for his role in Bruce Lee's Enter the Dragon. Black Samurai is essentially a vehicle for his fighting skills in which he plays a secret agent out to retrieve his Japanese sweetheart from the drug-dealing Satanist who has abducted her to blackmail her father. His investigative skills are almost non-existent--much of the plot consists of his arriving at the villains' houses and hitting people. At the same time, the character's utter ruthlessness and the extravagant evil of the villains, the chief of whom, Jannicot, is in the habit of sicking a vulture on his enemies, are entertaining enough and the 1970s styling unselfconsciously entertaining. The director, Al Adamson, was mostly famous for his horror films, and there is a Gothic extravagance to the sets and gimmicks here: Kelly's jet-pack sequence has to be seen to be believed. On the DVD: The DVD comes with a wonderful period trailer for The Green Hornet, the usual chapter selection, biographies of Kelly and Adamson (who was murdered in 1995) and a feature which enables you to look at the fight scenes in isolation. --Roz Kaveney

  It is difficult to know who this compilation of nominees for the 2002 BRIT Awards is aimed at. It is implausible that anybody will like everything here, and it is unbelievable that anyone possessed of rudimentary critical faculties will like more than three or four of the artists whose videos feature in this collection. Given the perennial determination of the BRITs to celebrate all that is mediocre, and the fact that 2001 was less than a vintage year by any standards, "BRIT Awards 2002" is mostly rather dismal viewing. There are a few heartening moments: Kylie Minogue releasing a decent single ("Can't Get You out of My Head") is testament more to the law of averages than her musical abilities, but the video is a small masterpiece of choreography and computer imaging. Destiny's Child and Dido also owe particular thanks to their directors, though it might reasonably be argued that the bulldozer that eventually destroys the house in which Dido simpers along to "Thank You" arrives about four minutes too late. Probably coincidentally, the best three videos (and the best three songs) are all animated affairs: Daft Punk's "Digital Love", Gorillaz' "Clint Eastwood" and Radiohead's typically baleful, and beautiful, "Pyramid Song". On the DVD: That individual tracks can be easily selected is a necessity with a compilation of this sort. The "bonus features" are barely worthy of the phrase: extremely desultory biographies of the artists, and links to the official Web sites of the BRITs and Sony. --Andrew Mueller
