The opening credits of Spanish Fly promise "Leslie Phillips vs. Terry-Thomas", making this the British comic innuendo version of King Kong vs. Godzilla or Frankenstein vs. the Wolf Man, with the two masters of fnarr-fnarr lecherous English lounge lizardry pitted against each other. It's a sunstruck, terminally silly slice of fluff of the stripe that passed for a sex film in 1976 ("Go and butter yourself", someone says) but seems almost comically innocent these days. The sort of film that boasts special credits for women's fashions by Cornelia James and underwear by Janet Reger, it tells the story of a gap-toothed con man (Thomas) exiled to sunny Spain. He adds ground-up cantharides to undrinkable plonk to create a market for aphrodisiac wine, and impotent underwear tycoon (Phillips) benefits from the effects of the product as he gets to grips with four lovely models, until his wife (Sue Lloyd) shows up and a side-effect means he starts barking like a dog. The stars are game, but the material--from a story by producer Peter James, now a horror novelist--is skimpier than the starlets' bikinis and none of the pretty girls has any comic timing (though they all get topless scenes). Students of British pop culture will note the bizarre juxtaposition of hiring an uncredited Francis Matthews, the upright voice of Captain Scarlet, to dub the roles of a gay Spanish photographer and (for one bad gag) a disgusted dog. Released in late 1999, The Bone Collector was originally promoted as a thriller in the tradition of The Silence of the Lambs and Seven, suggesting that it would earn a place among those earlier, better films. Nice try, but no cigar. The Bone Collector settles instead for mere competence and the modest rewards of a well-handled formula. With a terrific cast at his service, director Phillip Noyce (Dead Calm, Patriot Games) turns the pulpy indulgence of Jeffery Deaver's novel into a slick potboiler that is grisly fun only if you don't pick it apart. Noyce expertly builds palpable tension around a series of gruesome murders that lead us into the darkest nooks of New York City. Now a bedridden quadriplegic prone to life-threatening seizures and suicidal depression, forensics detective Lincoln Rhyme (Denzel Washington) gets a new lease on life with a sharp young beat cop (Angelina Jolie) who's a wizard at analyzing crime scenes. She does field work while he deciphers clues from his high-tech Manhattan loft, and as they narrow the search their lives are increasingly endangered. As this formulaic plot grows mouldy, Noyce resorts to narrative shortcuts, using perfunctory scenes to manipulate the viewer and taking morbid pleasure in his revelation of the murder scenes. And yet it all works, to a point, and the cast (including Queen Latifah and Luiz Guzmán) is much better than the material. If you're looking for a few good thrills, The Bone Collector is a pretty safe bet. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

Breakout is a 1975 jailbreak vehicle for Charles Bronson and wife Jill Ireland. It also stars Robert Duvall as Jay Wagner, framed by his wealthy but scheming grandfather (John Huston) and sentenced to 28 years in a Mexican jail. Ireland plays his concerned wife who enlists the help of small-time pilot Nick Colton (Bronson) to get Duvall out of jail in an audacious escape plot. While supporting actors such as Randy Quaid as Bronson's sidekick bring a little enthusiasm to their parts, the major players do not. Bronson and Ireland deliver their parts with the stiltedness of a first run-through, while Robert Duvall's mind seems entirely elsewhere, as if he's unable to believe he's involved in such an inauspicious project. His character seems strangely indifferent to his fate, an indifference which spreads swiftly to the audience. The escape sequence takes an eternity to arrive and when it does is almost breathtakingly underwhelming. Only the gruesomely depicted death of a bad guy, slashed to pieces by a propeller on a runaway, strikes a pleasingly jarring note. Otherwise, you almost feel sorry for this film, so manifestly unloved is it by those who conceived and participated in it. On the DVD: Breakout on disc is presented in anamorphic widescreen format. There are no extras other than subtitles. --David Stubbs
