  The 1988 Carlton mini-movie The One Game is the perfect definition of cult TV. Originally shown as four Saturday night instalments, it was a success with audiences and critics alike at the time and remains an extremely original piece of television. On the surface, the story is as simple: an ex-business partner exacts a very personal revenge. The game being played by Magnus (an almost unrecognisable Patrick Malahide) upon the arrogant Nick (Stephen Dillon) makes the tale far more interesting, however. If the premise sounds a little familiar, that's because the 1997 Michael Douglas movie The Game has striking similarities. The show captured society's interest in games at exactly the right time. First there's the Arthurian context, which visually struck a chord with a decade of Dungeons and Dragons fans. Then there's the constant reference to the new dawn of computer games, which everyone was excited about going into the 90s. But Nick is embroiled in a theory of Reality Gaming that turns everything on its head. He doesn't know who of his friends or colleagues may be in on the game, and since it begins with the sting of a £2 million theft, he's prepared to make sacrifices along the way. Changes in fashion and technology can't detract from what remains a cracking good yarn, well told and well played. On the DVD: The One Game arrives on disc superbly packaged. The attractive box contains an informative booklet relating the show's place in TV history. Unfortunately there's nothing at all in the way of extras on the disc itself--a disappointment, which, like the 4:3 ratio and stereo sound, is only to be expected for an all-but forgotten gem. --Paul Tonks

Jimmy (Thomas) is a highly educated barber with a superiority complex who can't stand Isaac (Garity) the new white barber who just wants a shot at cutting some hair. Ricky is an ex-con with two strikes against him and is desperately trying to stay straight. Terri (Eve) is a hard-edged woman who can't seem to leave her two-timing boyfriend. And lastly there's Dinka a fellow barber who is madly in love with Terri but doesn't get the time of day. Barbershop 2 (Dir.   One interesting thing about Cleopatra 2525 is that it works far better on video or DVD than as a weekly television show, because the action in the tightly packed half-hour episodes is so fast and furious that you can miss crucial developments in the admittedly simple plots just by nipping into the kitchen to put the kettle on. Furthermore, despite appearances, the scripts do allow for character development, but this has to be delivered in snippets rather than dollops. Far better, then, to settle down with a large pizza and watch several episodes back to back. There's no shortage of humour in this camp post-apocalypse shoot-em-up-fest. Cleopatra is a dippy exotic dancer who suffers complications during surgery for a boob job! Placed in cryogenic suspension until such time as medical science can help her, she wakes up in the year 2525 to find a world seemingly dominated by plot ideas stolen from classic sci-fi movies such as The Terminator--humanity has been driven underground in a world ruled by machines, morphing androids are used as spies etc. etc. etc.--where she's "adopted" by a couple of firm-midriffed female resistance fighters who take their orders from a mysterious voice (called Voice). It's all great fun and the action and effects are excellent (especially the airborne robot thingies). --Roger Thomas

  The continuing popularity of horror spoofs has created an opportunity for low-quality slashers such as A Crack In the Floor to pass themselves off as humorous. The story follows axe-wielding psychotic hermit Jeremiah who meets a bunch of fresh-faced young hikers and the movie employs every trick in the genre's book but still fails to rise itself above cheap exploitation (best indicated by the tasteless rape of Jeremiah's mother that prefaces the action). Brazenly claiming to feature Tracy Scoggins and Gary Busey--who in reality appear for about five minutes each--the film features young unknowns, the most high profile being Saved By the Bell's Mario Lopez. Which is fitting really because the film, with its mix of teen enthusiasm, redneck stereotypes and crass violence, is little more than that show meets The Dukes of Hazzard meets Deliverance meets Friday the 13th. Recommended for connoisseurs of everything gory and tacky but no-one else. On the DVD: The DVD manages to keep the quality set so spectacularly by the film itself--featuring an appalling trailer, a reprint of the information on the disc's box, biographies of the handful of established actors who make the briefest of cameos and trailers for some equally naff TV movies.
