The Petrified Forest was the first film in which Humphrey Bogart received widespread acclaim for his performance as Duke Mantee in Archie Mayo's adaptation of Robert E. Sherwood's Pulitzer prize-winning play. Leslie Howard plays Alan Squier the perfect gentleman in search of meaning in his life. When he lands in a deserted caf'' he finds what he's looking for in the form of Gabby Maple (a young Bette Davis) whose character yearns for the artistic climate of gay Paris. But both Alan and Gabby are in for a bumpy ride when a dangerous gangster Duke Mantee (Bogart) takes over holding up the place at gunpoint. The small group of hostages take turns telling their tales while Duke plots to reunite with his gang and his girl.
