  This 1997 thriller For Hire ponders the question of what terrible things a person might be persuaded to do, given the right circumstances and the right price. Rob Lowe plays Mitch, a Chicago cab driver trying to make it as an actor, married to the pregnant Faye. Among his clients are bestselling writer Lou Weber (Joe Mantegna), who befriends Mitch and confides in him that a drug dealer is trying to kill him. Over the next few days, Mitch begins to suffer severe stomach pains, collapsing in Weber's apartment after a fare and is diagnosed with inoperable stomach cancer. With only a short time to live, he decides to take up Weber's offer to rub out his drug dealer stalker for $50,000, a nest egg for his family after he's gone. A not entirely unpredictable twist follows, hinted at by the Lucifer-like beard sported by Mantegna and the film alights only briefly to meditate on the potential for evil in all of us before resuming its journey along conventional, though certainly passable Hollywood thriller lines.   This box set contains Jackass: The Movie plus Volumes 2 and 3 of Jackass the TV show. Jackass is very probably the most perfectly named programme in the history of television. The cult MTV hit is the sort of exceedingly stupid thing that can only be the work of clever people; in this case, a collection of old-enough-to-know-better delinquents who appear to have taken the wisdom about the dumbing-down of popular culture as a challenge. The difference between Jackass and most dumb things on television is that other dumb things on television like to pretend that they're arch, or clever, or at the very least camp. Jackass makes no such pretensions, and for this reason it is incredibly liberating and funny. There is no subtext to any of this. Johnny Knoxville and company think of something supremely idiotic to do, and do it. We see them riding down hills on ice blocks, inviting a fire crew to turn their hoses on them, and trying to ride bicycles around a 360-degree wooden loop while dressed as chickens. That only one cast member ends up hospitalised is little short of miraculous, and surely proof that God loves his clowns. --Andrew Mueller

  How do you like your blockbuster movies? If the answer’s loud, fast and full of big robots fighting, then you’re well and truly in luck. For director Michael Bay’s take on Transformers, based on the toys of the same name, delivers just that. And with some style. The film stars the fast-rising Shia LaBeouf (Disturbia) as Sam, who discovers that his first car has a little more to it when it transforms into an Autobot robot called Bumblebee. Fortunately, the Autobots are the good guys, and following not far behind are a good number more, headed up by Optimus Prime. Against them are the less friendly Decepticons, with Megatron at the helm, and the two sides are set for a frenetic battle right in the middle of Planet Earth. There’s a plot sitting underneath all of this, but it’s pretty much given with the Transformers movie that it’s just a vehicle to get the film from one set piece to another. And there’s little denying that the action sequences are spectacular. Boasting quite staggering special effects, the on-screen action moves with a pace and ferocity that sometimes makes it hard just to keep up with it all, as mighty robots engage is some quite staggering fights. It’s quite an achievement. Paving the way for an already-in-production sequel, Transformers has little pretensions about what it’s going to do, and is all the better for it. This is a film about big robots, big fights, big effects and, ultimately, big, dumb grin-inducing fun. What, really, is there not to like? --Jon Foster
