After a string of successes on the big screen, So What Now marks the return of comedian Lee Evans to television and his first sitcom. Scripted by Evans himself, the show has an old-fashioned feel to it, recalling at times various comedy series of the 1970s. Evans' character, Lee, is a mere extension of his live performance persona--a rambling, accident-prone loser whose split from his wife forces him into a domestic situation with the slovenly Stuart (O'Donnell) and man-eating yuppie, Heather (Thomson). There is much of Michael Crawford's hapless Frank Spencer in Lee, especially in the visual set pieces that form the cornerstone of the show. Given his strong acting and writing pedigree, this has to be seen as a disappointment for Evans; the combination of weak script and less than inspiring performances mean that So What Now is only a sporadic success. --Phil Udell

  • Funny Bones [1995]Funny Bones | DVD | (22/03/2004) from £20.00   |  Saving you £-5.01 (N/A%)   |  RRP £14.99

Funny Bones, directed by Peter Chelsom (Hear My Song), is a weird but intriguing comedy with a particularly dark edge. Oliver Platt plays a would-be comedian, the son of a major comedy star (Jerry Lewis); dad's reputation even overshadows his son's Las Vegas debut. After that flop the son tries to go back to his roots and heads across the Atlantic for his father's launch pad in Blackpool. There, he meets his previously unknown half-brother (Lee Evans), a bizarre comedy savant who teaches him a thing or two about taking risks to get laughs, and discovers a secret about how his father got started. Platt is likably lost and Lewis is perfectly overbearing, but the real find here is Evans, making his cinematic debut as the rubber-faced, protean comic with always surprising material. --Marshall Fine

When Elle discovers Warner's brother is engaged to a law student she discovers enrolling at Harvard might be the way to prove she is serious. She studies for the LSATs submits a video essay - in which she appears in a sequined bikini - and miraculously is accepted. At first Elle is rebuked by Professor Stromwell (Holland Taylor) and is the target of snide comments from other students. But gradually it becomes clear that Elle is no fish out of water; she is smarter more driven and more likely to survive in the rarefied Harvard atmosphere than anyone else. Witherspoon gets fine support from Selma Blair as Warner's new fiancee Jennifer Coolidge as a beautician Victor Garber as an unscrupulous professor Ali Larter as a client from Elle's sorority and Luke Wilson as a lawyer fascinated by Elle's unconventional approach. There's Something About Mary (Dir. Bobby & Peter Farrelly 1998): Still suffering from a High School crush on Mary (Cameron Diaz) the nerdy angst-driven Ted (Ben Stiller) tracks her down thirteen years later with the help of a sleazy private investigator (Matt Dillon) who also falls for her. Unfortunately both men discover that virtually every man who sets his eyes on the dazzling Mary finds himself head over heels in love and determined to win her hand. The wacky Farrelly Brothers have pushed the envelope again creating another outrageous movie experience guaranteed to make you laugh and keep you coming back for more. Shallow Hal (Dir. Bobby & Peter Farrelly 2001): Hal Larsen is the ultimate shallow guy. Hal finds beauty only in supermodels and centrefolds. The first thing he looks for in a woman is looks. • Blue Lamp, The / The Nanny [1965]Blue Lamp, The / The Nanny | DVD | (23/06/2003) from £14.99   |  Saving you £1.00 (6.67%)   |  RRP £15.99

This is a double-feature of two British crime classics, The Blue Lamp (1949) and The Nanny (1965). The Blue Lamp is the film that introduced PC George Dixon, played by Jack Warner, later immortalised in the BBC's long-running Dixon of Dock Green (1955-76). Here Dixon's murder is the catalyst for an exciting London manhunt, shot largely on location in a fast-moving, starkly efficient style showing the influence of The Naked City (1948). The war-damaged East End and the car chases through almost vehicle-free streets offer a documentary-like vision of a London now long gone, and a young Dirk Bogarde makes a serious impact in an early starring role. In contrast, The Nanny has a superstar, the imported Hollywood legend Bette Davis, in the declining years of her career. Just one of three psychological thrillers Hammer produced in 1965 (the others were Frantic and Hysteria), the film capitalises on the popularity of Davis's Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962) with a comparable mix of hateful insanity and paranoia. The screenplay skilfully juggles the audience's sympathies between a superb Davis and the dysfunctional family of which she becomes a part, developing a powerful sense of dread which shows such clichéd later fare as The Hand That Rocks the Cradle (1992) how to do this sort of thing with real class. On the DVD: The Blue Lamp and The Nanny are presented in black and white with adequate mono sound. The Blue Lamp is in its original 4:3 ratio; The Nanny is cropped from its theatrical 1.85:1 to 4:3, though it's only in a few shots that it becomes obvious that information is missing at the sides of the screen. The print of The Blue Lamp is soft and grainy, while The Nanny is grainy with a considerable amount of flicker. There are no extras. --Gary S. Dalkin

  • The Mighty Quinn [1989]The Mighty Quinn | DVD | (19/05/2003) from £9.43   |  Saving you £3.56 (37.75%)   |  RRP £12.99

A highly enjoyable sleeper, The Mighty Quinn is a variation on one of those 1930s studio pictures about two boyhood friends who grow up on different sides of the law. But it's 1989, and things are a bit different. Denzel Washington, smooth as Jamaican rum, plays the police chief of a Caribbean island, a place where crime isn't exactly a pressing concern. Thus the chief is put out when the clues in a murder case point to his old buddy, a dreadlocked ne'er-do-well played by a mischievous Robert Townsend. Director Carl Schenkel is much more interested in friendships and great island atmosphere than in the actual unlocking of the case, and that's just fine. Add in a bouncy soundtrack of reggae music, and The Mighty Quinn becomes one of those hard-to-resist vacation movies. --Robert Horton

Frank Zito (a career performance by co-writer/co-executive producer Joe Spinell of 'Rocky' and 'The Godfather' fame) is a deeply disturbed man haunted by the traumas of unspeakable childhood abuse. And when these horrific memories begin to scream inside his mind Frank prowls the seedy streets of New York City to stalk and slaughter innocent young women. This is the story of a maniac. Experience 'Maniac' like you've never seen or heard it before. • The ABBA Story - The Winner Takes It All [1999]The ABBA Story - The Winner Takes It All | DVD | (17/09/2001) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £15.99

The Winner Takes It All--The ABBA Story reflects the peaks and troughs of the Swedish supergroup's popularity over the decades, as well as the quartet's turbulent years together. Initially labelled as just another trashy Eurovision act following their win with "Waterloo" in 1974, the group confounded their critics by emerging as a credible musical team with superior songwriting abilities. Following a few years of mass adoration the punters got tired, and for most of the 1980s the group, along with their fans, were forced into years of hibernation and denial. Luckily a new dawn rose in the early 1990s with the emergence of ABBA tribute bands such as Bjorn Again, the appropriation of the group's music in the movies Priscilla Queen of the Desert and Muriel's Wedding, and the global success of the ABBA Gold greatest hits collection. This documentary successfully manages to piece together both the public and private side of the group, through the use of interview excerpts and video footage. The DVD also contains exclusive interviews with all four members of the band for the first time since their split. Reflecting on the intricate nature of their music, as well as the elevation of their compositions to the heady heights of pop classics, the documentary concludes with behind-the-scenes footage of preparations for the ABBA-inspired West End stage show Mamma Mia!. This is a must for all ABBA fans, as well as those wishing to discover the heritage of one of the world's greatest pop groups. On The DVD: although boasting 30 minutes of extra footage, interviews and music, this release is basically an extended version of the television documentary (of the same name) broadcast in 1999. The DVD version of the programme has been segmented into 20 chapters, labelled with names of classic ABBA tunes, which reflect the themes of particular parts of the narrative. Unfortunately all of the additional DVD footage has been subsumed into the documentary and cannot be accessed individually. There are no other extra DVD features (not even subtitles), and the main menu only allows access to the individual chapters. --John Galilee
