| RRP Though it seems dated now, Bus Stop was considered pretty hot stuff in 1956. Directed by Joshua Logan from George Axelrod's script of William Inge's comic-romantic Broadway hit, the film stars Marilyn Monroe as the kind of woman who can't understand why she always brings out the worst in men. She attracts the attention of a young rodeo rider (Don Murray) while on a bus, and finds herself trapped at a bus stop in the middle of nowhere during a blizzard. The young cowboy, whose intentions are honourable, can't control his temper and can't understand why this experienced woman won't take him seriously--and why she rejects him when he begins acting jealous and possessive. Love takes its lumps but comes out slugging in the end, with Marilyn at her vulnerable, jaded best. --Marshall Fine, Amazon.com

Dawson's Creek: Season 2 | DVD | (05/04/2004)
from £32.37
| Saving you £12.62 (28.10%)
| RRP The second series of Dawson's Creek finds Dawson (James Van Der Beek) and Joey (Katie Holmes) exploring the newest phase of their lifelong friendship, leaving Jen (Michelle Williams) and Pacey (Joshua Jackson) on the outside. The former enters a downward spiral assisted by bad girl Abby (Monica Keena), but Pacey happens into a "meet cute" with one of Capeside's new residents, the impossibly perky Andie (Meredith Monroe), who turns out to be his perfect foil. The Creek also struck gold with its second major addition, Andie's brother Jack (Kerr Smith), who shows Joey that he's more than just a clumsy waiter. With the siblings' help, Pacey and Joey show the most personal growth during the season's 22 episodes. The constant parent-child crises can be a bit much, but there were numerous other developments, including a two-part sexual whodunnit, Dawson embarking on his second movie (assisted by Rachael Leigh Cook in a sizzling guest appearance), Dawson's birthday party from hell, a vicious rumour that spreads through the high school, and the emotion-wringing finale. The only bonus feature is a commentary track on the first and last episodes just as with the first season, though executive producer Paul Stupin is by himself rather than accompanied by creator Kevin Williamson. The interplay is missed, but Stupin enthusiastically offers a lot of information about how the cast had become celebrities by the second season and had to juggle other projects and random details and trivia. Stupin mentions how carefully he selected different pieces of music, which "would become forever part of our show." That's ironic because for this DVD set Stupin himself picked a lot of new music to replace the selections that originally aired, presumably because of the cost involved in securing the rights (a problem for many television DVD releases). A couple of episodes are unaltered, but others have had almost every song replaced. Newcomers to the series probably won't notice, but serious fans may want not want to tape over their video cassettes just yet. --David Horiuchi

| RRP With the bloodiest battle in American history finally ending, an embattled soldier haunted by the demons of combat, finds himself embroiled in a conflict between two Southern clans. Escaping the horrors witnessed during the Civil War, Wade (James Badge Dale, Iron Man 3, The Walk, The Lone Ranger) returns home to his only surviving relatives in rural Texas. Trapping animals for their pelts to make a meagre living, his family live in fear of the brutish neighbouring cattle-ranching McCluskey's. Upon making this discovery, Wade takes it upon himself to protect his family and put an end to the McCluskey's reign of terror. However, before long, the rivalry escalates into a war much closer to home; a struggle, this time, of his own making. From the award-winning filmmaker Kane Senes, and starring Maika Monroe (Labor Day, Independence Day: Resurgence, The Bling Ring), William Forsythe (The Rock, Boardwalk Empire) and Ethan Embry (Once Upon a Time, Eagle Eye) comes this gritty Western tale of how far one man will go to stand up for what is right.
The 41-Year-Old Virgin Who Knocked Up Sarah Marshall and Felt Superbad About It | DVD | (16/05/2011)
from £6.32
| Saving you £9.67 (153.01%)
| RRP This disjointed comedy spoofs four Judd Apatow efforts: The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and Superbad (Apatow directed two and produced the other two). It gets off to an awkward start when Andy (MadTV's Bryan Callen), a middle-aged comedian, has a nightmare in which his hairy chest horrifies his topless date. The rest of the movie continues along the same vein--more disgusting moments, more underdressed women. As it turns out, Andy's housemates, Michael (Steven Nicholas) and Jonah (Steven Sims, best of the lot), also plan to lose their virginity in the days to come. All three hang out with characters who recall Seth Rogen, Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Superbad's McLovin), the "Can you hear me now?" guy, and a black Benjamin Button, who ages in reverse (and dresses like Samuel L. Jackson). While the teens try to track down booze for a party, Andy meets Kim (Noureen DeWulf), who has to break their date when she gets a job in Hawaii, and Sarah (Mircea Monroe), who loses control of her bodily functions when she drinks too much. Then one of the ladies gets pregnant, and everyone ends up in Maui, where complications, naturally, ensue. Along with the Apatow-inspired situations, co-writer-director Craig Moss (Saving Ryan's Privates) spoofs American Pie, Twilight, Slumdog Millionaire, and There Will Be Blood, but The 41-Year-Old Virgin feels more like a series of sketches than a full-fledged feature, the gross-out humour gets old fast, and Moss squanders all the sweetness of Apatow's best work. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

| RRP Alfred Hitchcock famously observed that movies should be more than just picture postcards of people talking. Sometimes, though, dialogue is all that's needed. Joseph L. Mankiewicz's immaculately scripted All About Eve is a case in point. There are no special effects (unless one considers Marilyn Monroe's wiggle or a scene in which a car breaks down). What the movie offers instead is some of the most coruscating one-liners ever committed to celluloid. The top-name cast certainly know how to put Mankiewicz's words across. Anne Baxter is all doe-eyed charm as Eve, the ruthless aspiring actress who passes herself off as a little girl lost. George Sanders (eminent character actor and the voice of Shere Khan the tiger in The Jungle Book) shows his customary mellowness of sneer as Addison De Witt, theatre critic and professional cynic ("a venomous foot louse" as he's characterised) who helps push Eve up the greasy pole toward success, if not happiness. Best of all is Bette Davis, a soured but still resplendent stage diva, who takes Eve under her wing. ("I'll admit I've seen better days but I'm still not to be had for the price of a cocktail--like a salted peanut", she tells her lover.) The plotting and double-dealing on the screen, described in Sam Staggs' All About All About Eve: The Complete Behind-the-Scenes Story of the Bitchiest Film Ever Made, were matched by what went on behind the scenes. Davis heartily loathed fellow actress Celeste Holm who--ironically enough--plays her best friend. She fell in love with another co-star, the handsome, good-looking Gary Merrill, whom she later married. Backstage dramas are often self-indulgent and stagy affairs, but this one dazzles. --Geoffrey Macnab
