Leos Janacek: From The House Of The Dead, performed by various performers and conducted by Pierre Bouelz.
Song cycles--anthologies that tell a story--are perfect for visual treatment, and Oliver Herrmann has chosen two that typify the expressive and the expressionist. Subtitled "A Story of Red and Blue", Dichterliebe places Schumann's songs in a nightclub setting, intercutting them with rehearsal and pre-production sequences that don't shed much light on either the settings or their interpretation. Christine Schäfer captures the lovelorn feel of this music, and Natascha Osterkorn is a sensitive accompanist, but the peer presentation style could well grate on repeated viewing. One Night. One Life, Herrmann's presentation of Schoenberg's Pierrot Lunaire, is likely to prove more durable. Schäfer walks listlessly down corridors and through rooms of Dali-esque paranoia, emerging into the cold facelessness of a modern city, before retreating behind her own persona. The performance, directed by Pierre Boulez, is unfailingly good and this ought to attract new listeners to Schoenberg's light, ironic and ever-relevant cabaret. On the DVD: Dichterliebe and Pierrot Lunaire on disc are presented in a 16:9 picture format that reproduces with needle-sharp clarity, and the PCM stereo sound has the required immediacy and finesse. There are subtitles in four European languages and detailed introductions to both works are provided in the booklet. The lengthy interview with Schäfer is insightful, if not without an element of Blind Date, Fassbinder style! --Richard Whitehouse
Brilliant Orchestral Music by Berg Debussy and Stravinsky.Recorded live at the Philharmonie Koln.
Film 1: Eclat is a real study of resonance written for fifteen instruments Pierre Boulez created in 1965 a glittering jewel of tightness and rationality a riotously colourful mixture of open-form freedom and serialist order. Eclat (meaning to burst out) is a kind of concerto for conductor where the musicians in the ensemble play semi-improvisational material prescribed within boxes in Boulez's score. Given this material the conductor composes and controls the work via an elaborate and complex series of cues directing the content of the music and deciding which musicians play when as well as what they play. In this film by Frank Scheffer Eclat is performed by the Netherlands' Nieuw ensemble conducted by Ed Spanjaard coached by Boulez himself.Film 2: In A Lesson by Pierre Boulez the composer explains with warmth modesty and infectious enthusiasm the hidden architecture of Sur Incises one of his most recent works to a non-specialized young audience. On a number of occasions Pierre Boulez has shown that he can come up with the right words and gestures to throw a light on complex musical scores. Here he demonstrates his teaching talents in talking about his work as a composer and offers a witty exposition of the musical movements that make up its construction. This masterclass documentary is complemented by a concert with Boulez conducting the nine soloists of the Ensemble Intercontemporain who follow him with visible pleasure through the mysteries of this spectacular piece.

The recording took place in the St. Florian Church (Stiftskirche St. Florian) in Linz Austria; it is here that Bruckner is buried where he was organist and where themes of this symphony were first heard in an organ improvisation played by him in 1886Boulez's much discussed interpretation is unique in its clarity of the musical structure without losing the rich expression of the symphony.
The partnership of Boulez Chereau and Peduzzi put Wagner's Ring back where it belonged - at the centre of controversy. By the time it was last seen on the stage of the Festspielhaus in 1980 the production had taken its place as one of the historic achievements of the Bayreuth Festival. Working closely with video director Brian Large Chereau re-rehearsed his staging for the films taped at that time to recreate the experience on screen and to preserve career-defining performances from the original cast headed by Donald McIntyre Gwyneth Jones and Manfred Jung.
