Stargate SG-1 is the TV spin-off from the 1994 big-screen movie. In the roles of Colonel Jack O'Neill and Dr Daniel Jackson respectively are Richard Dean Anderson and Michael Shanks. They're joined by Captain Samantha Carter (Amanda Tapping) and guilt-stricken former alien baddie Teal'c (Christopher Judge) to form the primary unit SG-1. With a seemingly endless network of Stargates found to exist on planets all across the known universe, their mission is to make first contact with as many friendly races as possible. Episodes on this DVD:"Red Sky". A picturesque location shoot and a questioning of faiths distinguishes this episode. After an unavoidable accident initiates a global catastrophe on planet K'Tau, Sam forces Jack and the others to decide between technology or primitive faith. Naturally, Daniel is for the latter, and ultimately the show stands tall by leaving its resolution up to the interpretation of the viewer. "The Rite of Passage". Some Stargate guest stars just don't get a break. Cassandra, the poor little girl turned into a human bomb four years ago ("Singularity") is now a teenager experiencing a far more problematic "Rite of Passage" than she deserves. Infected with a secretly dormant retro-virus, she also seems to be seeing a ghostly form no one else can see. And for once, there's an opportunity for Dr Fraiser to do more than jab needles too! "Beast of Burden". An interesting mix of the movie Enemy Mine and the Biblical tale of Daniel and the Lion. Here it's Daniel Jackson who had previously befriended the Unas "Beast" Chaka (Dion Johnstone) in "The First Ones". There's an agreeable political stance taken on slave labour and animal captivity too, aided enormously by the star calibre cameo of Larry Drake."The Tomb". Paired up with their on/off adversaries the Russians(!), SG-1 enjoys a spot of Indiana Jonesing around "The Tomb". Throw in a little Alien-style hunt and seek with an unseen predator, and you have a terrific movie mish-mash in which Jack manages an all-time high in sarcastic barbs. --Paul Tonks

The Gift: Annie Wilson (Cate Blanchett) possesses the gift of psychic powers and supports herself and her family by reading the cards to neighbours who want to know what the future may hold. Rescued by the sympathetic but skeptical local police sergeant (Laura Linney) he soon learns that many of the town's residents have been beset by bizarre events including sightings of an eerie moth-like entity similar to the one seen by his late wife. Investigating further and having his own terrifying encounters with the creature he becomes obsessed with the idea that this supernatural being can predict impending calamities and is trying to warn the town of one. Is this a psychic delusion brought on by his grief or can he convince the police sergeant that there's a tragedy that must be averted? His life and potentially other's lives depend on his making the right choices before time runs out.

Monteverdi's L'Incoronazione di Poppea (1642) marks one of the very foundations of opera. Revolving around real historical characters, the Roman emperor Nero, his love for Poppea, the betrayal of the empress Octavia, and death of the philosopher Seneca, Monteverdi pits human love, ambition and intrigue against the fates. The set, a symbolic part-globe, and the costumes drawn from various ages suggest--very much in the way of the surreal film of Shakespeare's Titus (1999)--that the concerns of ancient Rome are timeless. With the emphasis on the text (the music alone does not hold the attention for 150 minutes) conductor Jacobs depends upon an excellent cast to bring the production alive. Patricia Schumann dominates the stage, her Poppea is warm, sensual and likeable, without being entirely trustworthy, an effective counterpart to Richard Croft's Nero. Darla Brooks brings just the right degree of vivacious gullibility to Drusilla, while Curtis Ryam offers eccentric comedy as Arnalta. As Ottone Jeffrey Gall is a man acutely tormented by love. Recorded at the 1993 Schwetzinger Festspiele, there is no sign of an audience, the many close-ups suggesting this performance was specially given for video. On the DVD: There are subtitle options for English, French and German, but no special features. The booklet is well documented but does not contain the libretto. The sound is good PCM stereo while the 4:3 image (not 16:9 as stated on the packaging) is better than video but otherwise unremarkable. --Gary S. Dalkin

I Spit on Your Grave, writer-director Meir Zarchi's controversial story of rape and revenge, has lost none of its ability to shock viewers since it first gained notoriety in 1978. Camille Keaton (grand-niece of Buster Keaton and, later, Zarchi's wife) stars as a young woman who is terrorised and then brutally assaulted by four men while on vacation. After slowly pulling herself together, she methodically tracks down and butchers each of the perpetrators. Zarchi's film has been consistently accused of celebrating violence against women, and while the rape scenes are graphic, they also lack the voyeuristic qualities that earmark other similarly plotted exploitation films. If anything, Zarchi is guilty of awkward scripting; the dialogue is leaden, and Keaton's transformation from victim to avenger is too swift. But to label him a pornographer is wrong, and while the film is challenging--perhaps more than most audiences can bear--its depiction of the psychology of violence is undeniably powerful. --Paul Gaita

The principal with the Improve Your Coarse Fishing series is to do what the magazine does - concentrating on UK pleasure fishing on the kind of waters anyone can fish and techniques that anyone can use with a bit of application. In presenter Kev Green's words: The series is all about helping people catch more fish and bigger fish on venues they can identify with. We are targeting many different species in many differ ways. We cover carp but the series is by no means all about carp fishing. It's about enjoying the pleasure fishing that the UK has to offer and learning things that will improve your own fishing. Fishing for bream (Bluebell Lakes Northamptonshire) tench and perch (River Nene) are covered as Kevin who is editor of Improve Your Coarse Fishing magazine goes fishing with Angling Times' editor Richard Lee. Don't miss Kevin's visit to Docklow Pools in Herefordshire to show the quality of silver fish sport available on the country's commercial fisheries as he puts his pole to good use to for a superb bag of roach. A brilliant episode sees Kevin joining carp man Steve Broad in a head-to-head at a typical commercial carp pool with Steve using Method tactics for big carp and Kevin giving a masterclass in the use of market floats and spods to target carp in numbers. It's not all about stillwaters though with Kevin 'hooking up' with Bob Robberts for some real Mr. Crabtree style fishing stalking chub and barbel on a picture postcard tributary of the River Trent and there's some amazing underwater footage of barbel and chub feeding to enjoy. Also look out for Kevin teaming up with former Wasps rugby player Jonathan Watt at Hartleylands Farm in Kent. Jonathan shows how to fish (paste) on the bottom for carp with Kevin enjoying plenty of action up in the water with a splasher waggler and big pellet waggler. And Kevin's back with the nation's favourite fish when he visits Lemington Lakes in the Cotswold to target big tench in the margins .........and he bags a personal best on the pole for good measure!
