The second of Francis Ford Coppola's films based on the popular juvenile novels of S.E. Hinton (the first being The Outsiders), Rumble Fish split critics into opposite camps: those who admired the film for its heavily stylised indulgence, and those who hated it for the very same reason. Whatever the response, it's clearly the work of a maverick director who isn't afraid to push the limits of his innovative talent. Filmed almost entirely in black and white with an occasional dash of color for symbolic effect, this tale of alienated youth centers on gang leader Rusty James (Matt Dillon) and his band of punk pals. Rusty's got a girlfriend (Diane Lane), an older brother named Motorcycle Boy (Mickey Rourke), and a drunken father (Dennis Hopper) who've all given up trying to straighten him out. He's best at making trouble, and he pursues that skill with an enthusiastic flair that eventually catches up with him. But it's not the whacked-out story here that matters--it's the uninhibited verve of Coppola's visual approach, which includes everything from time-lapse clouds to the kind of smoky streets and alleyways that could only exist in the movies. The supporting cast includes a host of fresh faces who went on to thriving careers, including Nicolas Cage, Christopher Penn, Vincent Spano, Laurence Fishburne, and musician Tom Waits. --Jeff Shannon

The narration by "Big Kahuna Brown" cuts through the reverence a bit, being cheeky in tone. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

The film that established Terry Gilliam as more than just Monty Python’s resident animator this delightfully inventive children’s fantasy is about young Kevin (Craig Warnock) who finds himself travelling through holes in the space-time continuum in the company of half a dozen fractious dwarfs. Along the way he encounters Agamemnon (Sean Connery) Robin Hood (John Cleese) Napoleon (Ian Holm) and winds up as a passenger on the Titanic although not necessarily in that order. But is this just random entertainment laid on for history fan Kevin’s benefit or part of a wider struggle between the forces of good (Ralph Richardson) and evil (David Warner)? At the time this was a rare example of a small-budget British film successfully taking on American blockbusters. Now it's a much-loved fantasy classic bursting with inspired images and ideas: Gilliam and co-writer Michael Palin (who also appears) are clearly enjoying themselves as much as their audience. Packed with nearly 8 hours of action from England's 2012 summer of cricket. England went into the 2012 summer ranked the world's best Test team and aiming for top spot in the One-Day game. In their way stood Test and ODI series against an emerging West Indies side and the mighty South Africa, plus a One-Day series against the old enemy, Australia. The summer began with Andrew Strauss back in the runs and wickets for Stuart Broad. Darren Sammy and Marlon Samuels starred for the Windies, and there was an incredible world record innings at number 11 by Tino Best. Then, under Alastair Cook, the One-Day side were far too good for Australia as England eased to a comprehensive series victory. But the biggest challenge was still to come... Kevin Pietersen's scintillating 149 and an exciting 95 from Jonathan Bairstow gave England hope against South Africa but they were up against a side at the very top of their game, with Hashim Amla in sensational form. The home side went to the final match at Lord's desperately trying to cling on to top spot, a struggle which came down to a thrilling last day of the series... It was to be Strauss's last match as he announced his retirement from the game. But the One-Day side ended the summer on a high. An even contest against South Africa saw England end 2012 as the number one side in the world.
