CHILDREN OF THE CORN (1984) Released in 1984, and adapted from a popular Stephen King short story, the original CHILDREN OF THE CORN became one of the most successful of the author's page-to-screen adaptations. Starring a pre-TERMINATOR Linda Hamilton and Peter Horton (TV's THIRTYSOMETHING) as a travelling couple who unwittingly become trapped in the fictional town of Gatlin, Nebraska, and find themselves stalked by a creepy clan of young cultists. No adult is allowed to survive in Gatlin or else, their prophecy predicts, the harvest will collapse. Co-starring popular genre face Courtney Gains (THE 'BURBS) and given a malevolent mid-western touch by director Fritz Kiersch (TUFF TURF), CHILDREN OF THE CORN remains one of the most spine-tingling terror titles of the 1980s. CHILDREN OF THE CORN II: THE FINAL SACRIFICE (1993) Unsurprisingly, this blockbuster bout of bloodshed led to a franchise of fan favourite sequels - although it would take until 1993 for CHILDREN OF THE CORN II: THE FINAL SACRIFICE to rear its rural shocks. Once again set in Nebraska, this frightful follow-up has some members of a nearby town choosing to adopt the surviving adolescents from the previous pot-boiler. Unfortunately for them, a demonic entity out in the cornfields is planning to possess the supposedly sane school-kids so that a new crimson-caked celebration can begin. Featuring some malicious set pieces, and a script co-written by Gilbert Adler (producer of SUPERMAN RETURNS and VALKYRIE), CHILDREN OF THE CORN II: THE FINAL SACRIFICE carves up a thrilling entry into the winning franchise formula. CHILDREN OF THE CORN III: URBAN HARVEST (1995) Also re-mastered in HD for this very special set is CHILDREN OF THE CORN III: URBAN HARVEST (1995), the concluding episode in the series to see the light of a cinema screen. Perhaps the most potent of all the CHILDREN OF THE CORN sequels, this third instalment gave an early role to future Oscar winner Charlize Theron (MONSTER/ MAD MAX: FURY ROAD). With Nebraska cowering in fear at the thought of another child-led slice and dice revolution, two youngsters are adopted and taken to Chicago - where, it would seem, they are safe from any satanic influences! Alas, the opposite is true, and even big city life is revealed to be irrelevant to our clan of pint-sized psychopaths. Another winner, with a slow-burning sense of suspense and plenty of gory thrills and spills, CHILDREN OF THE CORN III: URBAN HARVEST is a spook-fest that more than deserves its BluRay reappraisal.

The ultimate revenge film, Rolling Thunder is one of the quintessential examples of action cinema from the glorious 1970s. After spending eight years in a Vietcong prison camp, Major Charles Rane (William Devane, Marathon Man) returns home to a small town in Texas to be greeted as a hero with a Cadillac convertible and couple thousand dollars in silver coins, one for each day of his imprisonment. Struggling to go back to his former life, Rane faces another ordeal as a gang of thugs set their sights on his cash prize. Now living only for vengeance, he heads to Mexico to exact his own brand of justice on the fleeing crooks. Tommy Lee Jones (JFK, Batman Forever) co-stars as Rane's best friend, Johnny Vohden, who unquestioningly agrees to help Rane in his mission of revenge. This little-seen gem was directed by John Flynn (Lock Up) and co-written by two top screenwriters, Heywood Gould and Paul Schrader. This was Schrader's first produced screenplay after Taxi Driver. The film’s title also was the inspiration for Quentin Tarantino's short lived video/DVD label, Rolling Thunder Pictures.

  • L'Enfance-nue [Masters of Cinema] [1968]L'Enfance-nue | DVD | (22/09/2008) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £22.99

One of the earth-shaking feature debuts in the history of cinema Maurice Pialat's L'Enfance-nue (Naked-Childhood) provides a perspective on growing-up that rejects both sentimentality and modish cynicism. Its unflinching but also warmly accommodating outlook on childhood attracted Fran''ois Truffaut to take on the role as co-producer of Pialat's film - which ironically exists as much as a response to Truffaut's own debut The 400 Blows as that film was to the 'cinema of childhood' that came before the New Wave. First-time actor Michel Tarrazon plays the young Fran''ois a provincial orphan whose destructive behaviour precipitates his relocation from the home of a long-term foster family to the care of a benevolent elderly couple. In the course of this transition Pialat's film presents the turbulence of Fran''ois's unmoored existence and his explosive reactions to the contradictory emotions it engenders. This is the naked portrait of a soul's - and an entire society's - dysfunction before the moment of reconciliation. L'Enfance-nue represents the ideal introduction to the films of Maurice Pialat - an artist whose work resides alongside that of Jean Eustache and Philippe Garrel at the summit of the post-New Wave French cinema. One discovers in his pictures a raw and complicated emotional core which as in the films of John Cassavetes reveals upon closer examination a remarkably rigorous visual aesthetic and a facility of direction which lifts both seasoned actors and debutante amateurs to the level of greatness. Coupled here with Pialat's poetic and brilliant early short L'Amour existe (Love Exists 1960) L'Enfance-nue is the first masterpiece of an artist whose work has had an incalculable influence on contemporary directors as diverse as Bruno Dumont Olivier Assayas Michael Haneke and the Dardenne brothers among others - and whose 2003 passing led Gilles Jacob president of the Festival de Cannes to declare: Pialat is dead and we are all orphaned. French cinema is orphaned.
