  • The Dark Mirror [DVD]The Dark Mirror | DVD | (26/11/2012) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £12.99

The original 1946 The Dark Mirror starred Olivia de Havilland as twin sisters, one of whom has committed a murder. Since each twin can provide an alibi for the other, a rumpled detective (Thomas Mitchell) and a handsome shrink (Lew Ayres) are compelled to get to the truth through patience and not a little sneakiness. Dark Mirror was remade as a TV movie in 1984, this time with Jane Seymour in the 'leads' and Vincent Gardenia as the detective. Seymour has a field day alternating between the good and bad twin; would that the audience was having as much fun. There really isn't any point to this dour remake, except perhaps to honor a contractual commitment to Jane Seymour, whose playing is so ripe that we secretly hope both twins will get the chair.

The boyz are joined by their girl-group counterparts, the Chippettes: Eleanor (Amy Poehler), Jeanette (Anna Faris), and Brittany (Christina Applegate). The grown-up viewer might wish that some of the personality of the actors playing the chipmunks were allowed some room to run, but since the voices are put through the "chipmunk synthesizer," they all pretty much end up sounding the same. Nonetheless, Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked moves along at a brisk pace, with easy chuckles for toddlers and their older siblings, and some in-jokes to keep the parents amused. The plot involves the gang going on a cruise (the first half of the film, in fact, seems like a commercial for Carnival Cruises), but when Alvin is involved, something inevitably goes awry. Soon everyone is marooned on a deserted island and there are adventures and misadventures as they try to be rescued. Along the way, there are references to the Indiana Jones movies, Castaway, Gilligan's Island, and even Lost ("There are 'Others'?"). And of course, it has plenty of chipmunk-singing pop songs--lots of Lady Gaga, for those of you keeping track. Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked is a big bag of popcorn of a family film that younger kids especially will love. --A.T. Hurley

  • The Stranger [1946]The Stranger | DVD | (07/03/2005) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £3.99

The Stranger, according to Orson Welles, "is the worst of my films. There is nothing of me in that picture. I did it to prove that I could put out a movie as well as anyone else." True, set beside Citizen Kane, Touch of Evil, or even The Trial, The Stranger is as close to production-line stuff as the great Orson ever came. But even on autopilot Welles still leaves most filmmakers standing. The shadow of the Second World War hangs heavy over the plot. A war crimes investigator, played by Edward G Robinson, tracks down a senior Nazi, Franz Kindler, to a sleepy New England town where he's living in concealment as a respected college professor. The script, credited to Anthony Veiller but with uncredited input from Welles and John Huston, is riddled with implausibilities: we're asked to believe, for a start, that there'd be no extant photos of a top Nazi leader. The casting's badly skewed, too. Welles wanted Agnes Moorehead as the investigator and Robinson as Kindler, but his producer, Sam Spiegel, wouldn't wear it. So Welles himself plays the supposedly cautious and self-effacing fugitive--and if there was one thing Welles could never play, it was unobtrusive. What's more, Spiegel chopped out most of the two opening reels set in South America, in Welles' view, "the best stuff in the picture". Still, the film's far from a write-off. Welles' eye for stunning visuals rarely deserted him and, aided by Russell Metty's skewed, shadowy photography, The Stranger builds to a doomy grand guignol climax in a clock tower that Hitchcock must surely have recalled when he made Vertigo. And Robinson, dogged in pursuit, is as quietly excellent as ever. On the DVD: not much in the way of extras, except a waffly full-length commentary from Russell Cawthorne that tells us about the history of clock-making and where Edward G was buried, but precious little about the making of the film. Print and sound are acceptable, but though remastering is claimed, there's little evidence of it. --Philip Kemp
