So when they fall in love the differences between them (he drives a BMW and she's ashamed of where she lives) bring barriers to their romance. Some Kind of Wonderful: Think everyone over 17 has forgotten what it's like to be 16? Filmmaker John Hughes hasn't. Here Hughes delivers another funny savvy crowd-pleasing look at adolesence in this story about high-school misfit Eric Stoltz who falls so head-over-heels for the senior class siren that he's blind to the charms of his beautiful and devoted best pal Mary Stuart Masterson. Some fun some heartache 'Some Kind Of Wonder Terms Of Endearment: This Oscar-winning film is both eccentrically funny and an old-fashioned tearjerker. The story centers around the volatile relationship between a mother and daughter spanning 30 years. The various permutations of their lives are examined including the daughter's bout with terminal cancer.

  • Analyze This [1999]Analyze This | DVD | (03/04/2000) from £4.55   |  Saving you £9.44 (207.47%)   |  RRP £13.99

Cast Robert De Niro and Billy Crystal together in a film and it should be a sucker's bet as to who's going to be funnier and who's going to give the more nuanced performance. Somehow, though, De Niro walks away with most of the laughs, mugging gleefully through Analyze This, a buddy action-comedy about a mob boss (De Niro, naturally) suffering from panic attacks who makes a shrink (Crystal, naturally) an offer he can't refuse--actually, it's not really an offer, it's a command. The good doctor is forced to help the gangster get in touch with his feelings. Had the brilliant TV series The Sopranos not underscored how thin and formulaic director-cowriter Harold Ramis's approach to such potentially rich material actually is, the movie--a hit in cinemas (and De Niro's biggest film ever)--would seem more fresh. De Niro is definitely a hoot as the ever milder menace and Crystal actually concentrates on giving a credible performance opposite the acting legend (alas, he doesn't turn his character's fear of his patient into inspired comedy, as Alan Arkin did in Grosse Pointe Blank). The conclusion devolves into the requisite gunplay and Chazz Palminteri and Lisa Kudrow are criminally wasted as an opposing mob boss and Crystal's fiancée, respectively, but overall, Analyze This is breezy fun. --David Kronke

Merchant-Ivory leave heaving corsets behind for the contemporary world of Americans in Paris in Le Divorce. The day Isabel Walker (Kate Hudson) comes to visit her pregnant sister Roxy (Naomi Watts) is the day Roxy's French husband leaves her. The divorce proceedings centre around a painting, long owned by the Walkers, that the husband's family would like to claim--but their manoeuvrings are complicated when Isabel begins an affair with a diplomat (Thierry Lhermitte) who just happens to be Roxy's uncle-in-law. At its best moments, Le Divorce has the feel of one of Woody Allen's serio-comic films like Hannah and Her Sisters, and there's a genuinely suspenseful climactic scene on the Eiffel Tower. There's also a star-studded supporting cast, including Leslie Caron, Glenn Close, Matthew Modine, Stephen Fry, Sam Waterston and Stockard Channing. --Bret Fetzer

Before the internet before reality TV what television series could be more humorous and with more vision than It's Garry Shandling's Show. In 1986 Garry Shandling was poised to become a permanent guest host on Johnny Carson's The Tonight Show. Instead he took a chance of an offer from fledgling network Showtime to create his own television series. The show was a surreal look at the daily life of a young single man who is a comedian. It's Garry Shandling's Show was not a typical sitcom. Shandling would break the 'fourth wall' to include the studio audience and the viewers at home in on the actual making of the show. Experimenting with the sitcom form meant inviting the audience onto the set playing with the passage of time (it's now two weeks later) and generally exploding the genre and making art of the debris. Teaming up with Saturday Night Lives Alan Zweibel Shandling 'put on a fourth grade play' every week for four seasons. With a crew of talented young writers including Tom Gammill. Max Pross Al Jean Michael Reiss and David Mirkin who would go onto to Seinfield and The Simpsons and Ed Solomon who wrote Men In Black television history was made. Over the years guest stars (playing themselves) included Tom Petty Rob Reiner Vanna White Red Buttons Dan Akroyd Martin Mull Gilda Radner (in her last TV performance) Carl Reiner Chevy Chase Jeff Goldblum Don Cornelius The Turtles and many more. From its unforgettable theme song to its closing credits It's Garry Shandling's Show was award winning mind bending television for 4 seasons and its influence is clearly seen in the best TV comedies through the decades to follow Enjoy all 16 episodes from the first of four seasons of this much loved classic now on DVD.
