Directed by acclaimed, multi-award-winning filmmaker Peter Morley, 25 Years is an impressionistic survey of the years from the Queen's accession to the throne in 1952 through to her Silver Jubilee in 1977, featured here as a brand-new High Definition remaster from original film elements in both its original widescreen theatrical and fullscreen as-filmed aspect ratios. Combining archive and contemporary footage - including that of the royal visit to Canada and the US in 1976, the bicentenary year of American independence - the film explores the monarchy through a quarter-century that saw the conquest of Everest, the development of television as a mass medium, the first supersonic flight and mankind's first steps on another world. Through good times and bad, and tumultuous changes for better or for worse, one factor remained constant: the monarchy, in the person of Queen Elizabeth II, provided a continuity and stability which this film celebrates in her Silver Jubilee year. Among the more charming--and improbable--of pre-millennial success stories is the left-field crossover triumph for this Welsh soprano, 12 years old at the time of her debut, and still on the near side of her teens in this concert video. At a time when "teeny pop" reigns over MTV and radio playlists, Church's serene programme of Welsh and Irish folk airs, devotional hymns, and generally tranquil classical melodies gives alternative music an entirely new meaning. Then again, it's just possible that Church's very appeal rests on the delicate balance between the unapologetic sweetness of her music and the unforced girlishness she flashes between songs, rare qualities indeed against the harsher foil of sexualised pop culture. Given the degree to which various predecessors, from Brenda Lee to Tanya Tucker to LeAnn Rimes, have been groomed to transmit a precocious "maturity", Church's virginal typecasting may be methodically anachronistic, but at least it offers a calming refuge from the mixed messages and soft-core spin offered by Britney Spears.Director David Mallet, who has become the DeMille of up-market music videos, applies a familiar balance of sure technical craft and slick sentimentality. He dresses the Brixton Academy concert site with a faux stained glass window, flickering candlelight and delicate laser lighting units that imbue Church with a backlit radiance, just so we won't miss the angel connection. Sceptics will also note her Andrew Lloyd Webber connection (the signature Pie Jesu), as well as canny nods to Celtic chic in the inclusion of such war-horse choices as "Danny Boy" and "My Lagan Love". Still, whether or not the young star achieves her dream of singing Tosca at La Scala, for the moment Church achieves a poised lyricism that is no mean feat. --Sam Sutherland, Amazon.com

The Royal Air Force has a long and distinguished history of display teams stretching back over 80 years to the first Hendon Pageants. This unique DVD traces the history of the post-war RAF jet display teams from the first Vampire formations to the Red Arrows of today. A rarely seen colour film from 1959 'Card Five' captures the Black Arrows aerobatic team in all their glory. It features extensive use of in-cockpit cameras spectacular ground to air material of Black Arrows' Hunters performing some of their most famous routines (including looping 22 Hunters at Farnborough) and goes behind the scenes with the team. After a brief look at 94 Squadron Blue Diamond Hunters and 56 Squadron Firebirds flying Lightnings there is the chance to enjoy superb footage of the Red Pelicans in the early 1960s - again with stunning in-cockpit and air-to-air filming. Squadron Leader Henry Prince recalls the glory days of the Yellowjacks accompanied by rare cockpit cam material from the team and also provides the link to the formation of the Red Arrows in the mid 1960s. Featured here in full the film 'A Team of Seven' provides an unrivalled insight into the first year of the team both in the air and behind the scenes. The DVD then traces the history of the team through its switch to nine aircraft and conversion from the Gnat to the Hawk with glorious air-to air and ground-to air filming of the team in action.

  • The Stepford Wives [1975]The Stepford Wives | DVD | (15/01/2001) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £14.99

Ira Levin's scary novel about forced conformity in a small Connecticut town made for this compelling 1975 thriller. Katharine Ross stars as a city woman who moves with her husband to Stepford and is startled by how perpetually happy many of the local women seem to be. Her search for an answer reveals a plot to replace troublesome real wives with more accommodating fake ones (not unlike the alien takeover in The Invasion of the Body Snatchers). The closer she gets to the truth, the more danger she faces--not to mention the likelihood that the men in town intend to replace her as well. Screenwriter William Goldman (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) and director Bryan Forbes (King Rat) made this a taut, tense semi-classic with a healthy dose of satiric wit. The DVD release presents the film in its original widescreen dimensions. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

  • China Moon [1994]China Moon | DVD | (30/07/2001) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £19.99

China Moon (1991) is a pleasing entertainment that assembles the dependable elements of film noir in the tradition of Body Heat (1981), The Last Seduction (1994) and, of course, the mother of all such films, Double Indemnity (1944). There's a femme fatale (the beautiful and talented Madeleine Stowe) and an honest cop (reliable Ed Harris) who soon becomes smitten. Her husband (Charles Dance) is a brute who beats her, so she murders him and inveigles Harris into helping her dispose of the body. That's when the complications begin, and Harris starts to sweat when his fellow cop keeps asking awkward questions. The acting is uniformly good, with Harris' partner played by Benicio Del Toro (Traffic) offering an excellent performance. Harris and Stowe strike sparks off each other, to the point where you almost believe he is being sucked into her schemes. On the DVD: The disc contains a theatrical trailer and several TV ads, with scroll-down filmographies of the major talents involved which are incomplete for some unknown reason. There's a brief and unenlightening five-minute documentary, with the principal cast plus the director, John Bailey, commenting on the film. Both image and sound are excellent quality, sound in Dolby Digital, picture in anamorphic widescreen ratio of 2.35:1 --Ed Buscombe
