Having made his reputation as one of the most prolific and gifted horror writers of his generation (prompting Stephen King to call him "the future of horror"), Clive Barker made a natural transition to movies with this audacious directorial debut from 1987. Not only did Barker serve up a chilling tale of devilish originality, he also introduced new icons of horror that since have become as popular among genre connoisseurs as Frankenstein's monster and the Wolfman. Foremost among these frightful visions is the sadomasochistic demon affectionately named Pinhead (so named because his pale, bald head is a geometric pincushion and a symbol of eternal pain). Pinhead is the leader of the Cenobites, agents of evil who appear only when someone successfully "solves" the exotic puzzle box called the Lamont Configuration--a mysterious device that opens the door to Hell. The puzzle's latest victim is Frank (Sean Chapman), who now lives in a gelatinous skeletal state in an upstairs room of the British home just purchased by his newlywed half-brother (Andrew Robinson, best known as the villain from Dirty Harry), who has married one of Frank's former lovers (Claire Higgins). The latter is recruited to supply the cannibalistic Frank with fresh victims, enabling him to reconstitute his own flesh--but will Frank succeed in restoring himself completely? Will Pinhead continue to demonstrate the flesh-ripping pleasures of absolute agony? Your reaction to this description should tell you if you've got the stomach for Barker's film, which has since spawned a number of interesting but inferior sequels. It's definitely not for everyone, but there's no denying that it's become a semiclassic of modern horror. --Jeff Shannon

A.I. - Artificial Intelligence 'Artificial Intelligence' is the story of David (Haley Joel Osment) the first mecha (a futuristic term for a mechanized human being) designed with the ability to love. A couple whose son is in a coma adopts David to help them recover from their loss. Naturally things do not go as planned and David is forced to leave the mother (Frances O'Connor) he's been imprinted to love and make his way in the world. Traveling with Teddy a hi-tech stuffed bear David escapes the Flesh Fair where angry humans destroy mechas to purge artificiality and unexpectedly befriends Gigolo Joe (Jude Law) a robot designed to pleasure women. Joe agrees to help David in his quest to become human. The Time Machine (2002): This adaptation of the classic sci-fi adventure tale by H.G. Wells directed by Simon Wells (the great-grandson of the author) stars Guy Pearce as Alex Hartdegen an absent-minded New York professor preoccupied with what passes for technology at the turn of the 20th century. However the one thing that can distract him from his calculations is his love for Emma (Sienna Guillory) his bride-to-be. When tragedy strikes and he loses Emma Alex uses the time-travelling machine that he's built in secret to change the present by going into the past. When that fails to alter fate he leaps forward in time eventually landing 800 000 years in the future an era where humanity has splintered into two races; the docile Eloi and the ferocious Morlocks. There Alex befriends two of the Eloi (Samantha and Omero Mumba) and attempts to help them resist almost certain death at the hands of the Morlocks... Eight Legged Freaks: What do you get when you cross toxic waste with a bunch of exotic spiders? Eaten!!! Mutated ravenous arachnids the size of SUVs invade a tiny Arizona town in this gleeful comedy monster-mash.

French Night is subtitled "An Exceptional Summer Concert from Waldbuhne Berlin, 1992" and was recorded on June 27 of that year with the Berlin Philharmonic delivering a programme of French favourites under the baton of Georges Pretre. The concert begins with Berlioz' Roman Carnival Overture and though the orchestra work hard the full daylight in the amphitheatre setting negates any real engagement. Ravel's Concerto for the Left Hand follows and is the most serious part of the programme, soloist Leon Fleischer making the most of his showcase, though Debussy's L'Après-Midi d'un Faune is really too intimate for such an event. Night has descended for Bizet's Carmen Suite and the show really takes off as the famous tunes fill the arena. The audience equally appreciate Ravel's Bolero before the French part of the evening is capped by some lively dance music from Offenbach and Bizet. Then, to restore local patriotic pride, the Berlin Philharmonic launch into an enthusiastic version of Johann Strauss' Radetzky-March, the familiar closing number from the Vienna Philharmonic's annual New Year's Day concerts. The finale is Paul Lincke's Berliner Luft, a whistle-along favourite which produces some entertainingly diverse audience reaction. A fun evening for all which would have been better had they waited for nightfall. On the DVD: French Night on disc has promos for nine further TDK classical music DVDs but otherwise no extras. The 4:3 picture has all the flaws of live concert footage shot on video, with little detail in long shots, highly noticeable light trails and a gauze-like effect across many scenes. The sound defaults to a good PCM stereo mix, but while subtly employed the Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 soundtracks offer a much more absorbing atmosphere, the latter in particular providing a real sense of three-dimensional presence. --Gary S Dalkin
