  Based on Caroline Graham's novels and featuring the stolid crime-solving skills of Detective Chief Inspector Barnaby, Midsomer Murders made their television debut in 1997 and continue to keep viewers happy with that potent whodunnit ingredient: spectacularly bloody murders in the most tranquil rural settings the Shires have to offer. Midsomer is a vaguely defined area of villages and hamlets with charming names like Badger's Drift and Goodman's Land. It also has the highest number of violent deaths per capita outside the average war zone. Serial killings abound to test the nerve of Barnaby (John Nettles) and his sidekick Sergeant Troy (Daniel Casey), a dullard easily perplexed by a world which refuses to stick to his black and white view of things. Nettles is excellent; there's a hint of Bergerac still, now heavier of jowl and broader of beam, though the chasing is necessarily limited and the DCI enjoys the home comforts of an understanding wife and a spirited daughter. "Every time I go into any Midsomer village, it's always the same thing", he huffs. "Blackmail, sexual deviancy, suicide and murder." Ain't it the truth? The murders are astonishing. Family feuds, jealousy, incest, industrial espionage, all erupt at regular intervals leaving a trail of bodies with throats slashed, limbs dismembered and blood absolutely everywhere. Rivers of sheer nastiness run deep beneath the superficially pastoral perfection of Midsomer. Thank goodness there are still men like dependable Barnaby to get to the bottom of things. Eventually. Sure of Barnaby’s eventual success, Midsomer Murders make for a cosy, even comforting, couple of hours curled up in front of the television. And they make a great showcase for star turns from the great stable of British character actors, too, from Celia Imrie and Elizabeth Spriggs to Imelda Staunton and Duncan Preston, who invariably turn this whimsical stuff into the tastiest possible ham.--Piers Ford

  The Eyes of Laura Mars put an original spin on the "women in peril" plot staple by giving us Faye Dunaway as a fashion photographer disturbed by visions of real violence echoed in her flashy, S&M-influenced work. The visions start coming closer to home as her woman friends are butchered and their copies of her work vandalised. Good-looking cop Neville (Tommy Lee Jones) argues that her art is responsible, but nonetheless starts an affair with her. Hints are dropped that the killer might be someone close to her, like obsessive ex-con driver Tommy (Brad Dourif) or her possessive ex-husband Michael (Raul Julia). Evocative scenes of 70s' New York nightclub excess, and the strikingly perverse photographs of Helmut Newton, now create a period 70s' flavour to this flawed psychic thriller. Dunaway's performance is suitably overwrought and the young, slimline Jones is at once attractive and off-key. On the DVD: The DVD comes with subtitles, director's commentary, a publicity short made at the time and an interesting lecturette illustrated with yet more photographs. --Roz Kaveney

  Bruce Lee: A Warrior's Journey is an engrossing, in-depth 100-minute documentary on the martial artist and film star. It features material from Lee's personal archives and interviews with his wife, Linda Lee Cadwell and students and costars including Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Taky Kimura, Bob Wall and Dan Inosanto. The undoubted highlight is the inclusion, for the first time ever, of the complete 34-minute finale to what would have been Lee's final film, Game of Death. Written, directed, produced, choreographed, photographed and designed by Lee, this was intended to be his most personal work and bears little relation to the shoddily assembled film released in cinemas in 1978 under the Game of Death title. Completed by a fitting new score from Wayne Hawkins, the dialogue may be corny but the well-shot action reveals Lee as a master of his art. Also featured are clips from The Big Boss (1971), Fist of Fury (1972), Way of the Dragon (1972) and Enter the Dragon (1973), as well as historic interview footage and excerpts from Lee's appearances in Marlow (1969) and Longstreet (1971). The only drawback is that almost all the movie clips apart from the Game of Death sequences have been panned and scanned, making it sometimes impossible to see the rapid action. Examining Lee's philosophy and motivation as well as his career, this serious, well crafted documentary presents a rounded portrait of a greatly loved star. On the DVD: the picture is presented in conventional television 4:3, with the footage from Game of Death letterboxed at its original 2.35:1 ratio within the 4:3 frame, though it would have been better presented separately in anamorphically enhanced form. TheGame of Death footage is in very good condition, though a handful of shots are either slightly out of focus or have not been colour corrected. The sound is essentially mono except for the new score for Game of Death in Dolby Digital 5.1. Extras are a new 18-minute dramatisation of sections of Lee's outline for the never shot parts of Game of Death, though this material does not include any fight sequences and the modern-day settings and 4:3 TV movie style fail to match the original. More interesting is the commentary by director John Little who adds a lot of background, particularly on Lee's relationship with various people seen in the film. The package is completed by a music video set to footage of Lee, a trailer and optional English subtitles and hearing impaired subtitles. --Gary S Dalkin
