Marlene Dietrich, Randolph Scott and John Wayne wrestle with love and greed in this all-star gold rush adventure set in a turn-of-the-century Alaskan boomtown. Dietrich is savvy saloon owner Cherry Malotte, whose honest former beau (Wayne) looks like being swindled out of his claim by no-good town kingpin McNamara (Scott). It's a tale as wild as the frozen north itself, featuring an all-out fight to the finish between western icons Wayne and Scott, which is still considered one of the most spectacular action sequences ever filmed. In 1936 'The Garden Of Allah' was billed as Selznick's showcase for Technicolour. It turned out to be a visually stunning film with vibrant colour realism seldom seen in pictures. Bizarrely the film was not nominated for Best Picture Oscar as the Academy felt that 'its natural beauty would outpoint conventional product'. Now fully restored and digitally re-mastered it still looks wonderful even by today's standards Marlene Dietrich is Domini a young heiress who journeys to t

Marlene is no standard movie star documentary. It is a mystery story a discourse on truth and fiction a battle with a sacred monster a caustic comedy of errors and the story of the making of a film all rolled into one. Despite personally selecting Schell to make the film about her Dietrich soon fell out with the director but rather than be a liability to the film it is its saving grace rescuing it from conventionality and turning it into a unique and richly entertaining record of an encounter with a real-life legend.
For director Josef von Sternberg and Marlene Dietrich it all began with The Blue Angel, one of the masterpieces of Germany's Weimar cinema. This landmark film thrust the sultry and unrestrained Dietrich on an unsuspecting international film audience. She plays the prototypical role of Lola, the singer who tempts repressed professor Emil Jannings (the king of expressionist actors) into complete submission night after night at the Blue Angel night-club. The film perfectly captures the masochism and degradation of the Weimar Republic, just before the rise of Adolf Hitler. And yet the moral confusion exhibited by Jannings is really due to his own torment. Dietrich is merely an instrument of his innermost desires, standing on stage in top hat, stockings and bare thighs singing "Falling in Love Again". --Bill Desowitz, Amazon.com
