  The second series of The Sopranos, David Chase's ultra-cool and ultra-modern take on New Jersey gangster life, matches the brilliance of the first, although it's marginally less violent, with more emphasis given to the stories and obsessions of supporting characters. Sadly, the programme makers were forced to throttle back on the appalling struggle between gang boss Tony Soprano and his Gorgon-like Mother Livia, the very stuff of Greek theatre, following actress Nancy Marchand's unsuccessful battle against cancer. Taking up her slack, however, is Tony's big sister Janice, a New Age victim and arrant schemer and sponger, who takes up with the twitchy, Scarface-wannabe Richie Aprile, brother of former boss Jackie, out of prison and a minor pain in Tony's ass. Other running sub-plots include soldier Chris (Michael Imperioli) hapless efforts to sell his real-life Mafia story to Hollywood, the return and treachery of Big Pussy and Tony's wife Carmela's ruthlessness in placing daughter Meadow in the right college. Even with the action so dispersed, however, James Gandofini is still toweringly dominant as Tony. The genius of his performance, and of the programme makers, is that, despite Tony being a whoring, unscrupulous, sexist boor, a crime boss and a murderer, we somehow end up feeling and rooting for him, because he's also a family man with a bratty brood to feed, who's getting his balls busted on all sides, to say nothing of keeping the Government off his back. He's the kind of crime boss we'd like to feel we would be. Tony's decent Italian-American therapist Dr Melfi's (Loraine Bracco) perverse attraction with her gangster-patient reflects our own and, in her case, causes her to lose her first series cool and turn to drink this time around. Effortlessly multi-dimensional, funny and frightening, devoid of the sentimentality that afflicts even great American TV like The West Wing, The Sopranos is boss of bosses in its televisual era. --David Stubbs

  One of the reasons that the Spice Girls remain so much fun is that in the great British tradition, they don't take themselves too seriously. Like The Beatles before them, the girls are more than happy to take pot-shots at their own manufactured image, something that Spiceworld: The Movie revels in. It doesn't hurt, of course, that plenty of others are along for the ride: Richard E. Grant chews scenery as the road manager; Meat Loaf is the kindly, ever-reliable bus driver; Elvis Costello (!) makes a tongue-in-cheek cameo; and Roger Moore is... well, bizarre. The plot, as such, is merely a convenience, somehow tying together the girls' first-ever live concert, a pregnant friend, a documentary film crew, a non-Spice love story, and something or other about a tabloid photographer. But that's not the point--what matters here is a surprisingly deft touch by director Bob Spiers and a script that refuses to take anything too seriously; the result is a gentle self-parody that knows just how far to take the joke. --Randy Silver

This speculative and fictional thriller suggests that Palme was the victim of a right-wing conspiracy, with even the Americans tacitly and indirectly involved, worried as they were about Palme's ambitions to turn Scandinavia into a nuclear-free zone. Mikael Persbrandt plays Roger Nyman, a Swedish police officer transferred to the Fraud Squad who discovers that an assassin responsible for a killing in Johannesburg is now contracted to kill Palme. However, his superiors take him off the case when he presents them with his findings and tries to follow up the case alone. Fearful, isolated, enraged and increasingly estranged from his family, he contrasts sharply with Michael Kitchen's suave but coolly lethal British contract killer. Though Palme's fate is foreknown, The Last Contract nonetheless succeeds in pulling you into its maelstrom of intrigue until virtually the final frame. --David Stubbs

The Pallbearer is the umpteenth variation on the Oedipal conflicts made famous in Mike Nichols's The Graduate, but it doesn't have the imagination, vitality, or authority to take classic themes about growing up all the way to the finish line. But in its brooding, comic way, The Pallbearer is honest about the difficulties of crossing the line into adulthood when one doesn't know how. --Tom Keogh

The client (Louis Di Bianco) pressures the Brits to get the job done, while the real hitmen figure out they've been supplanted. It all makes for an enjoyable (and violent) lark, but an interesting angle finds Wahlberg's soft-spoken criminal anxious to get out of his trade (he falls for Postlethwaite's gorgeous daughter, played by Claire Forlani) while Morrissey becomes increasingly convincing as a gangster. --Tom Keogh
