Legendary tenor Pl''cido Domingo stars in the visually stunning opera The First Emperor by Academy Award winning composer Tan Dun (Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon) - Filmed live at the Metropolitan Opera in High-definition. EMI Classics continues its 'Metropolitan Opera : Live in High-Definition DVD series' with the Metropolitan Opera's world-premiere of Tan Dun and Ha Jin's The First Emperor. Commissioned by the MET in the mid-1990s this spectacular new production was one of the most highly anticipated cultural events of the 2006-07 Metropolitan Opera season. The Opera tells of Emperor Qin's quest for a national anthem for his new country and his ill-fated decision to force a rebellious but talented young composer to write it. Tragedy results following the composer's love affair with the emperor's crippled daughter including the deaths of three principal characters. Pl''cido Domingo as Emperor Qin leads an all-star ensemble in this classic story ideally suited to the opera stage. The First Emperor combines the expressive power of traditional ancient Chinese singing with the long musical lines of Italian Opera. This juxtaposition of musical cultures illustrates Tan Dun's musical style and influences perfectly. In his music not only East and West but ancient and modern coexist. One of just six composers to conduct their own works at the Met Tan Dun lead all the performances of the first run of the opera. Revered Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou (Hero Raise the Red Lantern) directs and was instrumental in the opera's creation having worked closely with Tan Dun while he composed the music.

  • Spanish Night [2001]Spanish Night | DVD | (04/02/2002) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £19.99

Plácido Domingo is no stranger to stadium events, though in the old days it was as a singer with his pals, Pavarotti and Carreras. In Spanish Night with baton in hand he has an appealingly avuncular manner, and he couldn't hope for a better class of orchestra than the Berlin Philharmonic, here playing in their annual open-air concert given at the city's Waldbühne. It's a real crowd-pleaser of a programme (and the audience's enthusiasm is immediately apparent and increasingly boisterous as the evening wears on). None of the works stretches the concentration unreasonably, and the views of Spain come not only from home-grown composers (Sarasate, Torroba, Serrano and Vives) but also as viewed through other eyes: Rimsky-Korsakov's Capriccio espagnole, Chabrier's España and Johann Strauss II's Spanish March. A pair of soloists increase the sequin quotient of the evening: the consummately poised violinist Sarah Chang (who has been round for so long it's difficult to believe she's still only 20) and the full-voiced soprano Ana María Martínez, winner of the Plácido Domingo Vocal Competition in Barcelona. Given the visual limitations of such events, the camerawork is imaginative without being distracting, and the sound, if a little boxy, is perfectly acceptable. Above all there's a great sense of fun to the occasion, and in the final number, Lincke's Berliner Lufte, Domingo is unable to resist seizing the microphone and leading the singing. On the DVD Sound options are either Dolby Digital 5.1 or PCM stereo and the picture is formatted for 16:9 TVs. A variety of goodies have been added to the concert itself, including interviews with Domingo and Sarah Chang, footage of flamenco dancing in Berlin (which is vaguely relevant) and a behind-the-scenes documentary.--Harriet Smith

  • Sibelius - Violin Concerto / De Falla - Nights In The Gardens Of SpainSibelius - Violin Concerto / De Falla - Nights In The Gardens Of Spain | DVD | (15/05/2000) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £19.99

Sibelius's solitary concerto is one of the most passionate tests for the violin virtuoso, one to which Maxim Vengerov is more than equal; he captures the work's passion and its occasional quirky patches of the spookily sublime. His performances of the "Sarabande" from the Bach Second Partita, and the "Ballade" from Ysaye's Third Sonata, are admirable encores demonstrating his range and his elegant control. Barenboim's performance of the de Falla Nights is equally virtuoso, bringing out the work's structure as well as its local colour; Domingo's conducting is solid and serviceable. Barenboim ends the concert with three de Falla orchestral showstoppers--the "Farruca" from The Three-Cornered Hat and the "Magic Circle" and "Ritual Fire Dance" from Love the Magician; the Chicago Symphony perform throughout with their usual vigour and fine orchestral colour, but are particularly remarkable in these three encores. On the DVD: The DVD comes with the usual subtitles in standard European languages. --Roz Kaveney

From 1980 the Canadian director Robert Carsen worked for several years at the renowned Glyndebourne Opera Festival, for which he was awarded the Carl Ebert Ward directing. This young talent was then recognised and nurtured by huge for directing. This young talent was then recognised and nurtured by Hugues Gall, who was later to become general manager at the Paris Bastille Opera. Carsen's breakthrough came with his production of Mefistofele, first shown in Ghent in 1988. Among the works which he has tackled with huge success are Bellini's la Straniera and Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor from the bel canto repertoire, as well as modern (classical) works, such as Igor Stravinsky's The Soldier's Tale or The Lighthouse by Peter Maxwell Davies. The main centres of Carsen's work in the 1990's were the festival at Aix-en-Provence and the Flemish Opera, Antwerp, where the director received universal acclaim for his seven-part Puccini cycle. Where Verdi is concerned, Carsen has directed productions in Paris and Cologne of Nabucco, Macbeth, Otello and Falstaff. The New York Metropolitan Opera staged Carsen's guest production of Peter Tchaikovsky's Eugen Onegin, and he produced Die Frau ohne Schatten by Rochard Strauss for the Vienne State Opera. For Cologne Opera at the end of the 2000 season Carsen takkled Wagner's summum opus - a new Ring cycle.

In March 2001 some of the world's greatest lyric voices assembled in the cavernous Teatro Padiglione Palacassa in Parma for a Verdi Gala to commemorate the centenary of the composer's death. The works included in this concert are generally taken from his most famous operas, but there are one or two surprises too: it's not often you get the chance to hear the gorgeous "Dieu nous separe" from the Parisian grand opera Jerusalem (1847), for example, or arias from Il Corsaro (1848). The singing is mostly of a very high standard: Barbara Frittoli uses her glorious voice with intelligence in the excerpt from Il Trovatore, and Daniela Dessi is stunning in "Pace, pace" from La Forza del Destino. Older singers like Carreras and Domingo are also still on superb form, too, and both men manage to sound heavenly while packing a mighty dramatic punch. But there are also some weak links: Mariella Devia is a little too slippy-slidy in her coloratura to be a convincing Violetta, and Leo Nucci simply shouts his way through Il Trovatore. Despite the familiarity of the material, Zubin Mehta conducts with a beguiling freshness of approach and plenty of warmth and wit: the playful phrasing in "La donna e mobile" is simply charming On the DVD: Verdi Gala comes with fine picture quality, but the recording balance favours the singers over the orchestra and leaves some details of the ensemble inaudible. Each number is introduced with a personal comment from the singers, leading to some old ham from Jose Cura and some silly journalese from the others: "And thus La Traviata was born overnight", is one particularly vacuous example. The DVD also includes a slide-show of stills from the rehearsals, and subtitles in English, German, French, Spanish and Italian. --Warwick Thompson
