  Mae West's reputation for tweaking the noses of film censors was well-established by the time she made I'm No Angel generally considered her most successful picture. The frank-speaking blonde bombshell delivered some of her most classic double entendres in this 1933 film her second consecutive outing opposite the luminous Cary Grant. The two had made She Done Him Wrong earlier that year and in I'm No Angel West does Grant wrong again to hilarious effect. West plays her typical floozy a carnival dancer who escapes a murder charge and cozies her way into high society where she famously tells her maid: ""Beulah peel me a grape."" Eventually she wins Grant then drops him and sues him for breach of contract. Rarely has a more intelligent sexually powerful and dominant female figure been seen on screen and West is at her sizzling comic peak. Already a major entertainment figure West rode the popularity of I'm No Angel to greater notoriety but she never again teamed up with a male superstar so successfully. West's movies were among those most responsible for bringing a new era of censorship after the early 1930s.

  On paper, The Royle Family doesn't sound that promising: a working-class family from Manchester sit in their cluttered living room, watch the telly and argue over domestic details (the arrival of a telephone bill, for instance, provides the big dramatic event of the first episode, which aired in September 1998). But from such small everyday incidents, Royle Family creators Caroline Aherne and Dave Best (who play young couple Denise and Dave) have crafted one of the most successful shows on British television: a comedy about the joys and frustrations of family life that's warm, honest and very, very funny--Britain's answer to The Simpsons, whose success the show rivalled when it started broadcasting on BBC2 (the programme jumped channels to BBC1 for its second series).The Royle Family marked an on-screen reunion for Brookside-actors Ricky Tomlinson (who plays bearded, big-hearted, banjo-playing Jim Royle) and Sue Johnston as his wife Barbara, the driving force behind the Royle household. It is smart casting because The Royle Family is as much a soap opera as a situation comedy. Now in its third series, The Royle Family has seen its characters develop like real folk. Denise and Dave got married and now have a little sprog; Barbara starts menopause (how many sitcoms are brave enough to use that for laughs?) and Denise's kid brother Anthony shakes off his surly adolescence when he turned 18 in series two. Unlike Oasis, who provide the shows theme song "Halfway Round the World", this programme just keeps getting better.But no soap--not even Brookside in its dafter moments--has one-liners as brilliantly crafted as The Royle Family. Slouched in his armchair, Jim's dour running commentary on the TV shows that are on at the time are particularly priceless: Changing Rooms, for instance, boils down to "a Cockney knocking nails into plywood...   Hours of fun for F1 addicts, this official Formula One 2000 World Championship Review has neat interactive menu options that let the viewer switch back and forth between a number of perspectives during each race. First select the race you want to see, then choose either the "Continuous Version" or the "Interactive Version". Continuous play runs potted highlights (five minutes or so) of each race, but the "Interactive Version" is the really interesting bit: this lets you select the view from the on-board cameras or the trackside cameras, watch the reactions in the pit lane, or even see continually updated race data statistics. The stilted commentary hardly matches Murray Walker for excitement, but does a serviceable job pointing out the significant moments in each race. Gimmicks aside, this was a vintage F1 season anyway: from Australia to waterlogged Silverstone to the first American F1 race since 1991 at Indianapolis and beyond, 2000 was the year that Michael Schumacher gave Ferrari the Constructor's Championship for the first time in 20 years, not to mention winning the Driver's title for himself. But Schuey's race to the finish was not without its setbacks: he suffered his share of crashes and breakdowns, as well as inadvertently breaking the leg of one of his pit crew and bursting into tears at a post-race press conference. New British talent emerged with Jensen Button driving in his first season for the Williams team, and this was also the year that McLaren's David Coulthard (who survived a plane crash early in the season) began to outstrip team mate and former World Champion Mika Hakkinen: it was the Scot who turned out to be Schumacher's closest rival. This disc is an absorbing way to replay the highlights of a memorable F1 year. --Mark Walker
