While Heavy Metal is often accused of being static and conservative in truth it is a radical form that regularly re-invents itself and one which attracts generation after generation of musicians willing to learn from the past but hungry to evolve the future. And so it was that in the early 1980s a young man called Lars Ulrich was so taken by the New Wave of British Heavy Metal then creating music paper headlines in the UK that he came to England to track down obscure records take them home to LA and with his buddies listen to them - until they came up with a genre of their own soon be termed Thrash Metal. This film is a study and review of this new dawn in rock music and with the aid of those who were there at the time presents both the story of this fascinating musical journey and reassess the sounds the bands the impact and the legacy of Thrash. Contains interviews with members of Metallica Megadeth Machine Head Diamond Head Elixir Neurosis Laaz Rockit Sacrilege BC and others. Performance footage of all the pivotal Thrash bands review and re-assessment from journalists Malcolm Dome Lonn Friend and Joel McIver.
You Got Served has one simple priority, and if you're into the latest hip-hop dance moves, you'll get served an enjoyable 93-minute diversion. For anyone else, however, all bets are off, since this wretchedly plotted film was written by director Christopher B. Stokes as a crassly commercial vehicle for B2K, the teen group that Stokes managed while making cheap movies like this one. There's a tissue-thin romantic subplot, but mostly it's about the MTV-styled showdown between B2K (as Orange County white boys) and their black LA competitors, including members of the hip-hop group IMx. Their aggressive moves are undeniably impressive (in other words, don't try this at home unless you know a good chiropractor), but Stokes would've been better off making a straight documentary. --Jeff Shannon

She can't (and won't) drive 55.... Stephen King's novel about the twisted love affair between a boy and his car gets transferred to the screen, courtesy of suspense master John Carpenter. Although lacking some of the more outré supernatural elements of the source material, this high-octane cinematic tune-up more than delivers the goods, horror-wise (Christine's midnight rampages will never be forgotten)--as well as being a sly exposé of the random cruelties within the high-school pecking order. Keith Gordon (who has gone on to become a stellar director in his own right, with films such as A Midnight Clear and Mother Night to his credit) gives a wonderfully controlled central performance. Carpenter's atmospheric original score is backed up by a well-chosen collection of rock classics, including George Thorogood's "Bad to the Bone" (the titular character's all-too-apt theme song). --Andrew Wright

Death Of A Son opened the fifth season of Screen Two productions on Sunday January 8th 1989 and starred the late Oscar nominated and award winning actress Lynn Redgrave (Georgy Girl The Virgin Soldiers) and Malcolm Storry (Firefox Under Suspicion) as Pauline and Ray Williams. In 1986 Pauline Williams a Luton housewife became the first person in Britain ever to bring a successful private prosecution for manslaughter. The story began in 1982 when John Williams Pauline and Ray's 19 year old son died from an overdose of the drug Palfium. In spite of the inquest jury's verdict of unlawful killing the Director of Public Prosecutions ruled that charges were not to be brought against the drug dealer who injected John with the fatal overdose. Both Pauline and Ray found this ruling impossible to accept and so began a remarkable individual battle. Death Of A Son is the powerful and moving story of what happened to the Williams family; of how Pauline took on the full weight of the British medical and legal establishment - and won. For after three years of campaigning and studying Pauline finally proved to the DPP that there was a case of manslaughter to answer.
