Having cornered the market on his signature brand of inspirational comedy, Tyler Perry makes a bid for action-movie supremacy with this grisly adaptation of author James Patterson's most popular character. Loosely based on the 12th novel in the series (2007's Cross), the plot follows the early days of the title character, a genius police detective/psychologist trying to clean up the mean streets of Detroit while keeping his family out of the line of fire. As he mulls over accepting a job with the FBI, he and his team are forced to match wits with a psychotic contract killer (Matthew Fox), who displays a disturbing commitment towards seeing his job through. Director Rob Cohen (The Fast and the Furious, XXX) knows this turf well, delivering an effective mix of creeping thriller sequences and go-for-broke action scenes. Faced with the unenviable task of following in the footsteps of Morgan Freeman (who played the character in Kiss the Girls and Along Came a Spider), Perry does a credible job in portraying both the tender and vengeful aspects of his character, even if the script often falls into the trap of having other characters exclaiming how brilliant Cross is, rather than letting the viewers see the deductive process for themselves. Based on his first attempt, any future entries in the franchise appear to be in good hands. Ultimately, however, the other elements of Alex Cross pale in comparison to Fox, who goes all out--and then some--in giving the audience someone to hiss at. He's shorn down to what appears to be a negative body-fat ratio, and occasionally literally froths at the mouth--and his dedication to creating a villain for the ages quickly overpowers the material. Once this freaky beanpole starts chewing the scenery, you'll be glad that the filmmakers decided against shooting in 3-D. --Andrew Wright

Sydney Pollack's 1985 multiple-Oscar winner is a sumptuous and emotionally satisfying film about the life of Danish writer Karen Blixen (Meryl Streep), better known as Isak Dinesen, who travels to Kenya to be with her German husband (Klaus Maria Brandauer) but falls for an English adventurer (Robert Redford). The film is slow in developing the relationship, but it is rich in beautiful images of Africa and in the romantic tone surrounding Blixen's gradual discovery of her life and voice. One downside: while we may all love Redford, he is as convincingly British as Kevin Costner is in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. --Tom Keogh

During the idyllic sun-drenched afternoon some of the party left the rest of the group and having climbed higher stopped to rest and fell asleep. They awoke as though still in a dream and silently ventured further through a passage in the imposing rock face. Some of the girls were never seen again. The film that established Peter Weir as a major filmmaker is a critically acclaimed classic of Australian cinema. With BAFTA-winning photography and a memorably haunting score Picnic at Hanging Rock remains one of the most chillingly atmospheric and beautifully enigmatic films ever made.

In a bid to liven up and make more relevant the continued plight of the world's wildlife, S Club Goes Wild is a collection of seven programmes coproduced with the World Wildlife Fund. Each episode features one of the S Clubbers (typically accompanied by a couple others) travelling to the native country of a rare mammal or bird. Spiced up with audio excerpts from the group's hits, approximately half of each programme is dedicated to getting close to the endangered wildlife, whilst the rest is taken by the gang exploring the local surroundings. There are some great, if not terrifying moments in each programme, for example Jon, Tina and Jo trudging through a carpet of cockroaches to watch the collection of bird nests (to be made into the local delicacy of bird's nest soup), Paul milking a goat, Hannah paragliding on to Cococabana beach, and Bradley and Hannah rowing through a lake of alligators in the dark. Perhaps the embarrassment of being forced with his fellow S-Clubber Rachel to perform S Club hits to Kenyan tribes people and Siberian folk performers, was one of the reasons why Paul was the first to quit the band. Although more of each programme could have been dedicated to wildlife issues, they provide a fascinating and accessible insight into the diverse cultures of the world and the valuable work of the WWF. On The DVD: S Club Goes Wild features fact-filled menus before the start of each programme, providing further information on the featured country. There's also a fun, if rather simple interative quiz of the DVDs contents. As well as DVD-Rom links to the WWF and S Club Web site, there's an advanced photo gallery which allow the viewing of exclusive photographs of the band individually, or as part of a continuous slide show. --John Galilee
