  With a tantalising "what-if?" scenario and a respectable cast of Hollywood veterans, The Final Countdown plays like a grand-scale episode of The Twilight Zone. It's really no more than that, and time-travel movies have grown far more sophisticated since this popular 1980 release, but there's still some life remaining in the movie's basic premise: what if a modern-era navy aircraft carrier--in this case the real-life nuclear-powered USS Nimitz--was caught in an anomalous storm and thrust 40 years backwards in time to the eve of Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor? Will the ship's commander (Kirk Douglas) interfere with history? Will the visiting systems analyst (Martin Sheen) convince him not to? Will a rescued senator from 1941 (Charles Durning) play an unexpected role in the future of American politics? Veteran TV director Don Taylor doesn't do much with the ideas posed by this potentially intriguing plot; he seems more interested in satisfying aviation buffs with loving footage of F-14 "Jolly Roger" fighter jets, made possible by the navy's generous cooperation. That makes The Final Countdown a better navy film than a fully fledged time-travel fantasy, but there's a nice little twist at the end, and the plot holes are easy to ignore. James Cameron would've done it better, but this popcorn thriller makes an enjoyable double bill with The Philadelphia Experiment. --Jeff Shannon

  The series formula started to kick in with this immediate sequel to Lethal Weapon, but that doesn't necessarily make it a weak movie. Joe Pesci joins the fold, Richard Donner directs again, and Mel Gibson and Danny Glover return as LAPD partners, their relationship smoother now that Gibson's character has recovered from his maddening grief over his wife's death. But the reckless Mel and cautious Danny equation, good for a million laughs, settles into place in this story involving a South African smuggler and a new girlfriend (Patsy Kensit) for Gibson. The movie is hardly comfy, though. The last act gets nasty, and a climactic fight between Gibson (who gets the worst of it) and some high-kicking villain is ugly. --Tom Keogh

The voice actors Hugh Lawrie, Mark Williams and Barbara Windsor are perfectly cast; the characters are appealing; and the whole tale glows with gentle humour and unashamed sentimentality. It's Christmas Eve and Archie the rabbit, voiced with many a "lumme" and "cripes" by the inimitable Hugh Lawrie, is bored--so bored that he's counting stars. When a present falls from Santa's sleigh as it passes overhead, Archie sees that this is his big chance for adventure: there will be a very disappointed child somewhere if the gift isn't delivered by Christmas morning. So Archie and his friends, Duke the guinea pig (Williams) and Babs the hamster (Windsor), set out to deliver the present to its rightful owner--"three houses past the duckpond, take the second star to the left". Second Star to the Left is an amiable tale about having the courage to try and being able to make a difference--the perfect way to get into the festive mood. After all, if you can't wallow in a bit of unabashed sentimentality at Christmas, when can you? --Helen Baker The main feature is followed by a 10-minute extra consisting of interviews with Barbara Windsor and Graham Ralph, the story's creator.
