  • The Germans in Normandy - 1st Leibstandarte: Adolf Hitler SS Panzer Division [DVD]The Germans in Normandy - 1st Leibstandarte: Adolf Hitler SS Panzer Division | DVD | (19/07/2012) from £13.71   |  Saving you £3.28 (23.92%)   |  RRP £16.99

Possibly the most famous of Hitler s SS panzer divisions was the Leibstandarte; it bore his name and shared his fanaticism. The Leibstandarte had proved itself to be highly effective in battle and had fought in virtually all of Germany s campaigns since 1939 justifiably earning the label elite . However constantly called back to the front to stem the advance of the Red Army on the Eastern Front the division was much reduced in power through loss of manpower and a paucity of equipment. In the spring of 1944 the Leibstandarte was again refitting in Belgium a process that was still under way when the Allies stormed ashore in Normandy. The effectiveness of Allied deception measures however kept them fixed awaiting the landing of Patton s phantom army in the Pas de Calais area. Consequently it wasn t until the second half of June 44 that the Division began its nightmare march to Normandy harried all the way by fighter bombers. Arriving at the front elements of the division were thrown into the battle piecemeal to prop up the crumbling German Army as Montgomery launched blow after blow on them. The Leibstandarte s first battle was to choke off Operation Epsom fighting the Scots and the West Countrymen of the Wessex Division in the dense hedgerow country of the Odon Valley. But perhaps their greatest achievement was halting the Great British armoured advance Operation Goodwood; a battle that has been characterised as The death ride of the British armoured divisions . As the Allied breakout gained momentum on the US flank Hitler ordered the Mortain Counter Attack against the advice of his Generals and the Leibstandarte marched west to cut the vulnerable American advance. Under cover of mist the battle started well for the Germans and desperate fighting with isolated GIs resulted but as the weather cleared the fighter bombers lashed the panzers who were forced back. The exhausted German Army fought its way back towards Falaise and seeming destruction by the encircling Allies. Forcing their way through the Corridor of Death a much higher proportion of the Leibstandarte escaped and the Division lived to fight another day. Production notes: The elite Leibstandarte is the subject of considerable fascination and study. This film written and presented by established historians and battlefield tour guides will strip away layers of myth and take the viewers to the places where the SS fought the British Americans and Canadians in one of the most costly battles of the Second World War.

Although Idomeneo is one of Mozart's lesser known operas it sparkles with the composer's usual brilliant melodies. Glyndebourne became the main advocate of the opera in the 50s and 60s and yet despite this Idomeneo was still considered by 1974 something of a rarity.During a ferocious storm Idomeneo the King of Crete makes a vow to Neptune offering a sacrifice (the first human being Idomeneo sees) in return for the god's help in bringing his ship safely to shore. As it turns out this is his own son Idamante. This dilemma can only be solved by the unselfish love of Ilia who is willing to give her life in his stead.Richard Lewis once again confirms his position as the world's leading exponent of this opera in the title role of Idomeneo with Josephine Barstow equally mesmerising in her portrayal of Elettra's agony. This significantly shortened version begins with Idomeneo alone on the beach after having survived the fierce storm. John Cox uses strikingly dark staging echoing the drama of the action and according to Mozart's original directions includes drowning sailors and the infamous Act II sea monster.

  • Duel Of Hearts [1990]Duel Of Hearts | DVD | (29/07/2002) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £2.99

A rather jarring mix of period drama, trashy romance and all-star blockbuster, Duel of Hearts is a swashbuckling, bodice-ripping tale of slightly dubious quality. Based on a novel by Barbara Cartland, it provides the usual dollops of intrigue and love, although its choice of a female protagonist does at least give it some twist. The splendidly named Lady Caroline Faye (Alison Doody) is the story's plucky heroine, fighting to prove the innocence of her beau Lord Vane Brecon and discover his troubling inner turmoil. Donning a disguise that seems to consist largely of wearing her hair in a different manner, Lady Caroline places herself among the very people that would seek Brecon's undoing. Those looking for high quality drama should probably go elsewhere, but this is an entertaining enough piece of silliness, combining the history of Regency England with the production values of a daytime American soap opera. On the DVD: Duel of Hearts on DVD has had very little effort put into it, which is perhaps no surprise given the rather slapdash nature of the main feature. The sound has been digitally remastered but the picture quality hasn't, and has that dubious made-for-television look. The interactive menu is unattractive and unimaginative and there are no extras. --Phil Udell

The last film directed by John Cassavetes, Big Trouble reteamed some of the creators of the much funnier The In-laws. But despite another script by Andrew Bergman, and a cast that reunited Alan Arkin and Peter Falk, this comedy doesn't live up to its predecessor. A spoof of Double Indemnity, the film casts Arkin as a nervous insurance agent faced with huge college tuition bills for a trio of sons headed for Yale. To make extra money, he gets involved in a scheme with a woman (Beverly D'Angelo) trying to kill her husband (Falk). That the whole thing turns out to be an adventure in insurance fraud shouldn't come as a surprise. Despite an inconsistent script, the chemistry between Arkin and Falk can still produce the occasional laugh. --Marshall Fine
