"Actor: Nana Patekar"

  • Salaam Bombay! [1988]Salaam Bombay! | DVD | (16/06/2003) from £20.97   |  Saving you £-7.99 (N/A%)   |  RRP £9.99

Meera Nair's Salaam Bombay was her first film, and one of only three Indian films nominated for an Oscar (the others being Mother India and Lagaan). The deceptively simple documentary style hides a meticulously planned feature in which nothing is left to chance. Real street kids play the leads alongside veteran actors, such as Nana Patekar and Shaukat Azmi, as we follow Chaipau, the urchin who wants to save his 500 rupees to "go home", and his encounters with prostitutes, thugs and drug addicts among whom he finds love and companionship. The story avoids sentimentality by endowing the characters with humanity while never romanticising their plight. Nair eschews the obvious "city of contrasts" theme, presenting only the view from the street, shooting in real locations of Grant Road and its environs. This is one of the greatest presentations of Bombay to date, comparable across genres to Raghu Rai's photography or Vikram Chandra's fiction. On the DVD: Salaam Bombay on DVD includes a compelling scene-by-scene commentary, in which Nair discusses the problems of location shooting, training the children and the impact of the film on the lives of so many of its characters. The film is in Hindi with English subtitles. --Rachel Dwyer

The Pool is the story of Venkatesh, a bus boy working at a hotel in Panjim, Goa, who sees from his perch in a mango tree a luxuriant garden and shimmering pool hidden behind a wall. In making whatever efforts he can to better himself, Venkatesh offers his services to the wealthy owner of the home. Not content to simply dream about a different life, Venkatesh is inquisitive about the home's inhabitants-indeed about the world around him-and his curiosity changes the shape of his future. Remarkably cogent and affecting, this is inspired storytelling distinctive for its ability to transmit a complete viewpoint in just a phrase or brief conversation. In the same vein as his latest documentary, Smith's creative acumen focuses on the gulf between the rich and poor, sharing its insights, observations, poignancy, and truth in a deceptively simple narrative. Working in Hindi with young actors and in a country obviously not his own, Smith has nevertheless created a superbly incisive portrait that will move and delight you. Special Features: A'Making Of' feature

The voice of today.......... AAJ KI AWAZ. When violence reigns lawlessness prevails; this is the cry of today which we hear night and day. But in the deafening noise of violence and anarchy there is also a gentler but challenging voice which refuses to remain silent and let evil prevail. Such a voice is that of Prof. Prabhat Varma (Raj Babbar) a poet and a professor of Sanskrit who comes to Bombay and finds himself unwittingly drawn into the vortex of lawlessness and violence. In trying to raise his voice of protest he draws on himself the violent reaction of the under world gangs one of which tries to teach him a lesson by brutally raping his sister and killing his mother. Knowing about the inadequacy of law that seeks evidence as a precondition of justice Prabhat launches a one-man crusade against all evildoers - and in the process becomes an avenging angel destroying all those who perpetrate terrorism and death on peace loving citizens. When his mission to bring peace to the terrorized and tormented public was accomplished he decides to surrender himself to the police so that he is able to face the court and defend himself. His main aim is to tell the court that whatever he did it was not to take law in his own hands but to protect law from those who broke it. Advocate Rajani (Smita Patil) strives along with him in this struggle. Will they succeed in proving his innocence to the law? Hasan Kamal won the 'Best Lyricist' Film Fare award award for his heart stirring lyrics in this film.
