  It's clear why Melanie Griffith saw Mark Childress's bestselling book Crazy in Alabama, as the perfect vehicle for herself. The role of Lucille, a beautiful, battered wife in rural Alabama who dreams of glamorous movie stardom, is tailor-made for her. Griffith's husband, Antonio Banderas, has done quite a respectable job guiding her in this, his directorial debut; her performance--compelling, funny, and warm--is her best since Something Wild. (She also looks simply smashing.) Otherwise, the film is a curious amalgam of genres: an antic, surreal Southern Gothic comedy combined with a deadly serious civil-rights parable. As the movie opens, in the summer of 1965, Lucille (Griffith) has just murdered her abusive husband and is blowing town for Hollywood with his head in a Tupperware container. Scenes of her wacky cross-country road trip are interspersed with incidents back in Alabama involving clashes between protesting blacks and murderously intolerant whites. One can't imagine how these two seemingly disparate narrative lines will come together, but they do, in a surprisingly effective manner. The moral of both stories turns out to be: "You can bury freedom, but you can't kill it". Stand-out performances by Robert Wagner, as Lucille's Hollywood agent; Rod Steiger, as a quirky Southern judge; Lucas Black (Sling Blade) as Lucille's highly principled young nephew; and, believe it or not, Meat Loaf, as a brutal, bigoted Southern sheriff give the film an additional boost. --Laura Mirsky

  Taking the well-travelled outlaw hero format of The Saint and reinventing the hero as a Mickey Spillane-like Yank, this tough-edged but trivial detective series stars the brick-like Richard Bradford as McGill as a former CIA man who owns only a gun and a change of clothes (hence the title) and wanders about foreign locales, using two-fisted methods to protect beautiful women or foil dastardly plots. Ron Grainer's title theme is among the best 60s TV tunes, and the intense, serious Bradford makes a refreshing change after so many breezy, unflappable, eyebrow-cocking heroes, but the mix of postcard backdrops, character villains and drama-school totty is much the same as in The Saint, Danger Man, The Persuaders, and their ilk. Volume One includes: "Man from the Dead", in which McGill tracks his supposedly dead CIA ex-boss, with Angela Brown; and "Brainwash" in which McGill is after the traitor who framed him, with Suzan (Dracula, Prince of Darkness) Farmer. --Kim Newman

After an unavoidable accident initiates a global catastrophe on planet K'Tau, Sam forces Jack and the others to decide between technology or primitive faith. Naturally, Daniel is for the latter, and ultimately the show stands tall by leaving its resolution up to the interpretation of the viewer. "The Rite of Passage". Some Stargate guest stars just don't get a break. Cassandra, the poor little girl turned into a human bomb four years ago ("Singularity") is now a teenager experiencing a far more problematic "Rite of Passage" than she deserves. Infected with a secretly dormant retro-virus, she also seems to be seeing a ghostly form no one else can see. And for once, there's an opportunity for Dr Fraiser to do more than jab needles too! "Beast of Burden". An interesting mix of the movie Enemy Mine and the Biblical tale of Daniel and the Lion.
