  Home cinema was practically invented for Die Hard movies. The first film in particular remains an unbeatable action classic, a mixture of taut situations, Bruce Willis in excellent form as John McClane, and some outstanding directorial work from John McTiernan. The sequels? Well, everyone has their favourite. Take your pick from Dulles International Airport being taken over by terrorists at Christmas, Willis and Samuel L Jackson joining forces to tear through New York City, or computer hackers looking to bring things to a standstill. It’s four films, rammed full of action, and unashamedly so. The main reason for upgrading the films to Blu-ray, in this case, is to see what’s been done with the physical presentation of them. The news here is good: the Die Hard Quadrilogy sparkles in high definition, with razor sharp imagery, and fast moving action flashing before your eyes. And then there’s the sound mix, a workout for whatever scale of speaker setup that you have. The deal is then sweetened by the inclusion of a varied collection of behind the scenes material for each of the films, with some of the archive pieces in particular being of real interest. Yet ultimately, it’s the four films, in tip-top condition, that make the Die Hard Quadrilogy a Blu-ray must-have. Top quality action, fabulous set pieces and excellent presentation: it’s a set not to be missed.

He was sentenced to four years in a hellish Turkish prison on a drug possession charge, but his sentence was later extended (though not by 30 years, as the film suggests), and Hayes endured unthinkable brutality and torture before his escape in 1975. Unquestionably, this is a superbly crafted film, provoking a visceral response that's powerful enough to boil your blood. By the time Hayes erupts in an explosion of self-defensive violence, Parker and Stone have proven the power--and danger--of their skill. Their film is deeply manipulative, extremely xenophobic, and embellishes reality to heighten its calculated impact. Is that a crime? Not necessarily, and there's no doubt that Midnight Express is expertly directed and blessed with exceptional supporting performances (especially from John Hurt as a long-term prisoner).   Benjamin Britten's dour masterpiece Peter Grimes has been well-served in video recordings, yet this stark, intense production may become the top choice for most viewers. One of its major attractions is outstanding camerawork, under the direction of Barrie Gavin, powerfully reinforcing the shifting moods created by the music. The photography is notable in frequent close-ups, particularly those that focus on the ravaged, vulnerable and intensely expressive face of Philip Langridge in the title role. His interpretation is strikingly different from that of his chief video rival, Jon Vickers, who presents a more burly characterisation. The ambiguities in the role of Grimes make it possible to emphasise either strength or vulnerability in this story of an alienated fisherman, who stands virtually alone against a small (and small-minded society), vast forces of nature and a run of bad luck. His young apprentice has died (possibly because of his neglect or brutality); he is legally acquitted but found guilty by his neighbours and forbidden to take another boy as apprentice. He ignores that warning, the second boy dies accidentally, and he commits suicide under intense public pressure. Langridge gives a striking account of the role's psychological depth and complexity, aided by a well-chosen and directed cast. James Atherton conducts expertly. The chorus and orchestra are first-class, and the famous sea interludes, which have found a secure place in the concert repertoire, are visually enhanced by views of the ocean and shoreline. --Joe McLellan
