  The second of Francis Ford Coppola's films based on the popular juvenile novels of S.E. Hinton (the first being The Outsiders), Rumble Fish split critics into opposite camps: those who admired the film for its heavily stylised indulgence, and those who hated it for the very same reason. Whatever the response, it's clearly the work of a maverick director who isn't afraid to push the limits of his innovative talent. Filmed almost entirely in black and white with an occasional dash of color for symbolic effect, this tale of alienated youth centers on gang leader Rusty James (Matt Dillon) and his band of punk pals. Rusty's got a girlfriend (Diane Lane), an older brother named Motorcycle Boy (Mickey Rourke), and a drunken father (Dennis Hopper) who've all given up trying to straighten him out. He's best at making trouble, and he pursues that skill with an enthusiastic flair that eventually catches up with him. But it's not the whacked-out story here that matters--it's the uninhibited verve of Coppola's visual approach, which includes everything from time-lapse clouds to the kind of smoky streets and alleyways that could only exist in the movies. The supporting cast includes a host of fresh faces who went on to thriving careers, including Nicolas Cage, Christopher Penn, Vincent Spano, Laurence Fishburne, and musician Tom Waits. --Jeff Shannon

When the men are caught, their parents hire slick criminal defence attorney Jay Kirkpatrick, (Don Johnson Django Unchained) who puts the focus on Teena's credibility, based on her sobriety and promiscuity. Shockingly her assailants are exonerated and released, even though the daughter's testimony should have alone been enough for a certain conviction. In the aftermath of the verdict Dromoor grows increasingly close to the victim and her family, who he then discovers are being taunted and stalked by the freed men. The injustice becomes too much for him to take and fuelled by a sense of vengeance and his own personal demons, Dromoor sets out on a lone campaign to serve the justice the men deserve.

The framing device is an effort by a horribly scarred combat soldier (Nicolas Cage) to break through to his best friend, Birdy (Matthew Modine), hospitalised after seemingly being driven mad by fighting in the Vietnam War. Cage then flashes back to their boyhood, where Birdy, a canary aficionado, was considered the school weirdo but managed to be a solid companion none the less. Directed by Alan Parker, it works best as a coming-of-age story, but misses the bizarre psychological transferences of the book, in which Birdy imagines himself within the world of canaries he creates in his bedroom at his parents' house. Modine is fine as an out-of-it misfit enraptured by his own little universe. --Marshall Fine

In the process, old friends are caught up in shady investments and Geneva becomes the focal point of his fugitive career. Then, as the net closes, the eternally routine nature of Vincent's professional life returns to haunt him anew. Aurélien Récoing is persuasively understated in the lead role, conveying a myriad of emotions with his subtle facial gestures. Karin Viard is sympathetic as the trusting Muriel, ready to offer support even when the web of lies has all but unravelled, and there's an engaging contribution from Serge Livrozet--the adept black marketeer sincere in his willingness to help. Laurent Cantet's direction is a fine example of less is more, sustaining the film with relative ease over 129 minutes. Pierre Milon's camerawork makes the most of some stunning scenery on the Franco-Swiss border and Jocelyn Pook's spare but brooding score is a discreetly effective enhancement. As the closing scene ties up loose ends with a neatly barbed irony, you're left in little doubt that Vincent's problems are about to start again. --Richard Whitehouse
