  Horatio Hornblower has been serving on the HMS Renown under Captain Sawyer. There is only one problem Sawyer appears to be going mad. His repeated unprovoked punishment of midshipman Wellard is not only unjust but also distracts him from the job in hand and endangers The Renown. Hornblower's ingenuity saves the ship from disaster but both the ship and Hornblower himself are in constant danger from Sawyer's irrational behaviour.
