Sleepwalk with Me tells the story of comedian-turned-playwright-turned-filmmaker Mike Birbiglia in his autobiographically inspired fictional feature debut. Birbiglia wears his incisive wit on hissleeve while portraying a cinematic surrogate. We are thrust into the tale of a burgeoning stand-up comedian struggling with the stress of a stalled career a stale relationship threatening to race out of his control and the wild spurts of severe sleep- walking he is desperate to ignore. Based on the successful one-man show Sleepwalk With Me engages in the kind of passionate and personal storytelling that transfigures intimate anguish into comic art.
If you don't think Austin Powers is one of the funniest movies of the 1990s, maybe you should be packed into a cryogenic time chamber and sent back to the decade whence you came. Perhaps it was the 1960s--the shagadelic decade when London hipster Austin Powers scored with gorgeous chicks as a fashion photographer by day, crime-fighting international man of mystery by night. Yeah, baby, yeah! But when Powers' arch nemesis, Dr Evil, puts himself into a deep-freeze and travels via time machine to the late 1990s, Powers must follow him and foil Evil's nefarious scheme of global domination. Mike Myers plays dual roles as Powers and Dr Evil, with Elizabeth Hurley as his present-day sidekick and karate-kicking paramour. A hilarious spoof of 60s spy movies, this colourful comedy actually gets funnier with successive viewings, making it a perfect home video for gloomy days and randy nights. The unexpected casting of Tony Curtis as the presumed Boston Strangler, Albert DeSalvo, is only the first of the attractions of this hard-nosed suspense picture. Although the style of The Boston Strangler looks dated today, with its split-screen experiments and post-Bonnie and Clyde permissiveness, the film still has the clean, strong lines of a methodical policier. For the first hour, we don't focus on the Strangler, instead following the Beantown cops (led by Henry Fonda) as they track down leads; the best sequence is the near-accidental connection made between burglary suspect DeSalvo and the killings. Director Richard Fleischer had a forceful hand with true-crime material (Compulsion, 10 Rillington Place) and he takes an unblinking look into the then-taboo subject of sexual pathology. Curtis's physical transformation into a dumpy, dull-eyed brute is the best aspect of his performance; it's a role he lobbied hard for, but it did not lead to more challenging work. --Robert Horton

The breakthrough feature of experimental filmmaker Gregg Araki, The Living End also marked a seminal moment in the New Queer Cinema movement of the 1990s. A startling synthesis of thriller, love story, comedy and road movie, it's a consciously political and uncompromising work that confronts mainstream America's fear of AIDs. Luke (Mike Dytri) is a rootless hustler who's determined to live fast, die young, and make a beautiful corpse, while Jon (Craig Gilmore) is a freelance writer whose life and stability are devastated when he finds out he's HIV positive. They meet by chance (or is it fate?), and when Luke kills a cop, they take to the road, embarking on a wild odyssey with devastating consequences. Peppered with film references, specifically to other movies featuring couples on the run and powered by a soundtrack heavy on industrial music, The Living End is propelled by rage and indignation.
Sheryl Crow fans looking for a straightforward concert video can't go wrong with this 83-minute set, recorded in Detroit during the Globe Sessions tour of early 1999. Appearing in black leather pants and a black string-strap top, Cheryl is poised and professional, driving through 15 songs (nine from The Globe Sessions) with studio-set precision, despite the handicap of a receptive but oddly lifeless audience. (Perhaps the Motor City was merely idling that night.) Moving from acoustic guitar to bass, electric guitar, harmonica (on "It Don't Hurt"), and finally piano (for an exquisite rendition of "Home"), the Grammy winner makes it clear that she's as musically skilled as she is drop-dead gorgeous. Accompanied by a flawless six-piece band (with honorable mentions to guitarist Peter Stroud and violinist Lorenza Ponce), Crow rocks when it's time to rock (the climactic jam on "Riverwide" and "If It Makes You Happy" being standouts), but her strength remains in the more delicate passages of "Am I Getting Through", "The Kind", "Stong Enough", and the aforementioned "Home", an encore visually enhanced by rural images projected on an upstage scrim. Crow dedicates the set-closing rocker "Mississippi" to Bob Dylan, and even if a few favoured hits are not included, this remains a noteworthy performance. Camera coverage is slick and editing tight, and while VHS viewers will likely be satisfied, the DTS DVD is mildly problematic, failing to achieve the "you-are-there" dynamics that videophiles have a right to expect. Fortunately, the concert itself is not compromised; the recording is crisp and carefully mixed. Crow no doubt had more lively gigs during this particular tour, but with an accommodating stage and a first-rate band in good spirits, this was a pretty good night to have the cameras around. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com
Full of verve and wit Shrek is a computer-animated adaptation of William Steig's delightfully fractured fairy tale. Our title character (voiced by Mike Myers) is an agreeable enough ogre who wants to live his days in peace. When the diminutive Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow) evicts local fairy tale creatures (including the now-famous Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio and the Gingerbread Man), they settle in the ogre's swamp and Shrek wants answers from Farquaad. A quest of sorts starts for Shrek and his new pal, a talking donkey (Eddie Murphy), where battles have to be won and a princess (Cameron Diaz) must be rescued from a dragon lair in a thrilling action sequence. The story is stronger than most animated fare but it's the jokes that make Shrek a winner. The PG rating is stretched when Murphy and Myers hit their strides. The mild potty humour is fun enough for the 10-year-old but will never embarrass their parents. Shrek is never as warm and inspired as the Toy Story films, but the realistic computer animation and a rollicking soundtrack keeps the entertainment in fine form. Produced by DreamWorks, the film also takes several delicious stabs at its cross-town rival, Disney. --Doug Thomas, Amazon.com On the DVD: DVD could have been invented to showcase Shrek's stunning computer animation--admirably served here by 16:9 anamorphic widescreen presentation--while the exuberant soundtrack comes alive in 5.1 Dolby Digital. There are plenty of extras to choose from on this DVD, from The Tech of Shrek and fake Character Interviews to the amusing Swamp Karaoke Dance Party featuring the whole cast. However, none of these features have much depth, nor do they last long and it would be easy to feel slightly disappointed--were it not for the excellent Shrek's ReVoice Studio. This first-of-its-kind feature requires a computer running Microsoft Windows 98SE or higher, Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher, an Internet connection and a DVD-ROM drive. However, once the DVD-ROM is up and running, the instructions could not be clearer and within minutes the whole family will be dubbing their voices over favourite characters and scenes--rendering the other extras almost irrelevant.--Helen Baker
