Winner of the City of Melbourne Award for Best Short Documentary at the Melbourne International Film Festival (in 2000) Carol Morley's highly acclaimed documentary 'The Alcohol Years' is a courageous moving and often funny account of five self-destructive years of her life in early 1980s Manchester. Also included on this release are the titles 'Stalin My Neighbour' and 'Everyday Something'. Almost 20 years after leaving it behind Carol Morley returned to Manchester where she had
The Alcohol Years: Almost 20 years after leaving it behind Carol Morley - winner of the City Of Melbourne Award for Best Short Documentary at the 2000 Melbourne International Film Festival - returned to Manchester where she had spent several years lost in an alcoholic haze at the centre of the city's burgeoning musical and cultural scene. From booze fuelled nights at the city's legendary Hacienda club to inebriated revelries at New Order's expense 'The Alcohol Years' is a poetic retrieval of that time in which Carol's rediscovered friends and acquaintances recount tales of her drunken and promiscuous behaviour. Carol Morley's search for her lost self and the conflicting memories and viewpoints of those around her weave in and out revealing a poignant portrayal of the city its pop culture the people who lived it and of a young woman who found herself at the centre of a defining moment in Manchester's cultural history. Among those contributing to Carol's story are many of the most notable and significant figures from the era including broadcaster record company executive and entrepreneur Tony Wilson author and DJ Dave Haslam Buzzcocks singer Pete Shelley Vini Reilly of The Durutti Column musician journalist and TV presenter Dick Witts Jesus And Mary Chain bassist Douglas Hart and Nico's former manager Alan Wise. 'The Alcohol Years' features music by New Order The Durutti Column Pete Shelley Vini Reilly ToT Stella Grundy and Fall drummer Spencer Birtwistle. Everyday Something: Based on Carol Morley's collection of newspaper cuttings and narrated by the late John Peel 'Everyday Something' presents private moments that give strange glimpses into everyday life.
After the demise of Joy Division the band's founding members - Bernard Sumner Peter Hook and Step Morris - continued under the name New Order. They were later joined by Gillian Gilbert. Their first single 'Ceremony' was a top 40 hit. 'Blue Monday' released in 1983 remains the biggest selling 12"" record of all time in the UK. In the summer of 1990 they reached the UK Number 1 spot with 'World in Motion'. New Order - 3 16 contains: New York 81 (Originally released as Taras Shevch
Finsbury Park, 9th June 02 is what it says on the cover: an unadorned video record of New Order's outdoor concert in London on that date. As such, it suffers slightly from the same incongruity as any manifestation of New Order live. One tends to picture the creators of such sonic miracles as "Bizarre Love Triangle" and "Regret" wearing star-spangled robes and pointy hats; the prosaic reality of a bunch of blokes wearing jeans and T-shirts is inevitably somewhat disappointing. There are other, more fundamental, problems with this performance. Granted that the sound is better than the sound at open-air concerts usually is ("Love Will Tear Us Apart" is especially tremendous), but whatever ambience may have been generated in the mud on the day has not translated to the small screen; there is an unintentionally poignant moment during the exhumation of Joy Division's "Atmosphere" when one shot over Barney Sumner's shoulder lingers on a distant burger van. Nor does it help that Sumner frequently, and off-puttingly obviously, refers to an autocue at his feet. Given that anyone who has taken a serious interest in British pop over the last 20 years knows all the words to "True Faith" and "Temptation", it is extraordinary that the man who wrote them doesn't. On the DVD: Finsbury Park, 9th June 02 has subtitles in English, French and German. Sound is available in Stereo, DTS 5.1 Surround and Dolby Digital 5.1. Special features include a brief documentary called "New Order 9802", which comprises clips of their 1998 British tour and a few reminiscences from fans, and a three-minute montage of black and white footage of the set-up and sound check at Finsbury Park, titled "Earlier in the Day". There is also a song selector. --Andrew Mueller
