The legendary conductor Vaclav Talich (1883 - 1961) who shaped the Czech Philharmonic over the course of entire decades recorded Dvorak's Slavonic Dances in 1955 at what was then Czechoslovak Television. It was his last work with the orchestra. Vaclav Talich said of his work: 'We conductors are a strange combination of self-confidence and humility when we face the composer whose work we are studying...' Inspired by Talich's life director Martin Suchanek recorded the documentary Conf

lma Mater is an extraordinary and uplifting collaborative musical creation which allows people to hear Pope Benedict XIV as they have never heard him before. Filmed live in performance in Westminster Cathedral, Alma Mater features the voice of the former pontiff reciting and singing in this unique and moving combination of Lauretan litanies, Marian chants and wonderful original pieces by three distinguished contemporary composers. The Pope's words, recorded both in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome and during various pilgrimages, blend with the music performed by two world-famous ensembles: the Vatican's Philharmonic Academy of Rome Choir and Britain's Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. The result is a creation of exceptional beauty that will appeal to music-lovers everywhere. Alma Mater was originally released as an album, and this DVD includes The Making of a Masterpiece', a documentary charting the extraordinary story behind the album's creation.
Sir John Barbirolli (1899-1970) was on of the most important British conductors of the last century. He began his musical career as a cellist playing with various ensembles before forming a chamber orchestra in Chelsea for which he served as conductor. His reputation as a conductor of note was established when he substituted for Sir Thomas Beecham at a London Symphony Orchestra Concert in 1927. He led performances at Covent Garden from 1929-1933 after which he was named conductor of the Scottish Orchestra Glasgow and the Leeds Symphony Orchestra. After a successful U.S. debut with the New York Philharmonic in 1936 Barbirolli was appointed the Philharmonic's principal conductor a position he held until 1943. Then back in England he took charge of the Halle Orchestra of Manchester and dispite other engagements remained that orchestra's conductor-in-chief until 1968 when he retired with the title of Conductor Laureate for life. Barbirolli was knighted in 1949 and made a Companion of Honour in 1969.Among the players in Scottish Orchestra during Barbirolli's tenure was one of the foremost oboists of the century Evelyn Rothwell (b. 1911) whom the conductor married in 1939. Rothwell studied with Leon Goosens at the Royal College of Music in London and went on to play with the London Symphony Orchestra and the Glyndebourne Festival Orchestra in its early years (1934-1939). In 1971 she became a professor of oboe at the Royal Academy of Music in London and in 1984 she was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire.

Recorded in 2000 at the Thomaskirche in Leipzig where the composer worked as Cantor for 25 years, this performance of Bach's Mass in B minor is a commemorative concert marking the 250th anniversary of his birthday. The conductor here, Georg Christoph Biller, was himself Cantor in 2000, while most members of the ensemble have strong links with the Bach tradition. Hence, this is a faithfully authentic, if orthodox rendering of the work. The Mass itself, however--composed in 1748-9, a year or so before he died--is somewhat unorthodox. To begin with it's a Latin mass, itself an odd choice for a protestant Cantor, and even so does not follow the conventions of a Catholic mass, split as it is into four rather than five parts. Using the full range of his compositional skills, it seems that what the ailing Bach intended here was church music that transcended the bounds of creed, a glorious musical valediction that soars aloft into the cathedral rafters and beyond. Certainly, this is the feeling evoked in the performances of English soprano Ruth Holton, among others. The power of the performances is poignantly contrasted with visual extracts of Bach's original score, his enfeebled handwriting indicative of his failing health. Yet the Mass in B minor has succeeded in achieving immortality and universality--a fine last testament from a composer who seems to have more resonance with contemporary audiences than most of his classical descendants. On the DVD: The aspect ratio is 16:9. There are various subtitles but no extra features. --David Stubbs

Recorded during Kurt Masur's tenure as Kapellmeister of the Gewandhaus this recording features Mendelssohn's Symphony No.4 in A major which charts his journey through Florence Rome and Naples and Mussorgsky's 'Pictures at an Exhibition' in which the composer describes 10 paintings by Hartmann framing each by the 'Promenade'.
This "Russian Greatest Hits" journey couples Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6 ("Pathétique"), and the lovely ballets from his greatest opera, Eugene Onegin, with the majestic architecture and overwhelming vistas of the composer's native Russia. The whirlwind tour travels from Moscow's Red Square to St Petersburg's Pushkin Theatre to the Black Sea. Such musical accompaniment to the breathtaking visuals leads to the conclusion that this country, so rich in history and culture, obviously inspired Tchaikovsky's free-flowing melodic genius. The music is gracefully played by the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Antoni Wit. Just one quibble: the disc's "travel notes" (briefly describing places "visited" during each section) would be more helpful if they could be accessed while viewing the programme. --Kevin Filipski
