Compared to the spectacular shows other performers put on these days, the concert featured on Homecoming--A-Ha Live at Vallhall is a very simple affair. There's no fancy lighting or special effects, with the plain stage set looking like a remnant from the 1996 Eurovision Song Contest. In fact with the guys' looks and music having changed little after nearly two decades in the business, the concert has a distinct feel of 1985 about it. That said, the track-listing contains an equal sprinkling of greatest hits, and songs from the more recent Minor Earth Major Sky. The newer tracks sit particularly well alongside the classics, and you can detect the trio's joy of being able to perform the newer songs such as "Little Black Heart" and "Summer Moved On" live. The home audience, many who grew up listening to A-Ha, clearly adore the guys just as much they did when they were teens. Sadly judging by the shots of the audience, the fans (predominantly 30-something women) haven't aged as well as Harket and co. On the DVD: Homecoming on disc has a great audio soundtrack (Dolby Digital 5.1), but the concert visuals are grainy and poor. This is more than compensated for by the vast amount of bonus material included. As well as three short documentaries on how Pal, Magne and Morten spent their seven-year break from A-Ha, there's a 20-minute interview with the band and behind-the-scenes footage of the after show party presented by a rather annoying Ian Wright. As well additional live performances of "Early Morning" and "Summer Moved On" recorded at a benefit concert, the videos for the four singles from Minor Earth Major Sky are included. The comprehensive English subtitles are particularly handy for understanding the Norwegian dialogue during the concert. --John Galilee

A documentary film by Bruno Monsaingeon devoted to the 20th century's greatest violinists, The Art of Violin really cannot be faulted. The same, incidentally, can also be said of the similar volumes which cover the piano and singing, so there's never been a better time to collect a personal audio-visual archive of some wonderful historical performers. The added dimension provided by the painstakingly collected film material (here featuring no fewer than 20 outstanding soloists) is of course of exceptional value when observing violin technique, and the diversity of approaches presented here in loving detail is in itself a subject for endless comparison. The material mixes archive performance footage, much of which one might never have dreamed existed, with interviews and documentary commentary. However, rather than turn the project into a museum piece, Monsaingeon includes contributions from contemporary figures such as Perlman and, shrewdly, Hilary Hahn--not that there'd be any doubt of the huge relevance of the material to any contemporary player or lover of the repertoire. An absolute must. --Roger Thomas

Sergei Eisenstein's revolutionary sophomore feature has so long stood as a textbook example of montage editing that many have forgotten what an invigoratingly cinematic experience he created. A 20th-anniversary tribute to the 1905 revolution, Eisenstein portrays the revolt in microcosm with a dramatisation of the real-life mutiny aboard the battleship Potemkin. The story tells a familiar party-line message of the oppressed working class (in this case the enlisted sailors) banding together to overthrow their oppressors (the ship's officers), led by proto-revolutionary Vakulinchuk. When he dies in the shipboard struggle the crew lays his body to rest on the pier, a moody, moving scene where the citizens of Odessa slowly emerge from the fog to pay their respects. As the crowd grows Eisenstein turns the tenor from mourning a fallen comrade to celebrating the collective achievement. The government responds by sending soldiers and ships to deal with the mutinous crew and the supportive townspeople, which climaxes in the justly famous (and often imitated and parodied) Odessa Steps massacre. Eisenstein edits carefully orchestrated motions within the frame to create broad swaths of movement, shots of varying length to build the rhythm, close-ups for perspective and shock effect, and symbolic imagery for commentary, all to create one of the most cinematically exciting sequences in film history. Eisenstein's film is Marxist propaganda to be sure but the power of this masterpiece lies not in its preaching but its poetry. --Sean Axmaker
