  • Dracula Prince Of Darkness [1966]Dracula Prince Of Darkness | DVD | (29/10/2001) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £15.99

As the third in what became a series of eight, Prince of Darkness was distinguished among the Hammer Dracula movies for several reasons. It was the third and last directed by Terence Fisher and his familiarity with the mythos and studio practices meant the rushed production still came out looking spectacular in places. Moving into the tail end of the 1960s, Hammer looked for ways of cost cutting: the film's dramatic finale on a frozen river takes place on a two-for-one set being used simultaneously for another shoot. This was also the series entry that included a substitute for the Renfield character missing from the first movie. Thorley Walters as Ludwig is a colourful cameo and that's also all that can be said of Christopher Lee. Despite top billing, the mute monster occupies but a fraction of the overall on-screen time. The real frights come from gaunt butler Klove who scares the life (literally) out of hapless travellers Alan, Charles, Helen and Diana. Surely their fate would ensure no-one else took the mountain pass to Carlsbad? But only two years later, audiences discovered Dracula Has Risen from the Grave. On the DVD: apart from scene access there's nothing making use of the DVD format here. The 2.55:1 presentation is certainly welcome, and the mono audio somehow feels appropriate. --Paul Tonks

Human relationships are complicated regardless of whether you're young or old, or looking for love or friendship. When Miley's dad (Billy Ray Cyrus) and Lilly's mum (Heather Locklear) are attracted to one another in "Lilly's Mom Has Got It Goin' On," Miley (Miley Cyrus) and Lilly (Emily Osment) can barely contain their excitement, but an argument over who pays the bill raises the issue of sexism and puts an end to the romance. Jealousy threatens to tear apart the working relationship between Miley and Robbie Ray when The Jonas Brothers ask Robbie to write a song for them and Miley gets worried that her dad will like working with the guys better than working with her. A longstanding family feud between Miley's Mamaw Ruthie (Vicki Lawrence) and her Aunt Dolly (Dolly Parton) ruins the biggest night of Hannah Montana's life when she receives the International Music Award for "Best Female Artist" and the two most important women in her life can't seem to put aside their differences long enough to celebrate Hannah's accomplishment. Finally, professional and personal rivalry causes some serious ugliness between Mikayla (Selena Gomez) and Hannah Montana that affects both girls' reputations and their relationships with Jake. Funny thing is, Miley and Mikayla actually turn out to be pretty good friends. Throughout all four episodes, Jackson (Jason Earles) and Rico (Moises Arias) clash over everything from management style to business amenities, personal hygiene, and how each can best achieve his own notoriety. Bonus features include music videos "One in a Million" and "True Friend," a "Come Feud With Me" segment with Jackson narrating the ten top television feuds, and the Raven episode "Run Raven Run" in which Raven and Alana compete for the attentions of the newly transformed Devon Carter (Lil'J).--Tami Horiuchi

  • Carry On Teacher [1959]Carry On Teacher | DVD | (27/08/2001) from £6.66   |  Saving you £10.33 (155.11%)   |  RRP £16.99

When Carry On Teacher was released in 1959, the series was still in its infancy but all the familiar constituent parts were already in place. Innuendo, naturally, reigns supreme and on the brink of the permissive 1960s it's surprising what Peter Rodgers and the gang were able to get away with. "Are you satisfied with your equipment, Miss Allcock?", child psychologist Leslie Phillips asks gym mistress Joan Sims. Naturally, it isn't five minutes before Miss Allcock's shorts have split, leading to a series of pants gags. And we're off. For Carry On fans, Teacher contains many of the funniest lines and certainly some of the best performances from the whole series. Kenneth Williams is still acting rather than giving his mannerisms a good work out. Hattie Jacques is establishing her gorgon-with-a-soft-centre-for-the-right-man persona and Charles Hawtrey's birdlike twitching makes him ideal as the precious music teacher. A youthful Carol White and Richard O'Sullivan are among the scheming pupils. But you don't have to be a diehard Carry On fan to appreciate the boisterous, sub-St Trinians comedy. And thanks to Ted Ray's poignant acting as the headmaster, there's a real moment of Mr Chips-style bathos at the very end. On the DVD: Carry On Teacher doesn't gain much from being presented in widescreen. Much of its appeal lies in its familiarity. All we ask for is a clear print--and in black and white this is diamond sharp--and decent sound quality. The whole thing fits like a comfortable old shoe. But apart from the scene index there are no extras on the disc. Given the cult status of the Carry On films, and the wealth of documentary material which has been made about them and their stars, you'd think something extra could have been offered with the DVD releases to make them a more worthwhile alternative to the video. --Piers Ford
