  Mozart's immortal adaptation of Beaumarchais' satirical tale has always been a Glyndebourne staple, so it was appropriate that this delightfully traditional production of Le Nozze di Figaro was chosen to reopen a refurbished Gyndebourne in May, 1994. Here, John Gunter's set design is airy and uncluttered, leaving the actors plenty of breathing space, while director Stephen Medcalf likewise allows the characters to speak (and sing) for themselves. Gerald Finley's Figaro and Alison Hagley's Susanna make a charming central pairing; Renee Fleming and Andreas Schmidt are a formidable aristocratic duo, while Marie-Ange Todorovitch fills Cherubino's trousers with pleasing playfulness. Haitink and the London Philharmonic sparkle, as of course they should. Unfussily filmed, this is as close to the real thing as you are likely to get without a Glyndebourne season ticket.On the DVD: This is a double-sided disc requiring a changeover between Acts 2 and 3. With a running-time of 189 minutes, the disc is no longer than some epic Hollywood movies, so such flipping is hard to justify. But at least opera lends itself to natural breaks like this. The sound options are Dolby stereo or 5.1 and the picture is in 4:3 ratio. Subtitles are provided in English, French or German and the booklet contains a plot synopsis. --Mark Walker

  André Previn's first opera, A Streetcar Named Desire, is an intelligent adaptation of Tennessee Williams' play, written to be performed by two very strong principals. Renée Fleming's performance as Blanche Dubois is one of the best things she has done, full of a dangerous bravado and a vulnerability that wins us despite our irritation. The role is one which gives her voice ample opportunity both for extended displays of controlled, passionate singing and for those moments when singing by itself is enough and the voice has to break off in sorrow or madness. Rodney Gilfrey as Stanley Kowalski is equally fine--his voice has the right dangerous energy. In the important subsidiary roles of Stella and Mitch, Elizabeth Futral and Anthony Dean Griffey are also remarkable. Futral in particular gives a total performance in which we forget to make a distinction between her acting and her singing. The opera itself is, as you would expect, one of the most accessible new scores to arrive on the opera stage for some years, drawing heavily on the legacy of jazz and with that nervous musical intensity we associate with the play. Previn conducts the San Francisco Opera Orchestra effectively. A complete CD recording with the same cast is also available.On the DVD: The DVD comes with menus in English, French, German and Spanish and sub-titles in French and German. It is presented in 4:3 ratio and with PCM stereo sound. The booklet gives a moderately interesting account of the opera's genesis. --Roz Kaveney

  From 1980 the Canadian director Robert Carsen worked for several years at the renowned Glyndebourne Opera Festival, for which he was awarded the Carl Ebert Ward directing. This young talent was then recognised and nurtured by huge for directing. This young talent was then recognised and nurtured by Hugues Gall, who was later to become general manager at the Paris Bastille Opera. Carsen's breakthrough came with his production of Mefistofele, first shown in Ghent in 1988. Among the works which he has tackled with huge success are Bellini's la Straniera and Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor from the bel canto repertoire, as well as modern (classical) works, such as Igor Stravinsky's The Soldier's Tale or The Lighthouse by Peter Maxwell Davies. The main centres of Carsen's work in the 1990's were the festival at Aix-en-Provence and the Flemish Opera, Antwerp, where the director received universal acclaim for his seven-part Puccini cycle. Where Verdi is concerned, Carsen has directed productions in Paris and Cologne of Nabucco, Macbeth, Otello and Falstaff. The New York Metropolitan Opera staged Carsen's guest production of Peter Tchaikovsky's Eugen Onegin, and he produced Die Frau ohne Schatten by Rochard Strauss for the Vienne State Opera. For Cologne Opera at the end of the 2000 season Carsen takkled Wagner's summum opus - a new Ring cycle.
