  • The Tango Lesson [1997]The Tango Lesson | DVD | (25/06/2001) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £19.99

Sally Potter's self-reflective film stars Potter (an actress and the director of Orlando), more or less as herself, learning to tango from master-dancer Pablo Veron and considering making a film called The Tango Lesson. The film that we happen to be watching, however, is concerned largely with the delicious conflict between the politics of tango--the need for one partner, typically the woman, to yield to the other--and the expectations of the film-maker to do things on her own terms. Can Potter simultaneously surrender and control for the duration of this circular project? The question is made more complicated by Veron's desire to be in one of Potter's films--in other words, to follow her lead. Potter may not be Veron's equal on the dance floor, but that isn't the point of this interesting movie and its provocative, internal debate. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

There's a sucker born every minute. Director Miguel Bardem (Javier Bardem's brother) delivers a stylish Grifters-style crime thriller that would not only make David Mamet proud - it would have him second-guessing the plot twists right down to the final frame. The slick handsome Ernesto (Ernesto Alterio) has spent a lifetime in the small-racket crime world working the three-card monte on suckers on the streets of Madrid conning store owners and scouting the train stations for easy marks to rob. His pleasant but decidedly small-time lifestyle changes when he meets the elderly El Manco (Manuel Alexandre) a veteran of the trade who has close contacts to the mysterious and masterful Federico (Federico Luppi) the king of all con men. The three hook up and after ascending to the rarified world of elegant hotels and high living Federico proposes a real estate con that will net them millions. The only hitch is that they need the assistance of Federico's ex-lover Pilar (Victoria Abril). A former con artist herself Pilar (who cheated Federico on a scam years earlier) is now living in luxury with her new elderly husband. The chase is on as the team embarks on their new complicated con . . . but can everyone be trusted? Swindled is an elegant fun fast-moving film where the secrets treachery and twists will keep you on the edge of your seat until the final frame.

  • Anger Management / As Good As It Gets [2003]Anger Management / As Good As It Gets | DVD | (17/11/2003) from £13.56   |  Saving you £11.43 (84.29%)   |  RRP £24.99

The irresistible pairing of Jack Nicholson and Adam Sandler is the best reason to see Anger Management, a comedy that might have been subtitled "The Funny and the Furious". Nicholson and especially Sandler have screen personas that partially rely on pent-up anxieties, so there's definite potential in teaming them as a mild-mannered designer of pet clothing for chubby cats (Sandler) who's been ordered to undergo anger management therapy with a zany counsellor (Nicholson) prone to occasional tantrums and devious manipulation. Surely this meandering comedy looked better on the page; director Peter Segal scores a few lucky scenes (particularly Sandler's encounter with a Buddhist monk, played by John C Reilly), but a flood of cameos (Heather Graham, Woody Harrelson, Rudolph Giuliani, and others) can't match the number of laughs that fall flat. As Sandler's understanding girlfriend, Marisa Tomei plays a pivotal role in a happy ending that leaves everyone smiling, with the possible exception of the audience. --Jeff Shannon
