  • Claudio Abbado In Rehearsal [1985]Claudio Abbado In Rehearsal | DVD | (17/05/2002) from £21.58   |  Saving you £-1.59 (N/A%)   |  RRP £19.99

Claudio Abbado in Rehearsal has the eminent conductor rehearsing Verdi's Requiem Mass both at the La Scala Opera House and the church of San Marco in Milan where Verdi's choral masterpiece was first performed. This new performance was given in 1985 to mark the 200th birthday of the Italian national poet Alessandro Manzoni, with whom Verdi shared aspirations for a united Italy. The camera dwells a good deal on Abbado, whose concentration seems well nigh tangible as he raises his arms and throws out his chest to communicate the power of Verdi's music. Abbado takes much care with his soloists, gives strong leads, checking the reverberant acoustic of San Marco with a lift of the head during the thunderous "Dies Irae". We eavesdrop on a piano rehearsal with two of his soloists as he keeps the rather musically wayward mezzo on course and works with Samuel Ramey, his bass, to intensify his hushed delivery of "More stupebit" ("Death and nature stand aghast"). We also see Monserrat Caballe, who can float a note pianissimo like no other soprano, have an unexpected fit of the giggles when beginning her "Libera me". Some reservations in director Norbert Beilharz's treatment of the "Lux Aeterna" require comment. His concept of juxtaposing a well-dressed audience with pictures from tombstones and statues as a reminder of the transience of human life grows wearisome after a while, as does his commentary and translation of the Latin, already on screen as subtitles, which masks some of the most poignant music in the score. On the DVD: Claudio Abbado in Rehearsal has one major disappointment: the lighting. Neither the San Marco Church or the interior of La Scala is well lit. There are brief trailers for three other ArtHaus Musik productions, including a film about Callas and Abbado conducting the Mozart Requiem in a splendid baroque church in Salzburg where the brilliance of the picture, stunningly lit, really shows up the deficiencies of this film. To hear Abbado conduct the Verdi Requiem where everyone performs as though their lives depended on it, try the version he recorded with the Berlin Philharmonic in January 2001. --Adrian Edwards

  • Livietta E Tracollo / La Serva Padrona - Pergolesi [1996]Livietta E Tracollo / La Serva Padrona - Pergolesi | DVD | (05/06/2002) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £24.99

Pergolesi's popular short opera La Serva Padrona and the rarely heard Livietta e Tracollo were written as intermezzi--that is, they were rough-and-ready comic interludes placed between the acts of much more high-toned serious operas. Here they are presented as an intriguing 80-minute double-bill which was recorded live at the Luna Theatre in Brussels in 1996. La Serva Padrona tells the story of a shrewish, scheming maid who marries her master, and Livietta is a farcical romp full of disguise and flirtatious intrigue. Both sound fresh and lively here, with Sigiswald Kuikjen's La Petite Bande doing sterling work in the pit: each "opera buffa" moment is treated with jolly instrumental irreverence, and yet the more sentimental arias (such as the gorgeous "A Serpina penserete" from La Serva Padrona) are given weightier, beautifully phrased support. The acting is fairly wooden and the 18th-century-style productions dull (with just back-cloths for sets), but on a vocal level the casting is great. Nancy Argenta's sound is as limpid as a mountain stream, and Donato di Stefano uses his beguiling bass sonorities with comical leaps and skips. On the DVD: There is a 10-minute interview with Sigiswald Kuikjen about Pergolesi's intermezzi and their context, and there are subtitles in English, German and French. Unfortunately the English translations are unintentionally comic and come a cropper when the Italian gets at all idiomatic: "I will be able to escape of the death", is about as good as it gets. --Warwick Thomson

A staging from the magnificent Teatro San Carlo opera house in Naples sees Leo Nucci formidably cast in the role of the Doge of Venice. The father and son tragedy I Due Foscari premiered in Rome in 1844 has not received as much attention as it deserves. Less opulently orchestrated than some of his preceding operas and with a gloomier story than his other operas it is a jewel in its own right. TDK presents a staging directed by Werner Duggelin one of the most distinguished theatre directors in Europe and choreographed by the superb Heinz Spoerli - both closely associated with the Zurich Opera and Theatre. The story of the conflict between paternal love and the political duties of the Doge of Venice unfolds before a backdrop of the severe facades of classical Venetian architecture symbolising the strict rules that bind the elder Foscari's decisions.

In 1952 a young medical student and a biochemist from Argentina set off on a road trip across South America. As they straddled their beaten up motorcycle the men talked in awed tones of the sights they were about to experience. The record of their trip may have disappeared into the ether if one of the riders departing on that fateful day hadn't been the future insurrectionary figurehead of the Cuban revolution Ernesto Che Guevara (played here by Gael Garcia Bernal). The young Che's companion on the trip was his best friend Alberto Granado (Rodrigo de la Serna) with their simple goals being to enjoy themselves and meet some girls along the way. As the trip unfolds at the behest of their spluttering motorcycle the boys discover more about themselves than they ever imagined possible. Ernesto clings tightly to his ideals throughout and delights in the opportunity to put them into practice. His refusal to spend the provided by his girlfriend Chichina Ferreyra (Mia Maestro) constantly angers his travelling companion as the two succumb to pangs of hunger. Ernesto's charitable nature comes to the fore when he reveals that he gave the money to a pair of out-of-work illegal immigrants. The trip winds down as the friends offer their medical expertise to a leper colony in Peru with the duo's youthful folly acquiescing to adulthood and the dawning realization of where they should head in life.
