One of the most controversial films of the 1940s the gangster thriller No Orchids For Miss Blandish caused outrage amongst critics cinema audiences and censors alike on both sides of the Atlantic when it was first released in 1948. Virginal young heiress Miss Blandish (Linda Travers) is kidnapped by a couple of small time hoods only to find herself seized from them by gangster Slim Grissom (Jack LaRue). He isn't just interested in her for the ransom money - and neither are the other members of the Grissom gang. Despite her terrifying ordeal Miss Blandish finds herself perversely attracted to the gang leader. They plan to run off together but amongst gangsters life is cheap -and a double cross is always just around the corner. Based on the best-selling novel by James Hadley Chase No Orchids For Miss Blandish's mixture of sex sadism and gutter morals outraged the world. The book itself was ferociously condemned provoking George Orwell to defend it as 'a brilliant piece of writing'. It was also the most-read book amongst members of Britain's armed forces during the Second World.

49th Parallel is a powerful and important piece of World War 2 propaganda which controversially was filmed from the point of view of a group of German soldiers. Asked to make a flag waver by the Ministry of Information the brilliantly gifted film-making team of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger elected to set the action in Canada. The film features a stellar cast who all waived their fees in the interests of the war. A Nazi U-boat is sunk by the Canadian Air Force and all the crew are lost except six men who had been sent ashore before the attack. They stumble across an Eskimo village where Scott Peter and his Eskimo servant Martin live. Also present is a French trapper Johnnie (played by Laurence Olivier) who panics when held at gunpoint and is shot by one of the Nazis. After this the Allies send an S.O.S. plane and it is the intention of the Nazis to hijack it and fly to neutral America. When the plane arrives there is a scuffle but they manage to take off. Will they be caught before they kill again?

The last film directed by John Cassavetes, Big Trouble reteamed some of the creators of the much funnier The In-laws. But despite another script by Andrew Bergman, and a cast that reunited Alan Arkin and Peter Falk, this comedy doesn't live up to its predecessor. A spoof of Double Indemnity, the film casts Arkin as a nervous insurance agent faced with huge college tuition bills for a trio of sons headed for Yale. To make extra money, he gets involved in a scheme with a woman (Beverly D'Angelo) trying to kill her husband (Falk). That the whole thing turns out to be an adventure in insurance fraud shouldn't come as a surprise. Despite an inconsistent script, the chemistry between Arkin and Falk can still produce the occasional laugh. --Marshall Fine

In 1974 the most celebrated American R&B acts of the time came together with the most renowned musical groups in Southern Africa for a 12-hour three-night long concert held in Kinshasa Zaire. The pipe dream of musician Hugh Masekela and producer Stewart Levine this music festival became a reality when they convinced boxing promoter Don King to combine the event with The Rumble in the Jungle the epic fight between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman previously chronicled in the Academy Award winning documentary When We Were Kings. Soul Power is a verit'' documentary entirely composed of footage shot in 1974 at the legendary music festival (dubbed Zaire '74). It shows the experiences and performances of such musical luminaries as James Brown BB King Bill Withers Celia Cruz Miriam Makeba among a host of others. At the peak of their talents and the height of their careers these artists were inspired by this return to their African roots as well as the enthusiasm of the Zairian audience to give the performances of their lives. The concert has achieved mythological significance as the definitive Africa(n)-American musical event of the 20th Century. Soul Power has been crafted from the extensive footage which remained after the making of When We Were Kings which famously documented the epic title fight but only briefly touched upon the Zaire '74 music festival. This footage has remained vaulted for the past 35 years unused unseen until now. Lensed primarily by celebrated cinematographers Albert Maysles (Gimme Shelter Grey Gardens) Paul Goldsmith (Rust Never Sleeps) Kevin Keating (Harlan County USA) and Roderick Young (Wattstax) Soul Power finally provides today's audience the opportunity to experience this historic musical event in all of its magnificent filmed glory restored with incredible sound quality. An unbridled musical journey for the ages.

The ballet Giselle had it's world premiere on June 28th 1841 at the Opera de Paris. The work has a very special significance within the Ballet Nacional de Cuba's repertory as it was with this ballet and with Alicia Alonso's unique interpretation of the role that Cuba first gained a place in the international world of dance. Thank's to Alonso's interpretation and also to her own choreographic version of Giselle a new order of values was set for this ballet which represents the essence and the apotheosis of the dance from an entire era.

  • Ali G [2002]Ali G | DVD | (18/11/2002) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £49.99

By the marginal-or-miss standards of British TV spin-offs, Ali G in da House is well above adequate, even though it drags out every smart line or decent routine until they lie dead on the screen just begging for a laugh track. The film pulls back a bit from the absolute obnoxiousness of the Ali G TV skits, which makes Sacha Baron Cohen's character bearable at feature length, but also significantly less funny. Here it is finally confirmed that Ali is a weedy white kid called Alistair who pretends to be Jamaican, rather than a weedy white comedian doing a Jamaican character. Believe it or not, there's actually a plot, with a scheming Chancellor of the Exchequer (Charles Dance) recruiting Ali as a parliamentary candidate for Staines in a devious attempt to unseat Prime Minister Michael Gambon. Yet this framework is really an excuse for the sketch-like bits, such as a Los Angeles ghetto movie fantasy, Ali G addressing a meeting of lesbian feminists ("I've seen a lot of your videos"), and Charles Dance forced to read a budget speech in Ali G speak. Oddly, the film makes early-1990s jokes about Tories rather than going after New Labour, but any political satire here comes in second to knob-polishing jokes and sometimes-hilarious patter. Luckless inhabitants of the M4 corridor will nod ruefully at the final gag, in which Ali G persuades the PM not to devastate Staines and nods agreement as Gambon reassures him, "it's all right, we'll destroy Slough instead". --Kim Newman
