An early success for Russell T. Davies, this peak-time drama series explores the 'upstairs-downstairs' lives of the management, staff and guests of a luxury Manchester hotel in the 1920s. Starring Susan Hampshire, Tim Healy and Mark McGann, The Grand's compelling storylines often encompass the darker side of inter-war life: as poverty and exploitation, covert prostitution and unenlightened attitudes loom large, life is not all it seems behind the hotel's elegant façade New Year's Eve, 1918. Owners John and Sarah Bannerman celebrate the reopening of their refurbished hotel and the return of demobbed son Stephen. But their joy is marred by a crisis that could lose them the hotel and one that can only be resolved with the financial muscle of John's brother, Marcus. Amoral and ruthless to the point of sadistic, with a barely concealed interest in Sarah, Marcus now holds a key stake in the business, making sibling rivalry and conflict inevitable. This complete set contains all eighteen episodes from both series.

Fear can visit us in many forms - perhaps most disturbingly when it stalks us in familiar or cherished surroundings; a suburban house, an idyllic country retreat, or a sunlit Mediterranean holiday villa. Equally, it can haunt us in the shape of a menacing stranger, or gather in the shadows of our own imagination. This volume collects eleven plays in which every character has one thing in common: each has someone, or something, to fear. Shadows of Fear is a suspense anthology with a chilling Hitchcockian touch, featuring some of Britain's most renowned stage and TV performers, including Sheila Hancock, Ronald Hines, Victor Maddern, Edward Fox, Annette Crosbie, Gemma Jones and George Cole. The unsettlingly creepy scripts are provided by Public Eye creator Roger Marshall and award-winning writers Richard Harris, Jeremy Paul and Hugh Leonard, among others.

  • A Fish Called Wanda [1988]A Fish Called Wanda | DVD | (09/08/2005) from £10.98   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £7.99

A Fish Called Wanda was the blockbuster which proved that John Cleese could be a movie star in his own right. Directed by the Veteran Charles Crichton, who made the 1951 Ealing Comedies classic The Lavender Hill Mob, Wanda combined Ealing-comedy capers and Basil Fawlty-esque farce with contemporary big-screen swearing and black comedy. The plot develops in classic film noir style as Cleese's lawyer, Archie Leech, gets sucked into the double-crossing aftermath of a London diamond heist. For sound box-office reasons, British comedies often sport an American star and here Cleese delivers not only Jamie Lee Curtis as a smooth operating femme fatale, but Kevin Kline as her idiotic, and insanely jealous lover (for which he won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar). Pushing the limits of bad taste is Michael Palin's animal-loving Ken, who in the film's best running gag attempts to murder an old lady, only to slay her beloved pet dogs. Other highlights include Palin as a man with two chips up his nose and Cleese showing the world a different sort of "Full Monty". One of the funniest British films ever made, A Fish Called Wanda was followed by Fierce Creatures (1997), which reunited the lead cast and claimed to be an "equal" not a "sequel", but sadly wasn't. --Gary S Dalkin
