This John Irvin film is a small, hard-edged little gem, full of crisp action and tough-minded codes of honour. Harvey Keitel stars as a retired professional criminal whose younger brother (Timothy Hutton) lures him to Los Angeles for a can't-miss heist in Palm Springs. But Hutton hasn't picked his other partners very well, particularly wheelman Stephen Dorff: when it's time to divvy up the spoils, Dorff kills Hutton and a fourth partner and tries to rub out Keitel. Keitel escapes, however, and trails Dorff back to L.A., where he also figures out which Chinese mob he's tied in with. It's strictly revenge time from there on out, with Keitel as the one-man wrecking crew cutting a bloody swathe through the L.A. underworld. Keitel is grittily good, a man of few words and many bullets, while Dorff is an enjoyably sleazy psychopath. A violently propulsive little film noir. --Marshall Fine, Amazon.com

Even if all written and documentary evidence were to disappear, you could still get a real insight into Britain's involvement in the Second World War through feature films such as Above Us the Waves (1955) and In Which We Serve (1942). Directed by Ralph Thomas, Above Us the Waves tells of a Royal Navy mission to sink the "invincible" German battleship Tirpitz off the Norwegian coast. John Mills is calm and confident as the mission commander, with strong support from John Gregson and Donald Sinden--all treated by the German personnel as fellow gentlemen when captured. Despite stirring music from Arthur Benjamin, the action sequences are visually no more than adequate, and the film is only a partial success compared with the naval and domestic drama of the earlier In Which We Serve. Noël Coward wrote the screenplay and musical score, co-directed (with David Lean) and gave possibly his finest screen performance as the commander of HMS Torrin. His speech to the survivors of the sunken ship, as they prepare for reassignment, is just the highlight of a film packed with memorable visuals and perceptive dialogue. On the DVD: Though there are no additional features the black-and-white prints have come up excellently in the 4:3 video aspect ratio. There are 15 access points for each film, though the lack of subtitles is an unfortunate omission. These are period pieces that capture the mood of an era.--Richard Whitehouse

Widely heralded as one of the greatest serial killer movies of all time, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer presents a bleak and unflinching dive into the mind of a mass murderer. Recently released from prison, the nomadic Henry (Michael Rooker, Guardians of the Galaxy, The Walking Dead) finds temporary abode in the rundown Chicago lodgings of a former jail acquaintance and small-time drug dealer, Otis (Tom Towles). Hiding behind his unremarkable employment as a pest exterminator, Henry leads a double life, prowling the streets by night on a brutal and apparently motiveless killing spree. As the bodies mount up, Otis finds himself inducted into Henry's dark secret world, but when Otis' sister Becky (Tracy Arnold) moves in, herself fleeing from an uncomfortable domestic situation, it quickly becomes apparent that two's company, but three's a crowd. Based on the horrific true-life crimes of Henry Lee Lucas, the harrowing controversial debut feature from John McNaughton (Mad Dog and Glory, Wild Things) returns to the UK in its best-looking release ever, in a new 4K restoration supervised by the director himself. Painstaking care has been taken to bring Voltron up to modern video standards. Unlike many of the earlier classic 80's cartoon releases Voltron required a different level of restoration work. The show was pieced together from two different Japanese series. Normally the video cleaning process involves going back to the original prints but in this case they simply didn't exist. Starting with new film transfers from Hyaku Juu Oh Golion and Kik'' Kantai Dairugger XV we rebuilt Voltron from the ground up! All of the original footage was color-corrected and given a full revival to remove the imperfections on film. Once the pieces were in place it was time to edit...edit...and edit some more. Every episode now had to be re-created using the originals as guides. So frame by frame and scene by scene Voltron was reborn into existence once more. The video crew of AnimeWorks has taken the greatest of care to revive this classic series that introduced so many of us to Anime. From the far reaches of the galaxy comes the legend of the Lion Force five great weapons that connect to form Voltron a mighty robot dedicated to defending the universe. Meanwhile on planet Earth a Galaxy Alliance maintains peace amongst the planets but a horrible menace threatens that peace and Voltron is needed once again. A super force of space explorers must venture deep into space and resurrect Voltron Defender of the Universe. This fantastic Limited Edition 3-disc embossed Steelbook; contains the first 15 episodes and is a must for fans old and new.
