  Hal Ashby's much-praised Being There stars Peter Sellers in what was perhaps his finest comic performance. Chance the gardener has spent his entire life in an old man's house and has no idea of the world outside except for what television has given him. Sellers manages to make his innocence touching and oddly impressive rather than an offensive exploitation of disability. Jerzy Kozinski's screenplay neither entirely endorses nor discounts the twin possibilities that Chance's simplicity and closeness to the natural world give him access to real wisdom, or that he is simply a blank on whom people project what they want to see and hear. What is clear is that he gives his dying friend Ben (Jack Warden) peace of mind and consoles Ben's wife (Shirley Maclaine). Whether he's being groomed for the Presidency or appearing to walk on water, he always does something right, and the same is true for Sellers' minimalist performance.   The story centers on the veteran movie animal trainer Hank O'Hara his two dogs and a trio of horses. His daughter Mary Kate and her daughter Carly move from Texas to live with him after the death of Mary Kate's husband. Feeling lost and missing her father Carly bonds with the young dog Little Chuck. Behind the scenes Carly helps Hank prepare the dogs and his horses for film work and then watches excerpts from the finished movies a Western a commercial with a police chase and K9 unit a television detective series and a tongue in cheek horror movie. Along the way we meet several veteran actors from film and television. It is a warm family story highlighted by a fantasy sequence with Carly as a world famous animal trainer.

Along the way, there are a few extraordinary scenes, such as when the group cleans out the cash register of a porno video store, leaving the proprietor unharmed but demanding that he remove from his shelves any material depicting interracial sex. This low-key but compelling production gives an insight into how such a strange and very ugly culture can arise out of ignorance and blunted perception.
