  • 10CC - Clever Clogs10CC - Clever Clogs | DVD | (12/05/2008) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £14.99

'I'm not in love' 'Rubber Bullets' and 'Dreadlock Holiday' - Classic tracks from one of the most interesting and talented bands to ever grace the world of music are all included in this live collection of songs alongside new tracks and presented on DVD for the very first time. 10cc were formed in 1972 with the line up of Eric Stewart Graham Gouldman Kevin Godley and Lol Creme. The rulebook was thrown out of the window as their unrivalled songs injected with sharp wit and lyrical dexterity plucked melodies and subject matter from previously undiscovered waters to turn the band both into chart regulars and darlings of the critics. They were one of many bands dubbed at the time as 'the new Beatles' - but unlike most of the others 10cc actually came close to the Fab Four in terms of hits and quality. After Godley and Creme left in 1976 Eric and Graham decided to carry on as 10cc and were augmented by amongst others guitarist Rick Fenn and drummer Paul Burgess. And the hits kept on coming. Then after years of lying dormant while they all pursued other ventures Graham Gouldman along with Fenn Burgess Mick Wilson and Mike Stevens has taken to the road again as '10cc featuring Graham Gouldman and friends'. This DVD includes two appearances that Kevin Godley made as one of the 'friends' at a gig in Cardiff - when he graced the stage for the first time in almost 30 years and again at the landmark Shepherd's Bush Empire show in London. The set list on the DVD includes no fewer than 17 hit songs including some written by Graham for other artists including the Yardbird's For Your Love and the Hollies' Bus Stop .The DVD ""Clever Clogs"" also features original artwork and an interview from the originator of all of 10cc's best known album artwork the legendary designer and founder of Hipnosis Storm Thorgerson. The band which includes Take That and Mika's musical director Mike Stevens and the multi talented Mick Wilson will be playing a series of concerts in support of this release including a showcase at London's indigO2venue on 1 May 2008. • Van Helsing (Two Disc Collector's Edition) [2004]Van Helsing (Two Disc Collector's Edition) | DVD | (11/10/2004) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £24.99

Like a roller coaster ready to fly off its rails, Van Helsing rockets to maximum velocity and never slows down. Having earned blockbuster clout with The Mummy and The Mummy Returns, writer-director Stephen Sommers once again plunders Universal's monster vault and pulls out all the stops for this mammoth $148-million action-adventure-horror-comedy, which opens (sans credits) with a terrific black-and-white prologue that pays homage to the Universal horror classics that inspired it. The plot pits legendary vampire hunter Van Helsing (Hugh Jackman) against Dracula (the deliciously campy Richard Roxburgh), his deadly blood-sucking brides, and the Wolfman (Will Kemp) in a two-hour parade of outstanding special effects (980 in all) that turn Sommers' juvenile plot into a triple-overtime bonus for CGI animators. In alliance with a Transylvanian princess (Kate Beckinsale) and the Frankenstein monster (Shuler Hensley), Van Helsing must prevent Dracula from hatching his bat-winged progeny, and there's so much good-humored action that you're guaranteed to be thrilled and exhausted by the time the 10-minute end-credits roll. It's loud, obnoxious, filled with revisionist horror folklore, and aimed at addicted gamers and eight-year-olds, but this colossal monster mash (including Mr. Hyde, just for kicks) will never, ever bore you. A sequel is virtually guaranteed. --Jeff Shannon

  • Inspector Morse - Disc 3 And 4 - Service Of All The Dead / Wolvercote Tongue [1987]Inspector Morse - Disc 3 And 4 - Service Of All The Dead / Wolvercote Tongue | DVD | (20/05/2002) from £9.98   |  Saving you £5.01 (33.40%)   |  RRP £14.99

When Inspector Morse first appeared on television in 1987, nobody could have predicted that it would run into the next century, maintaining throughout a quality of scripts and story lines that raised the genre of the detective series to a new level. Much of its success can be attributed to John Thaw's total immersion in the role. Morse is a prickly character and not obviously easy to like. As a detective in Oxford with unfulfilled academic propensities, he is permanently excluded from a world of which he would dearly love to be a part. He is at odds with that world--and with his colleagues in the police force--most of the time. Passionate about opera and "proper beer", he is a cultural snob for whom vulgarity causes almost physical pain. As a result, he lives from one disillusionment to another. And he is scarred--more deeply than he would ever admit--by past relationships. But he also has a naïve streak and, deep-down sensitivity, which makes him a fascinating challenge for women. At the heart of Morse's professional life is his awkward partnership with Detective Sergeant Lewis, the resolutely ordinary, worldly sidekick who manages to keep his boss in an almost permanent state of exasperation while retaining his grudging respect. It's a testament to Kevin Whateley's consistently excellent performance that from such unpromising material, Lewis becomes as indispensable to the series as Barrington Pheloung's hypnotic, classic theme music. Morse's investigations do occasionally take him abroad to more exotic locations, but throughout 14 successful years of often gruesome murders, the city of Oxford itself became a central character in these brooding two-hour dramas: creator Colin Dexter stating he finally had to kill Morse off because he was giving Oxford a bad reputation as a dangerous place! --Piers Ford
